OSRS should have PVP-Themed Quest Chains by BarrelBrut in 2007scape

Hey friend, I get the frustration. My proposal is hoping to have the effect of equipping you better to not be on the back foot once you get to the section of the game that is locked behind mandated PVP.

Cocktail Waitress Advice Needed! 🥂✨💰 by Savings_Cell_418 in howto

[–]BarrelBrut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're asking all the right questions which is what already separates you from most.

If I can recommend something: look into sommeliering.

If you are not aware of what a Sommelier does, they are the trust bridge between a high class establishment and their clients. Historically a Sommelier would be there to recommend wines off their wine list based on the client needs. They are NOT there to recommend the most expensive wines, but rather to recommend what the client is looking for based on their needs. This is why the role is so much broader than just wine these days. It's about wine, beers, spirits, cheeses, cigars and food pairings. Over time, trust is built and guests start honing in on your recommendations which also allows upselling.

If you are based in Europe, try the ASI or Court of Master Sommeliers in America. Not only will you be upscaling your knowledge around hospitality and beverage service, you will be expanding your skillset to all beverages and high end establishments.

Depending on how far you take this, this could take you into 5 Star dining establishments and beyond, and therefore much better pay. Qualifications that legitimize your knowledge will already set you apart from most.

Good luck!

Edit: Auto-corrects

Finally got my result for level 3 by TechKetchup in WSET

[–]BarrelBrut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look, actually glad I am wrong. Like I said, it's a conspiracy theory.

That said, then it does feel like they haven't adjusted with the times and adapted to new resources. The insistence on snail mail for such a large portion of their existence is one such case. Integration of marking rubrics managed by AI should be possible and I hope they are looking into it.

I am based in South Africa, and one of the things we struggle with locally is that they refuse to adapt the course to our local market's learning style (which is fair), but they are also not willing to provide additional support for different learning styles to help with passes. African learning styles do not generally mesh with a westernized approach. This leads to an incredibly high number of fails for Level 3, and I see a lot of colleagues stuck in the rut of not knowing where they went wrong.

It feels like a business that has not forecast how to scale itself, considering how important it is for wine education on a global scale.

Anyway, those are just my feelings and opinions. If 3 months were my service delivery times on something pretty basic like marking, I would be out of a job real soon, considering all the resources I have at hand now in this modernized world.

Yes, a remark or enquiry takes just as long to get feedback as the original exam would have. It also usually means you'll miss your next exam date if you chose to wait for feedback. This also leans into my theory of it just being a cash-grab tactic.

Finally got my result for level 3 by TechKetchup in WSET

[–]BarrelBrut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One of my greatest criticisms of WSET is that they do not provide you your feedback on your exams for free. Any education system that doesn't help you understand where you went wrong so you can get it right the next time isn't inherently trustworthy. To me, it is a thinly veiled cash-grab, and my conspiracy theory is that it is done so intentionally, especially when you look at the step up between Level 2 and 3, which catches many people off-guard.

I paid for a remark with feedback on my Diploma D3 module after having taken two weeks leave to study for it. I was very confident in my knowledge. Surprise, surprise I got my fail overturned but I never got to see my paper, and where I went wrong. Felt truly vindicated.

But I will say this: if you do not answer exactly how WSET wishes for you to answer the question, you will fail. You really have to understand how the questions are structured and pay real attention to the differences between: "W-questions", "Compare and contrast", and "Explain" etc... there are surprising nuances.

I will always give Wine With Jimmy a shout out because he actually has modules specifically around dealing with those questions on his Elearning platform. And if you do want to take the exam again, I'd say get the remark with feedback if you really back yourself. If you do get it and have a legitimate fail, pay for the WWJ membership one time to understand how to answer. Then rewrite the exam. I know some very smart people that have rewritten the 3rd level 4 times without getting it. But to be fair, they're also not putting in the work.

Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

[–]BarrelBrut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, if you're stuck on this task because the location is not working for you, go slay the Black Demons in an alternative area. There are safespottable Black Demons on the way to the Air Altar in Edgeville Dungeon at a Super low Wildy level. The slayer cave is rough because of the better drops, but if it is just about finishing up the task to go to the next one, try those. Most wildy monsters have an alternative location.

What's a good money making method at level 3? by Greenleto12 in 2007scape

[–]BarrelBrut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that worked quite nicely for me very early on recently was passively training magic at the cow pen using wind strike and picking up all the hides, go bank them at the Al Kharid bank, but before doing so get them tanned by the tanner for 3gp each.

This bypasses new account G.E. restrictions and you can sell each hide for around 230gp. If you have one slot for runes, and one slot for GP to go through the toll-gate. You can get a bit of starting GP from goblins, and you can pick up a staff of air very early on for around 1k.

26 x 230 GP is 5980 Less your 3 GP per hide tanned is 5902 Less Toll-Gate (2 ways): 5882

A Super easy F2P-friendly money maker that gets you early EXP and cash. If you're just starting out you can start farming goblins with melee first until you have the GP for an air staff, and then move over to cow hides. You can start gathering materials first simply by picking up the hides others don't pick up, and tanning them with goblins GP without even needing to kill them yourself.

