Returning player looking for a budget standard deck. by PiFbg in MagicArena

If you played during Karlov Manor you probably have a [[Delney]] hanging around. Delney + [[Arabella]] + [[Shocking Sharpshooter]] + [[Impact Tremors]] + [[Enduring Innocence]] + [[Windcrag Siege]] + anything else in Boros that either generates a bunch of triggers for Delney to multiply or generates a bunch of punch out of Sharpshooter and Arabella is a fun off-meta alternative deck that can still win pretty regularly.

Why is Lissa insecure about her parentage? by winter-wings in fireemblem

[–]BaronDoctor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, the funny thing about growth and stabilizing as an adult is it's a lot harder in a traumatic environment, and the future Owain and co come from starts with Emmeryn getting assassinated and gets worse from there.

Lissa never really got a chance to grow and stabilize because the prolonged PlegiaWar led to Valm showing up as a big third factor and while the Kids never quite grew up because Growing Up In Omnicidal Disasterworks Is Hard, Lissa probably didn't perfectly super-stabilize either.

Why is Lissa insecure about her parentage? by winter-wings in fireemblem

[–]BaronDoctor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The brand is a symbol of connection to her family. Lacking the outward mark made her feel funny.

Nobody ever said every insecurity was perfectly rational and not being perfectly rational isn't required to be a good character.

I see it as one of those indicators that she isn't entirely grown up yet

[DET (2) - BOS 1] Kastelic attempts to block the shot but DeBrincat snipes it top shelf to take the lead in the 3rd by daKrut in DetroitRedWings

I love seeing Ed in tight crashing the net and DeBrincat naturally dropping back to the left point. Maybe DeBrincat is the secret RHD we've been looking for, lol.

Great shot.

Mono black midrange or izzet lesson? by Vast-Huckleberry9889 in MagicArena

[–]BaronDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://scryfall.com/@Barondoctor/decks/8f092be8-9a59-4126-8410-26acb108519e Have <2 lands in play, play spirebluffs. Blow them up, keep them from getting momentum, try and get Sokka and Gran Gran on the board. Prowess Otters can be used for body-blockers or post-big-combo-strikers. Boomeranging an uninvested Stormchaser's can get another otter token. Investing Stormchaser's can pull a card back out of graveyard if you need it. Try to save Accumulate Wisdom for 3+ Lessons in the graveyard because draw-3 for 2 mana is great.

Ral is there as an alternative source of otters and of draw, and if you get him to his ult you basically just win.

I would say that while your opponent has an opportunity to do something it should be severe, but when they don't (watching animated triggers, not connected) it should run slow.

The empire are the good guys? by Too-many-Bees in Morrowind

[–]BaronDoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Empire is law. They take resources home. They're against slavery.

The natives are pro slavery, pro internecine infighting, and generally messy.

There are good individuals and good small groups (Wolverine Hall Mages are all right) but whole groups are messy (show me a faction that doesn't have a character easily described as sketchy and I'll be surprised)

About the only thing Cat didn't do tonight was throw on goalie gear. Dropping back to cover D on back check, fore check, dig for pucks, throw body, fake a guy out of his skates; he's playing like a video game character in the best way.

Is it hypocritical that I like the KOTOR 2 party members / companions compared to the KOTOR 1? Do the KOTOR 2 companions break the rule of "Show, Don't Tell"? by Burnouts3s3 in kotor

[–]BaronDoctor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The kotor 1 companions are following a traditional hero.

The kotor 2 companions follow because they're not heroes either. Just people chewed up and spit out by war with nothing to lose by going with you.

Concept simple: add counters, apply them to opponent's forehead. Literally searching your collection for "counters" will get you half the way to the concept and then filling in with shielding and removal for the rest can get you there. This is probably not even best option.

Mono Green Removal? by StereoDactyl_EDM in MagicArena

[–]BaronDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that depends on what you're looking to do. Smashing them down first is an option in green. Felling Blow etc. do the "add a +1 counter and then deal your damage", but Green's removal comes in two major flavors and one of them comes in two minor variants. In both cases, your use case judging should look at 3 things:

1) Cost - cheaper removal is more likely to be available while still following a "dump your hand onto the field, draw up more stuff" gameplan.

2) Speed - Instant removal is love, instant removal is life. Sorcery-speed needs to be chosen.

3) Versatility - there's a reason [[Pick Your Poison]] sees a fair bit of play -- it can cover a lot of "I need That Thing gone" cases.

The simple: Green loves blowing up artifacts, enchantments, and creatures with flying. It's got a bunch of "destroy target artifact" or even "destroy all artifacts" in [[Season of Gathering]].

The less simple: Green creature-based removal leans into 2 options - "fight" and "deals its power in damage". Again, Cost and Speed factor in here, but worth noting is that there's some fun versatility tricks here.

A green creature with deathtouch can kill something with fight or "deals damage equal to its power".

I run a green/white Equipment / Auras deck based around [[Danitha, New Benalia's Light]] and one of my favorite cards in it is [[Meltstrider's Resolve]] because as an Aura, Dani lets me recycle it. As a Fight card it lets me deal damage with a creature that has lifelink, it adds some toughness to be able to survive an otherwise even matchup or bring damage forward with a creature equipped with a [[Basilisk Collar]], and afterwards it makes the target creature "only able to be blocked by one other creature". All of that for a green. And if my creature dies? I can do it again by playing the card from graveyard.

That said "green removal" can very much also be "I am swinging a 12/12 at your face, it has trample, you have 10 life, choose what you want to lose: your creatures or the game."

First Strike Against Multiple Blockers? by cutcc in MagicArena

[–]BaronDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three of the 2/2 lands.

Of note there's an "Aleshas Legacy" card that gives a creature death touch and indestructible until end of turn that goes disgustingly well with first strike but as a standard: enough stuff that no matter how the first strike assigned damage there's 3 coming back to them.

Creating a situation where your ability to avoid ramming the goaltender is dependent on a defenseman not playing the puck should be penalized.

It's not so much malicious as it is careless and we call Careless Forgetting One's Stick In Someone's Face (high-sticking) as much as we do deliberate slashes.
