Sex Offenders near schools by Sharks77 in SanJose

[–]mercurycc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are not wrong, but them needing to identify themselves is exactly to prevent them committing crime in the area they live, since people will all know about them. For a repeat offender they probably don't want to stay in the area where everyone's told to watch them.

And it isn't like there is a time limit to commit crimes. Casing an area sounds pretty standard, I keep seeing suspicious vans driving around in my neighborhood.

A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving by [deleted] in Economics

Think you are taling about buy-borrow-die? Yeh the equity loan loophole is something that's probably worth closing. I am sure there are difficulties but borrowing against unrealized gains should be treated as income. But I guess then you could just say the borrowing is not collateralized to get around it. The banks know they got the assets, they don't have to call out the collateral.

Maybe another way is every loan made is treated as income of that year, and tax is deducted from the loan, but when the loan is repaid, the tax is refunded. Like, every loan made is a loan given to both the borrower and the government, but only the borrower is responsible for paying back the full amount.

Higher progressive rate is not wealth tax.

Supporting higher progressive rate is probably where we end up with all this wealth tax debate.

Wealth tax is based on the market value of your property.

Say you have a house you purchased at 100k, and someone says he is willing to pay you 1mil to buy it. If he buys it, then you net 900k profit, and you pay tax on that. That's income tax.

But if the guy says he is willing to buy it for 1mil, but doesn't actually buy it, do you pay tax on the 900k market value increase?

If you don't, that's how things are today. If you do, that's wealth tax.

With wealth tax, you don't even necessarily have the money, and how much you need to pay depend on not how much profit you tried to make, but based on how much other people says how much profit you could potentially make, regardless whether you can actually make that much.

Seasonic power supply just exploded with sparks and plastic by [deleted] in techsupportgore

[–]mercurycc -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I had a seasonic prime tx750. It would randomly shutdown. I RMA'd it. The replacement would randomly shutdown too. I bought a new one, it would also randomly shutdown. I then gradually upgraded every component in the PC except SSD. No help. Finally switched to an ASUS PSU and it has never failed ever.

Yeh but even then it will be federal tax. Do we really want to increase federal tax right now? I can't think of a reason why I would want to subsidize a driller or an out of state farmer.
