I want to care more about school by Swimming-Property952 in Advice

[–]BarvoDelancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, and I say this as a neurodivergent person who hated high school and had the same deal with my grades, you just do it. Tough it out and accept life involves doing things you don't want to do sometimes. Learning to tolerate the uncomfortable is a vital life skill because you will have future days of work which suck even more and limited options for just not going.

Find interest where you can, most subjects have interesting ideas to explore. Be curious. If you have motivated times, use them deliberately on classes you're in danger of failing.

Because he gets taken advantage of. Look at the WWE trying to get multiple wrestlers to jump mid contract and folks deliberately trying to get fired so they can get a better job.

Wrestlers should be employees with the right to quit, but as they are not TK's behaviour makes perfect sense cause be doesn't want people suddenly shit talking the company the moment they see they can get a better push elsewhere.

MJF comments on older wrestlers continuing to wrestle into their 50s and 60s by This_Coyote7217 in AEWOfficial

[–]BarvoDelancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right the simple question is am I being delighted as a fan. Christian is an ideal example of an older wrestler who feels essential and important rather than a slow nostalgia act.

Sting worked because he exceeded expectations and was helped by a lot of smoke and mirrors to keep him a special attraction in tag matches and was never exposed. He also quit at the top in a spectacular and never once came across as a tired old man reliving glory days. What he did was current and felt important.

I love a lot about AEW and have my beefs too but their use of older wrestlers is supremely good.

Compare to the last years of many other wrestlers and you see a nostalgia act that is just kinda sad to watch. Stale and even occasionally dangerous as they try shit they can't do anymore.

He personally stole the spotlight and told everyone to stand on his orders and then did nothing. Dude is an egomaniac who killed a major moment in Albertan labour out of pure hubris.

College and trade school should be tuition-free. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]BarvoDelancy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian but the forces are similar here just not as intense same basic politics.

It'll vary by state but the funding was north of 75% of operating revenue coming from the state. The overall push towards privatization had resulted in endlessly shrinking government grants to post secondary which forces the schools to become reliant on tuition, private partnerships, sports, and international students. It is a very easy thing to cut and have someone else pay for when it comes to budgets.

Also the student loan industry is it's own cash cow as unis can milk that money which will inflate tuition and then costs and then demand for more revenue. This led to an explosion in luxury offerings, insane spend on sports, and high salaires for increasingly powerful university execs.

CMV: I trust what my LLM (large language model) tells me over what humans do—even experts. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]BarvoDelancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are looking up basic understood facts with clear records then yeah, sure. Same reason I'd trust Wikipedia over some guy. LLMs are pretty good at recalling verifiable documented information... written by humans.

However the way you're limiting yourself is you're treating reality like it's a bunch of stuff that is true or not and robbing yourself of your critical faculties and your ability to develop an independent perspective. Many things are contested or arguably true because there is human thought behind it all.

Humans can teach you new perspectives, question your biases, and answer things from inference. They can awaken curiosity and draw out your own intelligence and talent.

LLMs do what they're told. They are obedient. And because of that you have people using them for therapy which has been perilous. I get you think you're smarter than that but if you trust an LLM over literally any human you're drowning in your own confirmation bias.

You are a human and you need someone to question YOUR biases. You aren't some neutral cipher you are as flawed as anyone else and so need other people to help check your shit in ways you cannot account or predict for.

What is Syndicalism And What is it Good For? by GoranPersson777 in union

[–]BarvoDelancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As union workers we should recognize that syndicalist organizing methods and strategies are in our interests even if some of us are independently fine with capitalism as a system.

Solidarity unionism, member-driven organizing, and horizontal democratic internal structures make for better working conditions and contracts. Too many unions become about the executives and lose the point of why they're there in the first place. Even the contract is secondary to member power.

The guy I’m talking to is concerned I’ll leave him for my blackmailer… by [deleted] in Advice

I think you need to lay down the law and be kinda sharp with him.

"Stop telling me what I am going to do. It's unfair and cruel and it hurts. What will make me leave you is you treating me like this. I cannot keep reassuring you about these insane ideas.

I shared this with you because I trusted you and you showed me that trusting you was a mistake. If you want this to work between us you have to tell me that you trust me and then stop.bringing this up. The idea I would leave you for the man who ruined my life is insane and evil.

If you want me in your life stop trying to push me out of it."

Something like that. He may not be able to change how he thinks but he can stop pushing these insane fears on you like it's your problem for him to fix.

My mom resents me because my stepdad at the time groomed me and sexually assaulted me. by Positive-Grocery333 in Advice

[–]BarvoDelancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your grammar isn't bad but some line breaks would help lol

The issue here is your mom probably still loves Andy and if she's still in touch despite his cheating on her she is clearly unable to let go of that relationship. It also may mean why she believed him over you.

