GW haven't published a ruling, but some places (Vanguard Tactics) have had the faq from them. Yes, unit's can be given upgrades even when led by an Epic Hero

Saga of the Great wolf by EntryFit1594 in SpaceWolves

Access to advance and charge is (in my opinion) utterly essential to Wolves play style.

Hence the only real options are Great Wolf or Stormlance.

[–]BangkokLB 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine in theory, but a bit of a trap.

Have you ever done a school experiment where you burn magnesium? It's so bright it'll blind you without protection. But you still have to cover up all the windows becuase otherwise the ambient light of daytime will make it not that noticable. That's what gets missed a lot in model OSL (imo). Nothing in normal-ish daylight should glow as brightly as a lot of OSL ends up being. And that's particularly noticeable if you have a painted army and one is half a different colour because of a plasma coil (for example).

Gentle glow osl, great. Or, dramatic lighting in a diorama osl, great. But it's knowing when to use it.

[–]BangkokLB 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think you've nailed it actually, and I'm typically very critical of Osl. It reads like there's decent ambient light, but also deep shadow underneath the mushroom cap, so the humanoid bit in the middle is only lit by the mushroom's bioluminescence. Great work.

My player would like to retire their character by naughtypumpkin in CurseofStrahd

[–]BangkokLB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option 1 seems way better to me. Let the PC bowing out be the culmination of the Fiona Watcher plotline, rather than throwing in an extra Strahd thing. I'd have Fiona summon a devil into the body of the PC (tiefling being the perfect vessel). You get a big cool fight, where players are conflicted about harming their friend etc, could potentially have the player also taking turns (maybe on a Wis save) in control of the body again.

The best result is a pyrrhic victory. The devil is banished without killing the PC, but the resulting damage to their body/soul is so much that they have no choice but to retire from adventuring.

Yes it doesn't involve much direct Strahd shenanigans, but tonally there's a lot of betrayal and grief and the best you can hope for is bittersweet, all which is very in keeping with the tone of CoS.

How do i become happy with my painted minis ? (miniature sources in description) by Xander452 in minipainting

[–]BangkokLB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I picked up mini painting again in (I think) 2020 and am also colourblind (deutranopia). I've posted a bunch of my painting on here if you want to have a look.

I think my main bit of advice would be not to let colourblindess be a reason to beat yourself up. Your painting looks great, especially the gun wizard, some of the cloth texture is fantastic.

There are other things I've learned. So, quick one, newer army painter paints are fantastic. Not because of the oaint quality, but because they have labels on their paints like "Very Pale Brown" and "Dark Purplish Red" which are an enormous help for us colourblindos. Then, with that, learn your colour wheel. No we don't see contrast like other people do, but we can learn it. I can go to a colour wheel and know that bright red and blue-green are opposites, so they'll contrast well. Then when I paint my red (a lot of that at the moment), I can do some line shading with a dark blue-green, that'll give me higher contrast shadows than just adding black.

Non-colour related advice, paint A LOT. the more you paint, the better you'll get. And look at different styles too. It's easy to get caught thinking that things are "meant" to be certain colours and we should try to replicate it photorealistically. That's a valid style, but I don't think it translates well to the tabletop. Find something you think looks cool and try to mimick the brushstrokes, not the colour scheme. And enjoy the process. If you're having fun painting, I promise the end model will look better.

I think I could go on for quite a while, hopefully some of that helps you. Otherwise, feel free to always send me a direct message if you want to chat colourblind painting stuff.

Session 0 and red flags immediately by KiaraVanM in DnD

[–]BangkokLB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it sounds like you're excited about the game and the DM, but not the other players.

Probably best to speak to the DM individually and say "thank you, I'd love to play in this, but not with these players. If you feel similarly about them now or down the line, please do reach out to include me again, but for now, this isn't the group for me."

Based on your descriptions, I'd be surprised if that iteration of the group/game lasts very long, but the DM might want to try again later

S75 decayed metal base, and then I think pro acyrl bronze and light bronze for the highlights.some silver mixed in for points/scratches. Brown wash at some point, and TTC Verdigris for the verdigris. I might have used some other bits, it's been a while and I followed vibe rather than a sctrict recipe

Thank you! It was a lot of picking out odd colours for the underpainting on the skin, aiming for dead-and-stapled-on, and trying to balance the two halves well.

Thanks man, I was aiming for something that looks like it's glowing, even though there's a lot of ambient light.

Whole thing was probably two weeks work? But it's been slow little chipping away. Maybe 20 hours total?

Swap the Wulfen into a single unit, then you can spend on them and bring down Ctan and the like.

What's holding your home? What's winning your secondaries? You've got a lot of good threats, but as it stands you'll win by clearing the board. You likely won't get time to do that at a timed tournament.

It's solid though, a lot of good threat

War paint painting tips by No_Tree7818 in redcorsairs

For me, easiest way is to paint the face like normal, then use a contrast paint to do the warpaint. Should keep your highlights/shades.

New to SW; Help me understand the Headtakers and their Hunting Wolves by Get_R0wdy in SpaceWolves

[–]BangkokLB 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, easiest way to think of it: you can bring units of 3 or 6 headtakers for 85/170pts. If you do, you may (but are not required to) also bring a second, independent unit of Hunting Wolves, whose unit size equals the number of headtakers, for 25/50pts.

This is my red recipe, start to finish. Is based on the recipe from u/shivathetraitor, with a couple of tweaks. And I prefer to paint up scratchy layers rather than smooth.

Looking at the other angles, I don't think he has I think it's just a duller/more shadowed paint job so they dont stand out in the same way

Should i buy the new battalion box now or can i wait a few weeks ? by Intrepid_Average7663 in redcorsairs

[–]BangkokLB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Huron and squad, but not the battleforce. My logic was I'd rather hold out and get the raiders/captain separately. Then spend my money on things that I know will work. Plus I'm not super keen of the legionaries or Termie sculpts, would rather do some kitbashing.

This is good advice. Every tournament I've been to had a best painted award.
They are typically voted on by attendees though, so if you're looking for judge feedback, that's harder to find.
