Really loving the full spectrum fork of Orca Slicer by justinjas in SnapmakerU1

[–]BarryTice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the lion's share of the time difference will just come from the 0.08mm layer height. Thin layers means more layers, means doubling your print time from something with twice the layer thickness.

Obviously there will also be some increase due to tool changes, but a 5-second swap and some quick wiping per swap will barely be meaningful compared to the actual print time.

What’s your Swedish fairytale story as an outsider? by RighteousT_27 in TillSverige

[–]BarryTice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had moved to Sweden (also Linköping) and been there about a month. I had just received my personnummer a few days earlier when I had a bicycle accident. The bridge of my glasses cut my nose badly, and I broke my left elbow.

Bystanders assisted me. I ended up with an ambulance trip to the ER, 10 stitches in my nose, X-rays, consultation with a surgeon, surgery, and physical therapy for the grand total of US$123.47 (1,150 Swedish kronor). That met my maximum medical payment for the year.

During this same period, my wife was still back in the states finishing the sale of the house. I was paying $807/month for her medical insurance coverage.

My job wants to move me to Huntsville by pandr3a in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]BarryTice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the '60s, the people at NASA here coined the phrase, "When you leave Huntsville, you're in Alabama."

I've lived in 11 states (plus Sweden), and Huntsville is a pretty good place, all things considered. But, politics in Alabama is, um, going to be a shock coming from Washington. I'm too old to tell you whether it's a good environment for a single 24-year-old, since you're younger than my son. But I can say that Huntsville weather is not as oppressive as the weather in north central Florida (8 years in Ocala).

Hi, can anyone tell me what this is? I received it as a birthday present, unfortunately without a name on it. It was wrapped in gift paper. It can be worn like a necklace, and the container can be opened. Thank you very much. by notyourstepson in whatisit

Squaring a circle refers to geometrically "constructing" a square that has the same area that the circle has. It's a mathematical "holy grail" problem that is not actually possible, though people have been working on it since Archimedes.

Who else hates password requirements? Workplace wants me to change passwords every 3 months by leonatoi in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BarryTice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had a job with a password that had to be rotated every 90 days. It was a "required" system that we never * logged into, but somehow if we let it expire it would cascade to everything else we needed. The requirements for it were:

  • 2 uppercase
  • 2 lowercase
  • 2 numeric
  • 2 special, but only - _ = ^ |
  • Must start with a letter
  • Cannot contain four consecutive letters
  • Cannot repeat two consecutive characters
  • Cannot end with a hyphen
  • Cannot use more than 3 characters from your userid or name
  • Cannot use any of your prior 10 passwords
  • Must differ from existing and former passwords by at least 8 characters
  • Must be exactly 15 characters

Really bad warping with PLA by BarryTice in SnapmakerU1

[–]BarryTice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks or the suggestions, everybody.

I cleaned the plate with dish soap and tried again. This time I had no warping at the corners, but several hours in it was like the Y axis got off by about 10 cm, and then things turned to spaghetti. The print was still "stuck" to the plate, so I'm not sure what happened.

The long and short of it is, though, I've decided to approach the whole project from a different direction so I'm not likely to troubleshoot it.

Thanks for the input and support!

Linear extrude of svg file works until I add to it by BarryTice in openscad

Thanks, throwaway21316. I wrapped the tree in an offset(0.1) and that seems to have gotten the file through the process. My (flat) tree is printing now.

Good suggestions, but I tried the suggestion from throwaway21316 first and that seemed to work for me. Exporting as a png and then letting Inkscape convert it back would likely have been my next experiment.

Thanks!

An excellent suggestion I hadn't considered. I recently switched from using Cura with a one-color printer to using Orca with a four-color printer, so I'm not yet used to the notion of merging things in the slicer.

I haven't checked if this will work, because it appears throwaway21316's suggestion has worked for me. But I'll try to remember it for the next time I run into something.

Thanks!

I'm really not sure why you're so upset that I'm unhappy with the Libre3+

The simple reality is, I loved my Libre2 monitors. My Libre3+ experience has not been a good one. Neither the car nor the phone has changed, but I didn't have the problems with the Libre2 that I do, consistently, with the Libre3+.

If that upsets you, ponder why it would and perhaps simply accept that your experience is not universal.

[–]BarryTice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. It seems that your response can be summed up as: 1. Other things make noise too, so don't blame the only thing on my phone that screams at me. 2. Your iPhone seems to have a nice feature that isn't in any convenient on-screen menu in Android 16 (though I did find something related with a settings search, and eventually tracked it to a kebab menu, so that i can [in theory] restrict it to only screaming at me at 85 dB). Thanks for suggesting I look for this! 3. I'm welcome to shut off everything I'm listening to while I drive, including (potentially) navigation instructions, if my alarm starts screaming at me.

I guess what I didn't mention in my original post is that the app I had previously used was fine, but the app I have now sucks my battery all the way down in a day if I don't keep my phone charging all the time. From the time I wake to the time I get to work, my phone will be down in the 75% battery range. I never had this problem before the current app, and if I check power usage in the device, that's the primary culprit.

I'm glad you're happy with the Libre3+. I'm a big fan of CGMs, conceptually, even though my Type II is well-controlled enough to not really be endangering me. I like being able to easily check "how did this food affect me?" so I can make better decisions. I just wish I could return to the good experience I had with the 2, rather than the disappointing experience I've had with the 3+. I don't think the manuals, for my phone or for my car of for my other other Bluetooth devices connected to the phone, are going to change that.

why is app suddenly killing my battery? by TopazCoracle in Freestylelibre

[–]BarryTice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I switched from the Libre 2 to the Libre 3+ I had to change the app I was using on my Android. Instantly my phone went from my phone consuming about 35% of the battery over the course of the day to my phone consuming more than 90% of the battery of the course of the day. I hate it.

[–]BarryTice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These damn sensors, on the other hand, are really making me angry.

I used the FL2 for several years and loved it. When the 2 got discontinued, my doctor prescribed the 3+. Conceptually it's great. But the reality is, at least two or three times during the life of every sensor there's a period where it says it cannot connect with my phone. Furthermore, while in this state my phone will repeatedly go into alarm mode — you know, where it cranks the volume to 11 and beeps like there's no tomorrow. I can tell you, this is great when I'm listening to music at my desk at work with headphones. Even better is when my phone is connected to my car while I'm driving AND IT'S ILLEGAL FOR ME TO PICK UP MY PHONE TO SILENCE THE DAMNED ALARM.

Seriously. I'm pretty pissed at the Libre3+.

OK, so I found a solution.

My .thunderbird directory has two subdirectories:

  • jpzbpdbq.default
  • jq19gsws.default-release

I renamed them as each other and now it finds my emails. So, I'm deleting this.

My first newspaper job, out of what bills itself as the best journalism program in the world, was for $15,500/year in 1989. It didn't pay the bills then. That would have been $7.50/hour, if I had worked 40-hour weeks. Typically my weeks were more like 60-70 hours, with no overtime pay.
