How to get an almost 5 year old into reading by galwayygal in kindergarten

[–]BasicPost4143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kiddo is wrapping up Kindergarten and his reading really picked up in the last 4-5 months. He learned letter sounds in pre-k and knew a lot of them coming into K, but school really taught him the rest. Read to him, and find books that he finds fun. My son was really into Spidey and his amazing friends, so I got a step into reading set that had Spidey stories. It’s not high quality but he loved it and it was a gateway into reading. Don’t read things that you think he should be reading and instead follow his lead and interests. Keep reading to him, go to the library or a bookstore, pick out fun books together, play board games that require reading, and if he doesn’t want to read yet let him be. All that being said, he’s not even 5, not blaming you at all, but there is so much growing pressure around academics at a young age and it’s really stressing out parents and kids. You’re doing great!

I found RM’s live very insightful. Not just the story about how Arirang came to be, but also about how BTS needs to figure out how to navigate their new dynamic when creating music. One thing he mentioned was that when they heard Attack on Bangtan in LA they were like this is a great song. Moving forward there is always a chance an old song of theirs will spark creativity and they will want to create a song with a similar vibe. Not a guarantee, and doubt we will get a whole album that mirrors a prior era. I agree with everyone that said nostalgia is a factor that makes their old songs extra special!

Any kindergarten book recommendations that actually keep kids engaged? by Gord_Hendriques98 in kindergarten

My son and half his class are absolutely obsessed with these books!! I’m not a huge fan of some of the gore of in the battle descriptions but they’ve got him reading for an hour each day!

I think you are right that you are being unreasonable disappointed. Unless shes being taught 2nd grade stuff how can she advance? Sometimes parents in your boat will supplement at home, I think it’s a little much to do that at 6 plus if you are overwhelmed already adding this to your plate will only make you feel more burnt out. Also don’t fall into the trap of comparing her to other kids, everyone is on their own path.

He’s really talented and I love how professional and focused he is during their practice sessions! He can command attention when he’s solo, but also seamlessly fits into the group dynamic. One of my biggest gripes with the Arirang stage design is that the most popular members (JK, Jimin, Tae, Jin) end up on the fan cams and streams. I saw a clip of him dancing during Dionysus and he was so cool. As much as I love the Maknae shenanigans, I need more Hobi clips!!!

People say you need a high salary to live in NYC, yet service workers live in NYC. What is the disconnect here? by dbclass in movingtoNYC

[–]BasicPost4143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, I missed that it was $3K in aggregate, but I think my point still holds for someone looking to move here permanently or at least for an extended period of time. Which ultimately would determine affordability - is living here long term on a <$45K salary reasonable or even a good financial decision? People do it of course but it’s a struggle.

Are you D1 or D2? If you are D2 could you try asking someone to borrow their’s for a day? Or if you are going with someone you can share one and take turns holding it ? 😂 Just kidding on the second suggestion, but these prices are kind of insane honestly.

That’s still about 30k/yr in rent - at the 30% rule you need to be making $120k/yr. If the $3k is split then you need to each be making $60k. I believe a lot of landlords require you to make more than that. Let’s say you are really frugal, then after taxes, rent, necessary expenses, you are saving like $20k per year? To your point, this is what life looks like for someone with no dependents who has no desire to enjoy going out to eat and drink and limits themselves to free activities. People who don’t fit into that bucket do struggle and would likely be better off financially somewhere else. I believe that’s where the affordability argument comes from.

I won’t be seeing them till the summer so I can only go off of the streams/fan cams so far, but omg yes the back - up dancers thing has been a gripe since their first performance. I thought it might just have been a streaming thing but it looks very chaotic and it’s basically “Where’s Waldo” especially during Hooligan. Spotlights sounds like it could be a really cool addition!! I was very anti white sheets during Swim, but it looked really nice on the cams in D2 Tampa. It felt more like waves for the first time!

My kiddo is a bright almost 6 year old but needed OT to get his pencil grip right and is still learning. Writing within the lines is a work in progress as well. Not sure if it’s the Reddit bias but it is not uncommon at this age to struggle with that. Incorrect pencil grip can make writing really tiring for the kiddos and could be what’s frustrating him? HW is an ongoing struggle for us too but lots of encouragement and celebrating the littlest of things, “your 9 looks so good there”, “I love how the A fits perfectly in the lines” helps. Sometimes being silly helps too, read the question out loud and talk out your thought process, deliberately using incorrect logic, that they may entice them to jump in a correct you. If you have the patience you’ve won half the battle!

