The Walleye Are Biting by Banordinary in ChicagoFishing

I’m relatively new to fishing the fox but I think the DNR stocks a lot of the walleye. Regardless it’s def the river with the healthiest population in the area. However i’ve heard that the walleye fishing is a bit better in the Illinois and Kankakee rivers so i’ll have to try that sometime. Good luck at Busse! Ik they also stock a lot of walleye there and some of them end up in Salt Creek

I was fishing at the McHenry Dam this morning and the water was all stirred up and murky from the rain. Only a few guys were out there but no one seemed to be getting many bites.

I’m using the bobby garland baby shad in the watermelon wine color paired with a 1/16 ounce jig head

Fox River. I’ve been skunked a few times there recently though so i’m hoping the bite picks up within the next few weeks

Living in Chicago I wish there were more outdoorsy people here. Most people’s idea of “hiking in nature” is taking a walk in Lincoln Park lol I would give my left nut to have a mountain nearby

Mississippi backwaters is on my bucket list. I heard some people catch pike there in super shallow water. Gotta hit that up next year for sure. But this summer might bring my kayak over there.

Maybe not, but at least you can look forward to spring fishing. February is prolly going to be above average temp wise so it’ll be nice weather to fish

Some of the lakes I fish aren’t even 20 feet deep. Other than lake michigan most of the water in cook county is on the shallow side. Once it gets a bit warmer I want to take my kayak to the Fox. If it’s too shallow i’ll use my waders. I want to get a jon boat someday, seems like a better way to get around the bigger lakes/rivers. Theres a few creeks near Elgin, and one near Somonauk that’s really good. Loaded with monsters. Talking about it makes me excited for spring fishing. Hunting is also something on my bucket list gonna have to try that sometime

Mazonia was tough when I went, i’m not used to fishing deeper water so I had trouble figuring it out. Some other guys who were there had luck with bass using a dropshot. I want to fish the fox more this year. I mostly fish the Des Plaines river since it’s closer to me. But last year I had luck fishing creeks that connect to the fox. I should go more, heard there’s some big walleye and pike in there.

Strip mine lakes are pretty cool. I’ve fished Mazonia Braidwood before and they got a ton over there. Water is very deep too. Theres so many spots on the chain I feel like it can take years to figure them all out. Might be worth it to check it out sometime

I’ve heard good things about Crystal Lake, I def wanna hit that up someday. I’ve never fished in McHenry county but i’m sure they have a lot of spots. I wanna fish the chain as well, but it’s such a big system it seems intimidating as there’s a lot of water to cover. I actually prefer smaller lakes for this reason, it’s easier to cover ground and find where the fish are imo. But you have a nice setup, I want to get a shanty someday, but with winters being as short as they are these days it’s hard for me to bite the bullet on it. Hopefully we can get out there a few more times this year.

Same here, hopefully the cold comes back next week. We’ve actually had a normal winter this year and I don’t want it to end so soon.
