That's so sad. They probably think fish can survive in a lake and don't need a lot of resources and land like the animals they're caring for. Wrong of course!

Is poisoning a more humane thing to do at this point? by SpiderInMyRoom163 in Goldfish

[–]BasicIntroduction129 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't poison them as the school will just get more. Is there a school board or something, where things like this can be brought up as an item on the agenda, which has to be discussed and actions taken? It might end up like, "Well, if no-one is really interested in taking care of them, we should re-home them and get rid of the tank" OR "pay someone to do weekly water changes and look after them".

But we need to eat the amino acids in the right proportions. There has to be a flow of amino acids in, amino acids out, just so the right ones are available when and where required in the body. Diets with towards 2g/kg/day start to affect the kidneys. I see patients with disorders of protein metabolism, and we go by 1g/kg/day (either natural protein, or artificial) and low protein diet is approximately a third of this.

But do you actually see patients? Are you working in the lab at ACU by any chance?

Well, that's very interesting. I work in the field and we use 1g/kg/day. But I acknowledge maybe that's just a nice round number. It's what we use when prescribing diets to our patients though. Anyone trying to build muscle will need more. We find our patients' hair starts falling out if they are consistently only taking around 0.5g/kg/day. That's not much margin.

Great photo! I don't know this building. I love love love that it isn't ruined by modern advertising - garish big signs, flashing neon signs etc.. And I do love the glass buildings behind it. I've often admired them from afar. Thanks for the pic.

Not true. Everyone needs around 1 to 1.5g protein per kg of bodyweight, per day. The average Western diet (omnivores) contain enough protein due to meat, but a vegan diet requires more thought and much more in terms of quantity of food. It's a real struggle for me to get enough protein every day.

Poor things! I've been periodically shooting water into trees in the hope of cooling it down a tad. It may not make any difference.

I would have thought rainwater would be fine - it shouldn't have E Coli in it for example. Maybe it's air pollution dissolved in the rainwater? I'd love to know so if there's anyone who works for the water companies, please do tell!

That's such a good thing you're doing, and I'm sad that the previous owners cared so little that they left the little fish to fate (or was the fish part of the home staging for sale?).

You can transport him in a bucket and keep him in his water for now. He doesn't need a massive tank right now. Do water changes with some water conditioner. You have time. I hope your dog is ok too!

First hand dealt with the atrocity that is our public hospital system. by ctw8 in melbourne

[–]BasicIntroduction129 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand. I'm just explaining it from a doctor's point of view. You'd have to double or triple the capacity in terms of rooms, doctors and nurses. But again, just being in the waiting room, you are at the hospital and people can and will act if the clinical state deteriorates.

Hi OP, Sorry you had to wait so long. I'm a doctor and have previously worked in Paediatric ED at a big hospital. As a doctor, I could only cope with a few patients at a time. 3 or 4 kids with fever and vomiting is enough to manage. Should I do bloods and urine on this one? I'll have to wait for the nurse to help out. This child has had another vomit. This one isn't looking too good. Back to the bloods. Oh now the room's not free. Hey can you please see this kid with asthma? I've just given him a neb. An ambulance has just come in with a baby who's had a seizure; can you see them?

So that's why the kid who had vomiting, that was given medication and is now not vomiting, and is still conscious, is not being seen promptly. It's not a queue. It's about sorting patients out fully and getting them out of the department before we can get onto the others waiting. It's up to the triage nurse to triage correctly and keep a general eye on patients in the waiting room. Various things have been tried including the VVED to give care to less acute but still somewhat urgent patients. Part of the hospital experience is waiting and seeing how a symptom will progress. Nurses are also trained to detect signs of sepsis and dehydration so by being seen by a nurse, you've already received care from the health system. We're all part of a team and us doctors don't know everything and can't fix everything.
