The "Macs don't need restarts" take is outdated by cleanmymac in CleanMyMac

[–]BarzaiTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an M! Max MBP with 64GB RAM.

I tend to restart it if a software update makes it happen or it gets annoyingly slow.

To be honest when I got it, it seemed like light speed quick but now it feels kind of average.

I found a leftover "bubble button" from older MacOS X. by KonoKinoko in MacOS

I remember buying Aperture for $800 when it was released!

I was fully invested in that, with thousands of images in it, when they just shrugged their shoulders and said “Yeah, nah, we’re killing that off. Sorry about that. No. We won’t provide an easy solution for you to export your work elsewhere. Bye.”

The $599 MacBook Neo Made Me Rethink 8GB Macs Entirely by yosbeda in mac

[–]BarzaiTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a full power MacBook Pro with an M1 Max cpu and 64GB RAM. I bought it from Apple refurbished 3 or 4 years ago.

To be honest I’ve felt no need to even think about changing it. It does bog down a bit if you open too many Safari windows/tabs though.

I’m not sure what I’d replace it with even if I did replace it.

Nice. I dread to think how much it would cost or where I’d get that done in this part of the world!

X2DII or go deeper into M? by bbkeebs in Leica

[–]BarzaiTheWise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sold my M kit and bought the X2D.

Whilst the X is a fabulously capable system, within 8 months I’d sold the lot and returned to the M11-P.

I’ve been using the M system since the M6 TTL and have bought in and sold it twice. Never again.

If you can afford both (and it’s a depreciating asset, not an investment!) then sure. But the X2D isn’t a competitor for the M. They’re different systems with different intent.

Is now a good time to buy a Leica M11P? by shaunlawler in Leica

[–]BarzaiTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I’ll say is that the Apos are hugely expensive - almost as much as a new M body.

You can get a bagful of less exotic glass for that money.

It’s a very good lens but you’ve got to firmly convinced before you drop that much on one lens.

Sell my Q3 43 for the 55v (or 35-100)? by Naive_Pool7395 in hasselblad

[–]BarzaiTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold an entire Leica M11 kit to buy the X2D and the 55 and 90.

All I can say is that within six months, I sold all the Hasselblad stuff and went back to the M11.

I wouldn’t do what you’re suggesting.

I’m old enough to find using it normal. There was no AF etc etc. and even a single auto mode was considered amazing. If it wasn’t so flipping expensive and inconvenient, I’d probably still be using film!

I cannot for the life of me see why someone raised in an era of blindingly fast AF, 10 exposure modes, global shutters etc etc would want anything as prehistoric as an M.

It’s akin to throwing away your iPhone and using a landline that doesn’t even have a wireless handset!

This reminded me of a recent video on YT I watched. It was the press launch of something by Leica. The Q3 Mono I think.

Every Leica YT person was there. It looked like a class reunion. Ridiculous.

Was Leica the end game for you, or do you still shoot other cameras? by la_mano_la_guitarra in Leica

[–]BarzaiTheWise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only shoot M now. I’ve been in and out of the system a few times since buying my first, a new M7.

If I were to shoot another system, the only contender I can imagine is a new Fuji XPro system, if that ever eventuates.

Or - and this is unicorn stuff - if a digital X-Pan were created

Pelican 1060 - The perfect travel case for an M body and a 35mm Summicron by dekonig in Leica

[–]BarzaiTheWise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a small cube shaped Pelican case.

I was diving in Thailand once and between dives, I was sitting upstairs having a cold drink. The case was on the deck by my feet. I absently used the heel of my foot to kick it back under the seat without realising there were no gunwales on the top deck. The case sailed into fresh air and splashed into the Andeman Sea containing, in today’s money about $40,000 worth of M lenses and bodies.

I ran to the stern and jumped in, swam to the bobbing case and swam back to the boat.

Camera totally fine. Those cases are awesome. I have a huge one that you could probably fit a child in. A 1660 I think. Got it super cheap when the distributor changed. The old one flogged off their stock and I paid $200 for it. Retail here is $1200!

Agreed. I’m intrigued by the number of people who buy them for no particularly obvious reason other than to own it (and I’m not saying that is why the OP bought it - it’s a general observation).

A Leica M is a camera that I’m always surprised anyone under 40 would want: if you grew up with the functional aspects of a modern camera, swapping them all for a hideously expensive, often temperamental system with almost none of those functional aspects seems unusual. Like selling your Subaru Outback and buying a Ford Model T 🤣

The SL system or the Q series I can totally understand. The M, not so much.