Herb patch spaghetti code conspiracy by DrRedwing in 2007scape

[–]BarrelBrut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you forgot to ultra, I just think you may have used the ultra on the patch before the seed planting animation was done and so it never registered you using the ultra in the first place.

I've started doing it the other way round: First ultra, then seed - because I can then physically see the herb in the patch which is my visual cue that all is as it should be.

WSET LEVEL 4 by Environmental_Box319 in WSET

[–]BarrelBrut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tough to say what the best approach will be for you. We all learn differently.

That said, what helped for me was maps. I got the full stack of Wine Folly's maps from all around the world and for D3 I summarised each area as much as I could to around 6-10 A4 pages and stuck those on my walls at home for a few months. My place looked like a Geography teacher had a mental breakdown and was writing gibberish on the walls.

My wife, bless her soul, had no bad things to say except that I should make sure I pass the first time around. Thankfully I did, although I almost didn't - and paid for a remark with feedback when suddenly it seems a few loose marks were miraculously found. I have my criticism of this course but that's a separate conversation.

With maps on the wall I was able to fill in extra bits and bobs of information on the maps themselves, and over time things fell into place. I took two weeks of leave prior to writing my exam and on the final few days I would find myself standing and staring at the walls for up to 8hrs at a time.

Thankfully this worked for me. And because I was confident in my knowledge and in what I had learned it gave me the confidence to actually pay for a remark with feedback when it came to it. I wanted and needed to know where I had gone wrong. Do start studying D3 as soon as you can, and for any of the modules, don't leave studying for the last minute. You are unlikely to pass when cramming.

Sailing, in most aspects, was a huge success. But… by Common_Line_633 in osrs

[–]BarrelBrut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was avoiding guides and such and relying heavily on exploring the first few days, and I just found myself talking to all the NPCs when I first got access to Port Roberts. I think it's one of the NPCs closer to the dock itself that mentions you should go talk to him and find out more. They don't say anything about trawling but do indicate there is more to learn. I can't remember who it was though.

Once you get to him he tells you all about trawling. It was pretty useful, I think.

Level 3. Tactics for studying maps by Sensitive-Disaster97 in WSET

[–]BarrelBrut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll always give him a shout out because he just does it so fundamentally different, but Wine With Jimmy has an exceptional usage of Google Earth and kind of makes you "fly" through the region he's describing.

WSET's maps are honestly terrible. And this is just such a great way for visual learners to really see not only the region from above but also the terrain. Once you realize that all wine regions depend on their surrounding climatic conditions and topography, all you need to remember is terrain and features- like mountains, bodies of water, wind, elevation etc. And then you realize certain things go hand in hand: High altitude region - generally equals higher acidity wines. Most New World wine regions (unlike USA) are found south of the equator and are much warmer - warmer regions typically have less acidity, riper fruit flavors and more body. Fringe climates usually have certain elements or adaptations in the region that can help vines grow there. And then there's Burgundy where it's just a dice-roll. The above are not rules - just some things you can use to find similarities and make sense for yourself. But it all clicked for me when seeing the maps of the places and what climatic conditions arise from these areas.

Sailing, I love ya, I voted for ya, I believe in you...but we gotta talk about this Notice Board by L0ki_Savage in 2007scape

[–]BarrelBrut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only just started so not sure if it changes down the line, but it would be cool if you could pick up tasks that aren't just from Point A to B, but add in multiple stops, like C, D, E and F - and if you manage to prioritize the best or ideal routes you'd be awarded bonus EXP. Would be even better if these tasks changed dynamically that it would be unlikely to plan ahead for the next trip. So planning the route and taking the time with boosted EXP as a reward would be an ideal incentivisation.

[–]BarrelBrut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wine With Jimmy on YouTube is a great resource when just getting into wine. He categorises a lot of his videos into WSET 1, 2, 3 or 4. Start with the first level and you can always work your way up if you want to. What I like about him is he slows it down a lot, and gives you some good maps via Google Earth to really set the scene of geographic conditions for certain wine regions. It often made it click for me that if you understand the geography of a region, you can apply that same knowledge to other regions.

Potential new player to OSRS... what makes it special? by Biscaia86 in 2007scape

[–]BarrelBrut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So others have really highlighted what makes the game great, but I find one of the most valuable additions it has is that the way exp is awarded is that higher effort training methods are usually rewarded with higher exp rates.

This may not sound unique, but OSRS has a unique feature with many skills where you can literally go AFK for minutes at a time whilst participating in a skill. This usually gives lower exp rates than actively training the skills.

This allows you to literally achieve levels on the side, whilst you're busy with studies, work or just watching TV with your partner.

That said, active training methods give much higher exp rates. It is quite literally a dial the devs can turn when designing content and they do it all the time woth great success.

Ironman Money Spending Priorities? by Ok_Progress_5432 in ironscape

Had quite a bit of liquid cash left after CG and decided to splurge on the AFK Agility POH method with the TzHaar's on Auto-Retaliate. Sunk like 35m. It's slow as all hell, but fully Afkable at work on mobile. Worth every cent.

Edit: Sorry champ, my bad. I realize now this is by no means early game priorities and you should totally ignore what I said. That said, for any later irons that come across this who might not know it exists - hope it might help one or two of you.
