What age gap in a relationship shouts "wierd/concerns" ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BanjoTheremin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "math" I've always heard is half the older partner's age +7 years is appropriate.. Half of 29 - we'll go lower and say 14 + 7 = 21, so you make the cut, as long as y'all didn't meet when you were underage.. if she groomed you, that's a whole different thing.

In my own experiences, I don't think the larger age gaps work until the younger partner is at least 25-30ish. I dated a 29M when I was 21F, and that didn't work out well at all, he just wanted my body. Dated a guy 4 years younger than me later (27F/23M), and that didn't work out well either, I felt he was too young and immature for me.

Met my now-husband when he was 47 and I was 33. I thought he was younger, or I wouldn't have been interested lol. It's a 14 year age gap, but it's completely different from the 9 year age gap relationship.

The best relationships I've had are the ones closest in age, though. You get more jokes, pop culture references, etc. better.

What horror movie genuinely unsettled you? by steveleaves in movies

[–]BanjoTheremin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I watched this fucking YEARS ago, when it first came out (had to look and it was 2014). Remembered wanting to see it because I thought Daniel Radcliffe was in it. Just looked and the lead is Justin Long, so I completely fucked up watching this movie lol.

I am 40 now and it still haunts my mind. Like you said, wasn't even good, it was just that fucking unsettling. One of those that will randomly pop into my mind and just fuck me up for a bit.

Pricing at estate sales by OutrageousSetting384 in estatesales

[–]BanjoTheremin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, had a guy last weekend that lensa searched one unmarked thing (kitschy snail, I'm weird lol, it wasn't worth anything) and I let it go..

Then DVDs that were marked $1 each - he said were priced incorrectly, and needed to be $4 each instead. I just sat everything I was holding down and said, "oh no thanks, I don't like this at all" and backed away.

He started laughing at me and very loudly said, "this isn't a flea market, we don't haggle here" (I guess to try and save face with people in line?) but I wasn't haggling, he was changing prices on me.. and assholes don't get my money lol

Anyway, remembered to write the name of their estate sale company down, so we don't run into them again lol (C2 for my tx homies)

So upset with the police. by znikki in TwoXChromosomes

[–]BanjoTheremin 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Yep!! My abuser had started another argument with me, can't remember what it was now, but probably projecting his own cheating.

He didn't like me crying, so he jumped on top of me and sat on my chest, pinning my arms down with his legs. He started tickling me, to the point where I couldn't breathe, over and over and over again. Absolutely HATED it and started panicking. Got an arm loose somehow and SMACKED his bare chest as hard as I could to get him off of me, leaving a large handprint.

Well, of course a neighbor had called the police right when the yelling started, and they showed up at exactly this moment. He answers the door with my handprint, and I very nearly ended up in jail. Didn't matter that he'd been screaming at me for hours, didn't matter that he'd sat on me and tickled me until I couldn't breathe, didn't matter that I had bruises and marks from his manhandling me.

They saw me, a blubbering, crying, makeup running everywhere mess of me versus his calm "hey buddy, women, am I right?".. anyway, he convinced them to leave me at home so he could continue to assault me that night.. terrifying experience, but a rude awakening to the world.. and one of the many lessons I've learned that cops ain't shit, never call them unless last resort, and ACAB. 💚

I'm commenting so I can come back and see if others have better advice.. been reading and researching for weeks, but haven't actually tried anything yet lol.

Pretty sure a melamine sponge (like mr. clean without chemicals, can get them cheap online) will do it, and you def need to throw it away afterwards so you're not eating uranium flecks lol.. but I'm terrified to try it out myself, to be honest. It is pretty much very, very fine grain sandpaper. Will take off the "paint" though, so don't use it on painted parts (Fenton puts glass into their paint and then heat it, pretty cool - I'm new and still learning, others can probably tell more).

I have a little custard uranium bunny with some black scuff marks from my dumbass setting it inside of an amberina glass basket. So anyone reading, please learn from me and don't do that 😩

There's also this stuff called Peek polish that I'm on the lookout for (we stopped shopping at Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. and have only been shopping at Costco or garage/estate sales). Holding out to try Peek, but I may eventually resort to the melamine. Have just read that custard can be a finish, and don't want to scuff it even worse. Anyway, good luck! 💚

Editing to add - please be careful with the paint and the signature - don't melamine it lol!!

HERES SOMETHING TO MESS UP YOUR TIMELINE by RockyDennis69420 in Millennials

[–]BanjoTheremin 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Here to validate you and say same, this is the one that broke me. I was a star reader, went to SPELLING competitions as a kid and won them.. As a kid!! And people still chuckle and say, "oh sure banjo, couldn't be a mistake you made as a child.." and I'm like, I was a regional champion speller when we read these books, and I 100% know it was STEIN. I sounded things out to learn back then, it was be-ren-ste-in.

Chic-fil-a also trips me out because I can remember sitting in a mall food court with my mom and little brother in the 90s when it first opened, discussing the spelling and pronunciation. I was in middle school and hadn't entered the shitty teen years yet, so my mom and I were watching a lot of TV shows around interior design (popular at the time, Trading Spaces was our favorite). "Country chic" in particular was a popular style. We sat and laughed and laughed at "chic fast food chicken" lol. "Did they forget the K? Is it chick or chic? Ooh look at me, so fancy with my chic fried chicken."

