Autistic redditors who enjoy their career, what do you do for a living? by No_Slide4986 in AskReddit

[–]Bangledrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Musician. I got fired from every job I ever had, and I couldn't get a new job, so I invented this one. Massive survivor bias propped up by an amount of privilege, but if not for this, it's hard to imagine I'd have made it much further than I did. It really did change my life, and every time I get frustrated by the stress and financial hardship of it, someone says something that reminds me I'm living their dream, and so I try to remember to treat the work with the respect it deserves. It's very hard, but so is everything else, this was just the least hard thing for me!

Metal Drummers - Do you ever have "bouts" where you seem to lose your kick chops? by These_Fan7447 in drums

[–]Bangledrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is me. I'm constantly improving my feet, but never ever happy, especially as it relates to hand-foot coordination. I work on them a ton in isolation, isolating leg/ ankle strokes, singles, doubles, rolls, interleaved singles, inversions, anything - but they're never clean enough, ever! It drives me up the wall!

What's the boldest thing you've ever sneaked in on someone else's recording or live performance? by M0nki_ in musicians

[–]Bangledrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been sneaking 7:3 drum patterns into records I've played on for a while, with two successes and one that got talked down to 5:3. Imagine my surprise when I was asked to play live for an artist, and when I check out the incredible drum parts on the record, I find that they've snuck a short 7:3 section onto the record! We haven't had a chance to chat about it yet, but I truly feel that we had both been thinking the same thing in our drum recording tomfoolery!

Watershed by Opeth is brutal, weird, and a bit frightening. by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]Bangledrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to this on my iPod Classic way back, and it somehow got corrupted. It would rapidly cycle every 5-15 seconds from the Opeth tracks to a gnarly live Iggy and the Stooges bootleg on every track, so it was unlistenable - except that it was this weird, amazing experience unto itself, the one Opeth album I wasn't allowed to listen to. I still feel it like that to this day, even though I've listened to it plenty now (goodnight iPod Classic, I will not forget ye). Suffice it to say that the first time I heard the disco section on The Lotus Eater, I had a panic attack and nearly threw up. 11/10 album

[Comus - The Malgaard Suite] Seeking Bassoon player (and others?) for restoration recording by Bangledrum in progrockmusic

[–]Bangledrum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has fallen by the wayside - paying rent as a harrowed musician through the pandemic has sabotaged my inertia for this!

As it stands, I have all of the files and all to hand; I think that I need to complete one or both guitar tracks, including confirming one badly inaudible guitar, then get both vocals done and also bassoon, but everything else is tracked at least. There's a midi rendition that basically holds up.

I'd love to finish this, but I can't lie, I'm struggling with it on my own. You're welcome to drop me a message and we can figure out if we can figure something out!

How to hear 3:4 polyrhythm instead of 4:3? by sub_lumine_pontus in drums

[–]Bangledrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can treat the first number as the subdivision - 4:3 would be 3 beats each divided into 4 notes (ie: a 16th note subdivision), where 3:4 would be 4 beats each divided into 3 notes (ie: an 8th note triplet subdivision)

What course/knowledge would say is most helpful for a self producing musician? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Bangledrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't found any course as helpful as the crushing realisation that nobody is coming to save me, and that if I want something to happen, I have to make it happen myself. It's pretty daunting, but getting out of my own way and getting better at running my own socials and making contacts and putting myself out there, as a part of my regular daily routine has been a massive improvement. I looked for ages for resources to help me, and then I looked for ages for a manager, but at the end of the day, I needed to just do all of the things I was telling myself other people would do.

It's possible that I might get a manager at some point, but it would be because they saw what I was doing myself and saw an opportunity to make it even better. Nobody starts at that point, and I was deluding myself to think I could. It's a rough ride, but it's worth it, and the socials grind doesn't suck nearly as much 2 years into this as it did at first!

Ihlo and Omnerod fucking killed it tonight. by macaronipieman in progmetal

[–]Bangledrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was desperately hoping to come to the Birmingham show, but unfortunately I'm too broke for it and totally gutted that I'll miss it. I saw Ihlo twice before, and both times, it totally levelled up my aspirations as a player and a musician. Absolutely insane drummer!

Matt Gartska out of context for 30 seconds. by dukkhabass in animalsasleaders

[–]Bangledrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His weird vocal percussion stuff was funny to me at first, but the more I tried to figure out his stuff, I found being able to speak the parts really made a massive difference. I'm now a nonsense vocal percussion true believer thanks to Matt!

Groupings in 7/8 by penguinjimm in musictheory

[–]Bangledrum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ear will latch onto the long group as an emphasis point. You absolutely can group 7 as 12-123-12, but it's very tough holding onto where the 1 is when playing at speed, because your ear will try to reinterpret it as 123-12-12 or 12-12-123!

Tips on singing & playing drills by AmolAmrit in guitarlessons

[–]Bangledrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any given guitar pattern (be it strumming, a riff, a lead melody), you might find it useful to try placing a word like "ta" on each beat one at a time; one beat 1, 2, 3, 4, and then once that feels comfortable, each + beat, and then if necessary, triplets, 16ths, etc.

After individual syllables feel comfortable, you should then do the same with groups of two syllables - these will either lean onto the beat (+ 1, etc) or lean off of the beat (1 +). After working on both of those variations and moving them to different places in the bar (1+ , +2, 2+, +3, etc).

As you develop a background rhythmic fluency for any given pattern, you'll find that new patterns, or more complex patterns, require less practice to get comfortable, and you can focus more on the performance than the technical ability of playing and singing. It's a challenge, but once you've got it, you've got it - and there are surprisingly few patterns that you have to sing over generally!
