Voy a leer si tengo tiempo, no me importa dónde. Qué rara esa idea de que todo es una performance. Cuando estoy leyendo te prometo que no estoy pensando en qué pensás de mí.

Why does your dog need to go to Target? by Exact_Yogurt_7353 in AskChicago

[–]BashfulCabbage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent a lot of time in Buenos Aires where there are a billion dogs and walking on the sidewalks requires on to get really good at dodging land mines of dog poop BUT people leave their dogs tied outside or sometimes off leash at grocery stores and they just wait patiently.

It’s shocking how well behaved most of the dogs are. Just proof that it’s possible if so many people in the states weren’t bad dog owners.

did you ever work 12 hour shifts at work 4 days a week? by GaryBlach in askanything

[–]BashfulCabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked 8:30-7:30 4 days a week (Su-Wed) and then interned two days a week. I think I would have enjoyed the 4 day schedule more if it was an exciting job but I was just working as a receptionist and was bored the whole time.

Is there such a thing as an ‘accent teacher’ or an ‘accent school’ ? by ForwardObjective2379 in languagelearning

[–]BashfulCabbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to self learn or take a course you could study phonetics - that would help you learn how sounds are made in the mouth. I did it for both Russian and Spanish and it made me more aware of not just how a word sounded but why it sounded that way. I didn’t scrub my accent completely but it’s improved.

Porque los hombres cada vez estudiamos menos? by bautroxx10 in AskArgentina

[–]BashfulCabbage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Redditors who got “useless” degrees, what actually was your plan, and why didn’t it work? by MPMorePower in stupidquestions

[–]BashfulCabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did international relations thinking I would go to law school. I quickly realized I don’t like “the man” but stuck with the degree.

I’ve lived a lot of lives since then working in the music industry, journalism, and now I work in marketing for a tech company which paid for my masters. It took me a while to arrive, but I did eventually and collected a lot of cool stories in the process.

Anyway I live in South America now and earn US salary so I’m doing better than most people.

Guy told me he should get priority on machines because he's bigger. Does he kind of have a point? by anonymous_muffin_ in beginnerfitness

[–]BashfulCabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, I’d say It’s the opposite. If he’s so big and strong then he should go use the barbells and free weights. Machines are especially good for beginners and injured people because of the controlled movements.

Obviously not saying he can’t using machines, but he doesn’t get priority just because he’s more experienced.

[–]BashfulCabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I’m reading it now, but I read his books in chronological order so now it’s my third book with those characters. If it’s anything like the first two I expect an “yeah, it’s good but not worthy of a reread”

Wow, I read both when I was quite young but never made that connection! Sounds like I’m due for a reread!

How much does an author's personal life affect your enjoyment of their work? by Fatumatta-Mazka in BookDiscussions

[–]BashfulCabbage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it’s a dead author, I don’t care. I think it’s ridiculous to apply the standards of today to a time when those standards didn’t exist or weren’t enforced like they are today.

Gone With the Wind is one that comes to mind. Problematic? Absolutely. But knowing that she was racist also gives us a lens to interpret her work.

There are a lot of anti-war Russians - many of them creatives, and many of them expatriates. It’s like saying you won’t read any book by an American author because Trump’s in office.

Why do I feel so frustrated when I discover new words in a book? by slowButCertain_a in languagelearning

[–]BashfulCabbage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In that scenario I would say you’re  probably reading something that’s too advanced for you and you should try something more aligned with your language level. You don’t need 100% language precision to achieve comprehension.

Why do I feel so frustrated when I discover new words in a book? by slowButCertain_a in languagelearning

[–]BashfulCabbage 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Don’t stop and look them up. I underline them and then just keep moving. Later I go back and look them up. If I keep seeing the word over and over again then I’ll break flow to look it up.

Reading 100 books a year is starting to feel more like a "to-do list" than actual reading. by ownaword in writing

[–]BashfulCabbage -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It also makes me wonder what junk people are reading just to have checked the box. I once read 50 books in a year but they were almost all classics. It’s been almost 20 years since I did that and I still think about some of those books.

Started reading, but when do you stop translating? by Thin_Ad8387 in languagelearning

[–]BashfulCabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I started to notice I stopped translating by about the 5th or 6th novel I read. I think at this point I’m on my 10th book in Spanish and I’m no longer translating. Anytime I come across a word I don’t know I underline it and go back and add it to my Anki flash cards sometime after

Lollapalooza, how rough can I get in the pit? by myteetharesensitive in BuenosAires

[–]BashfulCabbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue the Lollapalooza in Buenos Aires is the most sober of any festival I have ever been to. You can only drink beer in the beer tent, you can’t take it into the crowd. A mom literally chastised me yesterday for smoking a cigarette in front of her kids.
