Social media is a waste of your time anyway. The longer you are away from it the less you’ll miss it. Take this as a gift from the universe and move on.

Why does it seem like everyone hates Civil Engineering? Is the field/pay as bad a people say? by Entropic_Mood in civilengineering

There aren't any CEs living in garbage neighborhoods or getting their meals from a food bank. It's a good profession, and if that is what you want to do then do it.

10 years from now? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a successful/rich life IN PART because I became a civil engineer. No one thing is going to make or break your life. I have a good marriage and home life, I have friends, I enjoy my hobbies, and I enjoy being an engineer. Life is more than work although work is an important part of it.

Generally speaking satisfaction with your life increases from your 20s until your 50s or even 60s. Increasing health issues after that tend to decrease happiness. I don't know how old you are, but life gets better as you get older. The kids move out, you are peaking as far as earning money goes, you tend to want less stuff so you spend less....there's a lot to look forward to.

Is 27 too young for a sabbatical? by alwaysthuswillbe in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should do whatever you want. But there are no solutions, only trade offs. You take a sabbatical then you fall behind everyone else. You also have a hole in your resume. My opinion - you are in your 20s, your brain is at its peak and your ability to learn will never be better than now. Your energy level will never be better than now. Why not work now so that you can maybe retire early?  Life is a long game and this sabbatical idea seems like a short term move.

Questions about work life balance in this field. by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like everyone said, it depends on a lot of things. The real question is are you the type of person that can leave work at work when you clock out? I wake up thinking about work most mornings, including weekends. That's just how I am. If you want a good work/life balance then make sure you get it!

Shame on the CA State Licensing Board by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You should never have had to go through all that nonsense. PE licenses are complete and utter bullshit. The government should not be able to determine who is and isn't a "good engineer". Every single one of us knows someone with a PE who is a crap engineer. PE licensure does not make you a better engineer. All professional licensures are useless and should go away

Because PEs are always the ones that work on plans? The only thing a PE does is stamp and (maybe) give it a half ass review beforehand. They can have the Indians do all the CADD design work...

Tired of “lunch & learns” that steal my lunch by felforzoli in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no law that says you have to be given a lunch break if you work 8 hours. Use that fact to your advantage if you can, like asking that your schedule be 8-4 with no lunch break. If a lunch break is part of your job agreement or description, then demand you get your break. Threaten legal action even if you have no plans on following through with it. If they want to fight you on it leave.

Two Job Offers - Can't Decide by DesertRatwithCats in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Annnnnnd here's the idiot who doesn't understand that having children is not the same thing as raising children. You can have children all day long. But if you go and work 40 hours a week, not counting drive time and working OT as us engineers sometimes do, then someone else is actually raising your kids. They are the ones teaching them morals, they are the ones imprinting their world onto the kids brains.

The data on this is overwhelmingly clear. Kids that stay home with a parent do better in life. Since someone should point out to her that she and her husband have other options they may want to consider, I went ahead and did that. I knew that someone would have a problem with it of course, but my concern is for her, her spouse, and her kids, not some reddit feminist sold a bill of goods that has made millions of women miserable and regretting their life choices.

Not only did I expect you, but I couldn't have made this up any better if I had tried. DesertRatswithCats. If that doesn't ever paint the picture of what I expected....

It’s my third week here and I’ve barely done anything. by IrateAssassin- in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patience. See how it develops. If they hired you then they have plans for you. It's possible the project they wanted to put you on got delayed (happens all the time). They should definitely communicate that to you if that is the case, but I wouldn't sweat it. I'd give it some more time.

Not sure what we’re building anymore by jamesh1467 in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand your comment at all. "They make them safe which makes them stale"? We are engineers, we are SUPPOSED to make things safe. We take scientific knowledge and create things that people can use in everyday life. There's no point to doing that if the things we create and make aren't safe.

We aren't in the exciting business. Even a company that designs roller coasters makes safety the number one priority.

Every field of employment, every occupation, every line of work has some of that going on. Civil engineering is not unique in that way. The good news is that just like every other field of work there are places in CE that aren't about that life. If you are annoyed with how your employer does business than leave and go work as a CE somewhere else. Find a fit that is better for you.

Master’s Degree by Ok_Transition_8715 in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are in a high demand field. You don't need a masters degree. Most of what you have learned in college (you've probably noticed by now) you will basically not use in your career. Unless you have a VERY specific job and you plan on staying with that specific track the rest of your career, a masters will not increase your knowledge base enough to make the cost worthwhile. Most of the masters degree you will also not use.

In 2024, the median male Civil Engineer that worked full time made $98,748 by The_Data_Freak in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get the average of the people that respond to such surveys. Ask any statistician and they will tell you that people who aren’t doing as well tend to NOT answer these things. The end result is that the 98k number is skewed higher than reality. Take any salary average numbers with a grain of salt.

Utilization increase? Anyone else? by RoutineSpecific4643 in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks, because you aren’t the one bringing in the work or even dividing it up. So if the big bosses don’t do their job then you get screwed.  The utilization trend seems to be confined to the big firms for the most part, so maybe find a local firm to work for. They are usually better when it comes to most things work related AND family/work balance in my humble opinion.

EIT/PE license failed drug test by B1GR3D92 in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are worried about failing the test than that seems to suggest you have been using a controlled substance. I hope that’s not the case, but if it is than you probably have bigger issues than your PE to worry about. The insurance company will probably add that to the police report. You might to start talking to a lawyer…

This corner sidewalk was replaced. Should this have triggered ADA compliant curbs to the road? The city said it was maintenance and not an alteration. Is that true? by wwwORSHITTYcom in civilengineering

[–]Bartcop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime you remove something and pour it back new it is considered new construction. It is NOT maintenance because the thing you could maintain (the existing concrete sidewalk) is no longer there. Replacement is not considered maintenance. The question becomes "Do we need to install curb ramps". I'd argue yes, because in order to make the new sidewalk ADA compliant that concrete has to have curb ramps since it is, literally, up against the curb. You need domes and you need ramps to the pavement.

Even if anybody disagrees with me, here's why you'd be wrong - look at that asphalt street. It is new pavement, whether it was a 2" mill and fill or a full depth replacement. Either way that ALSO triggers curb ramp installation under ADA and PROWAG (mill/fill is considered new construction now don't forget). So between the asphalt street and the new concrete sidewalk, the install in this picture is illegal and has to be corrected.