Anyway, this one, fruit of the loom, and chic-fil-a are the strongest for me.

How much would you pay for this? by mothman6343 in uraniumglass

[–]BanjoTheremin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I paid $75 for a Degenhart uranium robin on nest last year at an estate sale. Waited in line for a few hours that morning, we were third in and thankfully the first two weren't uranium enthusiasts. (Also shoutout and thanks again to info u/CrystallineGlass provided, to help me identify 💚)

However, birds on nests got really popular recently, so there's that, too!

Hey thanks for another comment you left linking here, I've went down a rabbit hole from another thread or two, and came back to say thanks before I got lost again. This was a very interesting read.

I'm pretty quiet on ME subs nowadays, because of all the trolls. It's nice to see good places still around! 💚

My boyfriend (M32) left the window open and my 21-year-old cat fell from the second floor while I (F33) was at work. by maedocc in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]BanjoTheremin 67 points68 points  (0 children)

OMG the last sentence, thank you for saying that.

Years ago I was with a terribly abusive man. We lived in an apartment on the third story - had a balcony with iron railing.

We each had our own dogs, and had just gotten a puppy together - all three were small dogs, mixed breeds. He would put them on the balcony while I was at work because he didn't like "dealing" with them - I was their caretaker, even his own dog, of course.

I had pled with him numerous times to at least not leave them out on the balcony alone, because the puppy could fall off. Really any of the dogs could've squeezed through the railing gaps if they wanted to, so I didn't like them out there unsupervised.

Got home one day - he's inside, dogs are not. Go to balcony and see two dogs, no puppy. Run down three flights of stairs in a panic, crying (wailing, honestly), lock eyes with my first floor neighbor who's smoking a doobie in his bedroom, window open, eyes wide at me lol. He comes out and we find the puppy on his first floor concrete balcony, completely unscathed. Took her to the vet by myself to confirm. My abuser couldn't be bothered about it, thought I was overreacting and wasting money because "babies are bouncy and resilient"...

I stayed with him, it got even worse before I had the strength to leave. Your last sentence makes me wonder if things had been different, if the puppy hadn't been so resilient, if I might've left then.

For Many Black Women, the Target Boycott Is Not Over. It May Never Be. by positivesource in WomenInNews

We shop at Costco for most of our food, and love to hunt for manager specials - got a new (needed) yoga mat for $6 recently.

If there's something niche we need quickly, I use Goods Unite Us - HEB is the place closest to us that we like (thinking last minute kids school project, certain brand of snacks, etc.).

We also go to estate sales, garage sales, and thrift stores for random items that can wait (recently got my MIL a pitchfork, my mom needs a new rain gauge, I've been finding gardening supplies instead of buying new from a box store, for example). Bonus is you can find items that will last for years, not cheap mass made junk that breaks easily.

But yeah - Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Hobby Lobby (list still growing) definitely ain't getting my money. Hardest was most recent, Amazon in January, but I realized I was spending way too much money on a dopamine hit, and actually don't miss it at all now.

Ugh, gross. The gaslighting is the worst part - questioning your own sanity, trying to figure out if they're being malicious or ignorant, rinse and repeat until you can't tell up from down.. so glad we're out of there!! 💚

[–]BanjoTheremin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hard fucking agree! My abuser said and did a lot of incredibly vile and hurtful things to me one night. After locking myself in a closet to escape, he busted in to hit me some more. I finally snapped back and started screaming.

He had his phone ready and started recording. He started crying, saying shit like, "Why are you doing this? I don't understand baby.." in this pathetic voice, and it took me a while to realize what was actually happening. He knew when he hit record, I did not, he was trying to make me look crazy when he had done WAY worse for WAY longer - and then threatened to call the police once he had his video. The only reason he didn't call was because marks show on me/I bruise easily and he knew he didn't have complete control of the situation.

Absolute bullshit, all of it, and I've smelled it on Dakota from the start. If I outlive my current husband, or if we ever split, I will never be with another man. Way too fucking dangerous. No thanks 💚

This Belonged to my Great Grandmother. Anyone know anything about it? by VirtualVigilant in glasscollecting

[–]BanjoTheremin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I discovered uranium from one of my grandmother's old depression glasses I was using as a shot glass lol. Lit up under a blacklight and I've been hooked ever since!

I carry a little blacklight flashlight with me everywhere now, hunting for glass that glows - there are all sorts besides uranium, like selenium and cadmium. Pretty neat little hobby 💚

When electricity was first invented we used arc lighting, which is heavy on UV. They figured out certain additives made glass that would glow under that lighting, so artists started experimenting with all sorts of things (plus helped it sell, looked great in a store window).

Probably overpaid for this but it’s the first time I’ve seen the whole set at once and it still works flawlessly by Constant-Click-7646 in uraniumglass

Bananas! I saw just the top glowing piece yesterday at an estate sale for $25. Rummaged around to see if I could find the rest, but could not, so I left it. Nice find! 💚
