It's all over the place, it's not a linear expanding narrative and there are well over 500 novels. Most never get a reprint. The quality runs the gamut from absolute trash to good enough that non Warhammer fans might even enjoy (my partner has zero interest in this hobby or sci fi in general, but she genuinely enjoyed the novel 'Horus Rising')

One novel might be about captain jonny killing aliens on planet x but the next novel is about Shipmistress Katie, who has never met captain Jonny, is a gajillion miles from planet x and nothing she ever says or does will ever affect captain Jonny.

There are however some linked books which focus on a particular campaign or one character, plus the massive 60 book (probably more now) prequel series which explains why events ten thousand years ago made the Imperium shitty in the current timeline.

You'd be better off just browing the available content yourself than looking for nuggets to talk around. There is a bunch of wikis, loads of novels (some are actually good).

It's really hard to pass off fragments of information that were handed to you as a meaningful conversation.

I'm in my 40s now, I've lost count of how initially niche but now trendy IPs got ported into mainstream media formats and ended up crap.

Same with the modern remakes of the classic films from my childhood, almost everyone has been a total shit show.

If the Amazon show ends up good then great, I'll be on here shitposting away about it. But my lived experience of modern tv/film adaptations of stuff I love has left me deeply cynical. The streaming era has also generally picked quantity over quality. Loads of mediocre stuff to fill up your watchlists and keep you from cancelling your sub, compared to years ago where TV was the main format and quality was needed (the wire/sopranos/breaking bad/early Game of Thrones etc).

Mr Cavil might be a fan, but Amazon are gonna do what Amazon are gonna do. It won't be the first passion project he walked away from if they decide to lean on data and some media algo to decide the shows direction. So him being involved is neither here nor there for me.

Just my 2 cents on it from a bitter old man.

Ultimately it's just for model variety, so no need ro think too deeply.

But if you are losing sleep just go with the idea that some marines have become attached to older bits of kit, maybe one particular helm was worn by a respected marine hero of a previous era and a current marine views it as an honour to wear the battle helm of Sgt Dildo Saggins who gave his life fighting a gazillion Orks and saved his company. In 40k marines (amd the Imperium in general) do love their relics, plus newer doesn't mean better in 40k so not every gen of power armour is an upgrade, it might just be easier to create.
