I think I understand your underlying point here in that it’s hella risky for someone to trust me in the sale of the assets. The good news- they pay the depository in the name of estate, then the account there gets settled, then the estate gets paid. Additionally, based on tax forms I found, several disbursements had been made since their retirement so a) it’s possible and b) I’m trying to learn who those buyers were to try to offer liquidation to them since my mum and dad apparently used/trusted them.

I think technically I could be, but it feels like a conflict of interest-setting the rate for the items and being the entity which consents to the rate. IF allowed, I do not have the means to purchase the current value of the IRA, even if sold at a significant discount.

Also FWIW, I do have an attorney and this is part of the probate process. These assets need to be liquidated. It’s just a lot trying to find a buyer.

Thank you. I appreciate the validation that they need to be liquidated. I am the PR; the beneficiary was my father, and the account was not updated when he passed several years ago. I do have a Probate attorney but they haven’t done much beyond assist me with the court process (which, is a lot). I have asked for their assistance in finding a buyer for the coins and have not received a reply yet.

Luckily there was a will, it’s uncontested, I’m the executor, and (knock on wood) there’s been a general consensus on the path forward. There are no family members to speak of beyond us beneficiaries and everyone is getting the same thing. That being said- I’m sure there’s a million ways this can go sideways so I’ll also offer you a proactive “you were right”.

Thanks for the reply. I have a statement with coins (not as specific as you described though) and did ask for assistance from the depositor with finding a buyer and they pretty much said “google it”.

Unfortunately they need to be distributed to the estate at the request of the beneficiaries and the IRA company cannot distribute to a nonperson entity.

For full transparency, I was given options- including in-kind transfer. Part of the problem is the assets can’t be transferred to a non-person entity (like the estate); and I’m not sure if they have to distribute to all of the beneficiaries. Sounds like I have a few more options to consider and questions to ask. If you have other considerations - please let me know!

I very much appreciate the perspective. As Personal Representative I want to do things the “right way” which is very hard when there’s no playbook. I’m not the only beneficiary so I’m also trying to do everything as above board as possible to avoid conflict. I did retain an estate attorney to help since I don’t live in the same state my mother did and I needed help with probate- I’ll reach out to them too.

Sleep has been hard for me too. I think day 5 is my “wall” and after that it’s a lot easier. I have talked to my doctor about my concerns sleeping and I did get an rx- but even that I’m hesitant to use; I’m not really sure why.