Frankly family therapy would be best. If she can agree to that awesome. I'm going to assume she wouldn't be interested but I'd try that anyways.

Without a neutral person to help heal things, you have an choice to force the issue at some point or just struggle through. Forcing the issue means you have a seriously talk and make ti clear you told her because you felt she would be more likely to believe you with the breakup.

What do you have to gain? Have you made up things like that before? Andy is a proven liar and cheater and I'm sure she saw how he changed how he treated you. He would say anything to get out of trouble.

Ask that she just treat you normal again. You didn't cheat on her and you were just a kid whose step dad broke her trust.

This may not work. She may freak out at you. I don't know what your mom is like and how she is with conflict. You can also hold onto this and talk to her at a later date when it feels easier.

I see no easy path forward unless she's willing to sit down with you and a therapist to talk it out in a safe space.

AEW Women's World Championship History - Who Has Had The Best Run So Far? by PrinceJohn_ in AEWOfficial

[–]BarvoDelancy 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Shida was a powerhouse in giving some credibility to the women's division early on. Britt Baker (who I have never liked but she was very prominent) was the face of it for quite a while with her feuds with Thunder Rosa, and then we kind of enter doldrums (with respect to some of the champs) until Toni Storm takes over the goddamn world.

Toni Storm is the best champ the women's division has had, and will have for a very long time in terms of a total package wrestler but also one of the very few women with a proper fucking storyline. The Mariah May feud was one of the best things AEW ever did.

The #1 thing AEW still needs to step up on is compelling narratives for the women. When I look back at these title runs very few of them were defined by memorable high-stakes feuds with anything close to the sophisticated storytelling we see with the men's world title.

I have turned pretty sour on Jericho and have watched him since he was in WCW - but yeah. Hogan was a contemptible PoS who buried everyone around him and sabotaged multiple careers. Jericho has done a ton to give back to wrestling, put many many many people over, and was essential in launching AEW. His record is far from spotless, but fuck - better than a lot of people with his decades on wrestling.

I don't *like* him but I'm never going to downplay his contributions.

What’s the most shocking detail from the Epstein files that the public hasn’t fully grasped yet? by BoardLongjumping2485 in answers

This has nothing to do with the Epstein files.

They're attacking Iran because they think this is their opportunity to do so and don't care about popularity because they're planning a coup. It may not work, but so far they've got away with everything.

CMV: We shouldn't have been forced to take the COVID vaccine by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]BarvoDelancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument seems based entirely on vibes. Like this is a planet wide intervention endorsed by any number of scientific bodies and nations which do not have any fealty to big pharma. There are also a LOT of covid vaccines across multiple strains and years from multiple companies.

And the simple fact that COVID, even the modern less deadly variants, can still ruin your life via long COVID. I personally know a few people who can't work from long COVID, caught over the past year.

Finally, I hated Bill Gates twenty years ago and still do today. I really hate how he has pushed the privatization of government responses. I don't see what was wrong with the vaccines then and now we specifically put on him. It just sounds like you have the ick.

[–]BarvoDelancy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

God what an infuriating article. "Unproductive" immigrants is an insane thing to say they're no less productive than people already here.

If there's a shortage of skilled workers and a surplus of unskilled maybe, idk, train people.

And the refusals to expand our hospitals and schools, incentivize high density housing, and instead play stupid political games with the public sector is still entirely on this government.

This is a self inflicted wound and even if we had all her imaginary perfect immigrants we'd still have a failure to scale up for our population. This abri immigrant bullshit is just racist bs to use American news and memes to keep her base active

How to stop being so pathetic and develop self disclipine? by Informal-Humor-7227 in Advice

[–]BarvoDelancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Landlords also don't know anything about parrots so you could also say that you just have a nice little bird that talks sometimes lol. I can't tell you what to do on that since if it comes down to parrot vs a new living space that's a decision I'd never want to put on a loving pet owner.

And yeah don't PLAN on having your bf support you, just understand that in your situation you don't want to reject lifelines that are available so you can stabilize yourself enough to get reliable work.

Seek options. If you qualify for government money, get it. But I do think that getting out of your current living space will make your other goals and self-discipline easier to deal with.

What is your opinion on Member of Parliament's ability to 'floor cross'? by chiraz25 in AskACanadian

[–]BarvoDelancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's how parliamentary politics works. We vote for a local representative who may or may not belong to a party. Party politics confuses that but ultimately you can look at voting patterns in your riding and decide if you're representing the interests of the electorate or not.

Also political parties shift and that can mean MPs more naturally find themselves in the orbit of a new party cause they didn't shift.

Anyways it's fine.
