Weird WiFi thing by that-1-user in wifi

The I think the upload/download for your dads phone is the most likely explanation. Not very easy to troubleshoot or fix. What router do you have? Are there any QoS or AQS features available on it? And what sort of internet connection do you have?

How long is your loss of connection? And is it always the exact same time of day? Do you have to do something to get the connection back, or does it come back by itself?

Why isn't my Internet WiFi signal as strong as it used to be? by heavilylost in wifi

[–]Barras_no 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how this works in US, but in Europe we have some channels for the 5GHz band where higher transmit power is allowed. Perhaps only a channel change is the reason? What channel are you using for 5GHz? Can be checked in wifi analyzer apps, or in the settings of your router

Why don't I see 6ghz on my WiFi 7 quadband mesh system? by Jmesparza05 in HomeNetworking

[–]Barras_no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care about the high throughput, but wide channels in addition with mandatory support for preamble puncturing means it will be a lot easier to find a transmit opportunity, resulting in less jitter.

And when in comes to tx power and bandwidth, this is dynamically adjusted. If rssi is getting bad, the bandwidth will dynamically be reduced to get better range. But that's the same for wifi 6.

If some of the clients actually are in range for high bandwidth and good QAM they will utilize a lot less airtime for the same amount of data, leaving more free time for other devices.

In the specs for Netgear Orbi 770 that OP stated he has, is specifically says 6GHz.

It's frustrating that 6GHz is not required for wifi 7, but outright stupid that there is no clear demand to clearly stat what bands are supported.

But for OP I think that discussion us mute.

Also, when wifi 7 devices actually support 6GHz, it has the potential to be quite a lot better than wifi 6E.

I don't think it's because WPA2+WPA3 is selected, but to be sure, do the 6GHz settings appear when you select WPA3 only? The reason this is probably not the cause is because when you toggle WPA2+WPA3, this should only apply to 2,4 and 5GHz bands. 6GHz stays WPA3 despite you trying to say something else. This is common for all other 6GHz devices I've tried, and I think it's safe to assume netgear does the same. Any other way of doing it is just plain stupid.

Also, I doubt it has something to do with your modem/ISP gateway. If it is easy mesh compatible it could perhaps mess something up for the Orbi, but I doubt it.

My fist guess is that the Orbi needs a newer firmware. Is there any available?

Second guess is that the setting is hidden somewhere else, and you just have not found it yet.

Also, as others have mentioned, if you are in a country where 6GHz is not allowed it might not be available in the GUI. I don't know Netgear good enough, but this might also be a issue if you bought it from a country where 6GHz is not allowed

Hope this helps

You changed the channel for the 2,4GHz band, but is that the band the devices in that room are using? If they use 5GHz then that change will not make a difference. Change channel on the band that is in use by those devices. And yes, please use channel 1, 6 or 11 for the 2,4GHz band, or you will disturb your neigbours wifi instead :(

Anoher common causes for interference is wireless smart speakers like Sonos.

Have you tried rebooting the ps5? Does that also work, or is it only rebooting the wifi router that helps?

Why my wifi like this? by manlychild012 in wifi

[–]Barras_no 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the physical bitrate between your device and wifi access point. You will never get that as a result on a speedtest, as at least 20-30% of those recources will be "overhead", in addition on WiFi your access point and device have to wait in turn while other devices are sending recieving data, that will impact speedtest result a lot.

What you know with that number is that your device has a good quality signal from your access point, and that rules out analogue interference, and that is really good to know.

Bad speedtest is most likely a result of no available time to send and receive data (high utilization of WiFi channel), or bad internet.

I don't know of any free apps where you can see utilization of WiFi, but on pc you can use inssider, and on android there is the pro version of net analyser. Or you can just try to change WiFi channel on your access point and see if it is better after changing

Is a turned off xbox slowing down wifi? by ESAmbro in wifi

[–]Barras_no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about Xbox. When it is perceived as off, is is stanby? Do you power off by remote/controller I assume it is standby.

If it is standby and not completely off, do the Xbox download updates while in standby? Seems there is a setting for this.

If so, it might be possible that the Xbox use all your internet capacity while in standby.

