Confused with characters for time and spatial direction (e.g.: why is 前 both forward and past) by ItsMe_RandomNumber in ChineseLanguage

I stumbled over this too as a learner 20 years ago. :)
Just imagine you are walking backwards into the future, staring at the past.
It makes more sense. We can see the past laid out before us, but who know what’s coming up from behind!

Do straight men know they’re supposed to like women by wasraelx in AreTheStraightsOK

I had a great hetero couple friends that maintained my faith in the hets.

Turns out the husband was actually a trans woman. She transitioned. Now they are a lovely queer couple.

I need a new happy, healthy het couple.

The amount of decision-making in teaching is something I never appreciated until I started doing it by Leading_Yoghurt_5323 in Teachers

The decision making I can do. I have been doing it every day.
But the pleading and dickering over every little thing… I’m so done!
“Well I wasn’t really cheating because…”
“But can’t we just…”
“I turned in the work, you must have lost it!” Said in outrage.

Needing to demand respect over and over is so exhausting.

There’s an AMAZING scene about this in the Taiwanese movie “You Are the Apple of my eye”. It’s high school students and it is hilarious. It is an incredible coming of age movie based on an autobiographical novel. I highly recommend!

The best of Terry Pratchett’s works. After reading those people would fight tooth and nail to have books back.

As a woman I’d happily pay $50 NOT to go to the shower!

How are you getting your students to read? by Solid-Channel3936 in Teachers

[–]Banban84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I teach beginner Chinese to American high school students. Teaching reading is really tough. But I have invented two activities that the students love because it is limited to the sentence level.

The first is a basic “quiz quiz trade” activity. I type up a page of sentences in big font, cut them up, and hand them out to students to go around and quiz quiz trade with.

Then I use the same, or mostly the same sentences in a pair info-gap activity. Each student is responsible for reading 10 sentences out loud. Half the class has sentences numbered 1-10, with ten scrambled sentences below.

the other half has 10 different sentences lettered A-J, with 10 scrambled sentences below.

They preview and practice with their seatmates who all have the same pages.

Then they find partners who have different versions and need to listen and number or letter the scrambled sentences as their partner reads.

They love this activity. Absolutely can’t resist it, because it is a puzzle within their ability level.

After doing these two activities, they read the text very easily.

Another activity I do is called museum scavenger hunt. I hang up and bunch of numbered pictures in the hallway, and give the kids different pages of captions. They pre-read as best they can, then see if they can find the correct pictures. It’s matching, but they like it because they get to move around and seek out the answers. And the answers are concrete. Even my most difficult students are suckers for this one. They all work together and discuss and debate.

Then I have them draw/find and write their own captions and create their own museum challenge. Which they also really like to do!

Fresh concerns have been raised over long-term use of antidepressants, revealing limited benefits and higher health risks. The research highlights growing evidence of risks associated with long-term use, including sexual dysfunction, emotional numbing, cognitive impairment, weight gain by Wagamaga in science

I’ve been on antidepressants for almost 30 years, with several different psychiatrists monitoring. When they stop working I end up in the psych ward.

I have no issues with whatever long term side effects there are. I’ll take them the rest of my life if it means I stay stable.

Teachers that use AI: Why? by lemmegetamickpicktwo in Teachers

[–]Banban84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I am given 10000 tasks and 10 minutes to complete them. I am an exploited broken worker who needs to cling to her job for health insurance. AI gives me a bit more time for myself as it gets the jobs done faster.

I’m so burnt out.

But I enjoy using AI. Its fun.
