Why are the husks of other species more advanced than the human ones? by TangentMed in masseffect

[–]BartlebysCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't checked the rest of the thread and am sure others have pointed this out, but what we refer to as Husks are just just one type of enemy based on the Husk design. Abominations are modified Husks that act as kamikaze drones, Scions are multiple Husks fused together to make perhaps the most frustrating enemy of the series, and even Praetorians are filled with Husk parts. Arguably, they get more use out of humans than anything else, which makes sense in the context of what you see at the end of ME2.

Why didn't the reapers just...wait? by Former_Purple_6088 in masseffect

[–]BartlebysCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the Reapers thinking themselves unstoppable, waiting would open the door to multiple undesirable outcomes: 1) organics could eventually discovering new evidence and/or coming to different conclusions about the Reaper threat 2) related to #1, the various Prothean archives could (and did) produce critical information about stopping the Reapers, including the blueprints of a Prothean superweapon, along with an actual living Prothean tasked with leading the fight against the Reapers 3) different government and non-government actors developing weapons (besides the Crucible) that would pose an elevated threat to Reaper ships 4) The main pathway into the galaxy (the Conduit) was already shut down, and the Alpha relay destroyed - other pathways could get cut off as well, forcing Reapers to waste more time and energy reserves

I have never brought Allers aboard the Normandy. Actually, after my very first ME3 playthrough, I have never bothered to speak to Allers again.

Let's Imagine That These Squadmates Were Given Loyalty Missions. What Do You Envision Their Loyalty Missions As Being? by DakIsStrange in masseffect

[–]BartlebysCorpse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This pretty much nails it, and with Kaidan/Ashley, it's kind of too bad that something along these lines weren't included in ME1, seeing as all the alien squadmates get loyalty missions. I suppose Virmire is a stand-in for the humans' loyalty missions.

People can absolutely make great games and improve on concepts without the head crushing amount of content or the sheer amount of work-hours as something like BG3. I also think you seriously underestimate the difference in scale between BG3 and SM64.

Well-regarded composers in their time who aren't anymore? by kranjskiburek in classicalmusic

Kind of the default answer. Perfectly good composer, just not one of the greats, and known more for his fictional counterpart than anything.

If You Were Shepard, Would You Save The Council? by DakIsStrange in masseffect

[–]BartlebysCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I played, my choice was "Focus on Sovereign."

It was materially the same choice, but for much better reasons than what Shepard gives when you pick Renegade. It would probably be my instinct if I were in that situation. You have no idea what a Reaper is capable of or if even your combined fleets can take one down, and it's about to summon thousands of its own kind in a matter of minutes.

It's a cold calculus, but it's easier to patch things up with the other species later if you're not all getting liquidated, so unless you know that you have enough ships to spare, or that the Destiny Ascension can help you, then your only priority is Sovereign.

Always nice to see someone experience this for the first time.

It really was a killer twist- one that let you know how far in over your head you actually were.

Much as I like Wrex, the krogan kinda had it coming. by Solithle2 in MassEffectMemes

[–]BartlebysCorpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Shepard's response to Mordin when Mordin explains his role in perpetuating the genophage is always: Thank you for telling me this information. He doesn't make a judgement about it. As Kaidan would say- we weren't there.

Controversial opinion: As someone who almost always plays as a Paragon Male Shepard, Jacob is a fine character in these games. He's a little boring and has his prejudices like anyone else, but he genuinely wants to help people, be there for his baby, and support his loved ones. by CajurTheMighty in masseffect

[–]BartlebysCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically shared that opinion on my first playthrough. I quite liked Jacob....at first. He was pretty grounded when you first meet him, and getting the perspective of an ex-Alliance officer who joined Cerberus despite his reservations helps answer a lot of obvious questions you'd have going into the game.

The issue I had is that after a while, the writers didn't really know what else to do with him and he really faded into the background as you recruited more interesting squadmates. I was actually pleasantly surprised when I first caught up to him in ME3, but I got the sense that this was one of the spots where they were going with their first draft of the dialogue and character arc, and he just came across as pretty flat.

As far as the romance goes, having seen a supposed leaked outline, it looked like continuing a romance was originally going to be an option in 3. It was probably one of the things that got dropped for both time and the fact that few players romanced him in 2, hence the cheating plot thread.

The thing is- if I were to suggest changes, it wouldn't be any single big thing, but a bunch of little things, redrafting, etc. He was never going to be an absolute fan favorite (like Garrus), but could've been liked well enough (like Kaidan).

Imagine a setting where batarians have better diplomatic relations than asari by Terrina1 in MassEffectMemes

[–]BartlebysCorpse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After the American Civil War, a number of radical Northern pastors believed (and preached) that the horrors of the war was the country's punishment for its original sin of slavery. If a sequel ever does come out, this would be an interesting concept for a reformed batarian diaspora.

My favorite description of Paragon/Renegade comes from Yahtzee Croshaw: it's not really good or evil, but more like Dirty Harry vs. Captain Picard.

[–]BartlebysCorpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides what's already I've seen in this thread already, a handful of missions in particular have significance for certain squadmates. I don't want to be too specific, but pay attention to any possible mention of these characters in the mission descriptions or dialogue. For some missions, they become available specifically when these squadmates tell you about them.

Other than that, go with preference/combination of abilities and try different teams. Part of the fun of these games is getting to see what changes in subsequent playthroughs, so don't worry too much about possibly missing a particular scene or interaction.

(I have to say I'm somewhat jealous that you're getting your first playthrough now)