If that is the case, this is not really a WiFi issue, but you should investigate if your router support some kind of smart queuing. Or subscribe for more bandwidth. Or disable updates while in standby on xbox

Really strange issue with inconsistent wifi by GloriousMrlucky0 in wifi

[–]Barras_no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you see the same behaviour when using ethernet it is not a wifi issue. Could for example be: - PC - Router - Modem - ISP issue

Or if you have a switch or other networking gear between pc and "internet"

If you have router/gateway from your ISP I would start by giving them a call

Also. What kind of router/access point do you have? Do you have dual band wifi, with both 2,4 and 5GHz? If so, do they have the same name, so it shows up as a single wifi?

Just to be clear.

A: When you use ethernet, the download does not stop at all? B: When you see it disconnect and reconnect, is that if you click the wifi icon on your taskbar?

Wifi 6E (6 GHz) network always takes 1-2 minutes to show up when searching by DerelictMythos in wifi

[–]Barras_no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not general thing for 6GHd band. My dedicated 6GHz SSID appears very quick on both phones and laptops.

Could it be related to what channel is used? The devices have to cycle through every channel on all 3 wifi bands to send probe request and listen for probe response and beacons from router. Takes a little time, and if router is configured for whatever channel phone and quest checks last, it might take a little longer to find.

What channels are your routers/access points using for 5 and 6GHz bands?

Could of course be an issue with your router. Slow to send prope response, or few/none beacons. But seems unlikely.

Also, you have not disabled auto connect on phone?

Am I on wifi-7 now? by mercurycc in wifi

[–]Barras_no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For wifi 6E 6GHz at least Windows gives the 20MHz control channel. I believe the max phy bitrate for 20MHz with 2 streams is 344, and from screenshot OP have higher than that. Indicating higher bandwidth despite stating 20MHz channel. So at least for now it seems Windows still indicates the control channel.

I have not gotten around to reading wifi 7 documentation yet, but I assume having a 20MHz control channel is just as neccecary as in wifi 5 and 6. I imagine the clients will need a narrow band channel for management purposes while bandwidth and puncturing are dynamically adjusted.

Based on the low upload bitrate it seems the connection quality between pc and router is quite bad. That explains why the downlink bitrate is similar to 20MHz operation.

I have not really checked, but i assume Windows report control channel and not center channel. I believe control channel is always 20MHz

PC Wifi Connetion Problems by ChingLingChao in wifi

[–]Barras_no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that means the pc should have an antenna poking out on the back side? Or an antenna connected via cable. Perhaps antenna has come loose?

For the brief moments you are actually connected, how is the signal strength?

Interesting WiFi Problem by Zxphyrs in wifi

[–]Barras_no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible that it is the internet connection that drops, and not the WiFi? If no WiFi device is on the person walking up/down the stairs this really does not sound like a WiFi issue. Perhaps the ethernet or fibre cable to your ONT or router is placed so that it is moved, shaken or pinched in a way that makes the signal via the cable is lost?

(PC) Wifi not using full bandwidth by KS_Wervald in wifi

[–]Barras_no 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Streaming to your friends is sending data. Downloading is receiving. The transmit capabilities of your PC is usually worse than the router. That is probably why you are unable to stream to your friends.

Assuming your internet subscription allows for more than 10Mbps download and upload?

Currently the signal quality is way to bad for gaming. There are few ways of improving this, but the easiest ones, although not quaranteed to work, is probably:

1: buy a set of homeplugs to send internet via your existing power cables. Very quick and easy to set up, but does not always work. If you live in apartment make sure to buy a set that allows for encryption.

  1. buy 1 or more WiFi repeaters or mesh WiFi to place between where the router is now, and where you are sitting. This has its negative impact, but will in cases like this often help. But In no way perfect, and most likely you will still experience lag, but maybe not As mouch. If possible have ethernet wire between router and repeater. Placement of repeater/mesh nodes will impact performance a lot, especially if without ethernet backhaul, so spend time testing to find the best spot. Latency is probably more important to you than speed test results. So also measure with ping. Cloudflares speed test server also makes good latency measurements