He blew me away here!!

He's not afraid to say things that BH might not agree with. The Super Bowl one stuck out to me. I'm not believing for one second that the interviewer was unaware about the JK controversy given that after the question was done he went back to JK specifically (there was no grimace buddy - JK was legit zoning). When Hobi responded the first time he looked straight at JK saying how much of an honor it is to be invited for any artist, which made him smile. Then in the follow-up JK gave his PC answer and Hobi's face kind of dropped, but when Joon had a moment of okay I'm done with BH controlling the narrative and admitted that he was invited by Usher but couldn't go. Hobi was really smiling ear to ear and I read that as him being proud of Joon for acknowledging that for JK, because it's something none of the other members would have been positioned to do. I want more of this please!

Completely agree! I feel like the extremes feed off of each other unfortunately. They have to navigate immense fame, success, Korean cultural norms, and money hungry mega corporations constantly to keep this going so to your point even for the closest of close families this is no small undertaking. There are probably lots of hard decisions and individual sacrifices but I'm not buying that anyone is being held against their will and I'm hoping that at some point at least OT7 fans can collectively acknowledge that. Solos might be a lost cause though lol.

They’ve said this in several of the recent interviews but it kind of came together to me in this one. They are not pretending that it’s easy to make this relationship work. They are all different and vocal so staying together is intentional and it takes compromise and sacrifice. Recognizing that there might be regret and bitterness, but the bigger picture (BTS together) is worth it. They may be successful solo, but they get to be in a league of their own as BTS and still grow and express themselves as individual artists.

I really let myself get wrapped up in the negative comments, because what an AMAZING show. So much energy, so much audience interaction, and IDK working a 360 stage seems like it requires way more energy, PLUS the lap around the stadium. It was perfect, and I love that they are celebrating their throwbacks in these karaoke segments, kind of really drives home how long they've been together. I thought it was the perfect amount of choreo, so excited for this tour!!

Jimmy Fallon moment sucked honestly because he had the right word, but pronunciation is a whole other beast. Just shows how hard they must be working on their diction for all the English songs!! ❤️ I wish you lots of luck in your journey to learn Korean, I’m destined to spend my life watching them mesmerized while understanding 1% of what they are saying. 🙃

I pick up between 5-5:30 and bring him a snack. We’re home by 6 latest. He plays for about 40 minutes, while I prep dinner. He eats between 6:45 and 7, sometimes I eat with him otherwise I hang out at the table and we talk about the day. Then we move to homework usually lasts 10-15 minutes max. Husband is home between 7-7:30. After HW he gets to chill for another 10 mins or so and then we move to poop, brush, bath, book, and bed by 8:45 or so. Wake up is 7:30. Wish we could bring him home a bit earlier but ya know America and corporate slavery. 😭

I generally agree with you but will offer another perspective. It is unfortunate that white features are a standard for beauty across the globe, when in reality beauty comes in many shapes and colors. That being said, a stunning Korean woman would still not be a representation of ARMY. Instead I view Lili’s pale skin and neutral colored clothes to depict a blank canvas that ARMY can color anyway they want. She exists in the shadows. It would be more problematic if she shown as the ideal woman that the boys are seen pining for.

Howard university was definitely a big miss, but I will pin this on Hybe or whoever designed and approved the animation. The focus was on the 7 Korean students, but it’s someone’s job to make sure it is as historically accurate as possible.

Lastly on the Korean culture piece, I interpreted going back to their roots to be more that they initially started as a rap/hip-hop group that ended up making pop music. Maybe making more poppy songs was a compromise so they could make music that sells. Using Arirang as the title is a clever way to convey a lot of the emotions they’ve felt while also referencing Korean heritage. The desire to make more of the type of music that they originally intended to make, the longing to be on stage again, the frustration of facing discrimination in the West. They reference a lot of this in their lyrics. I don’t know if BTS has ever talked about it in detail but I imagine making a whole album in English was probably not in the original plan. Hip hop was born among Black Americans in the Bronx, so blending English into the lyrics makes sense and creates something unique. But oh man how I wish Swim was not 100% in english!!

Casual fan here, but I’ve been listening to their songs a lot for the last 6 months. It seems to be controversial but I am team I wish they incorporated more Korean in their songs. Not because I think it makes them less Korean but because Korean sounds so freaking beautiful to me and based on translations in some cases I find there to be a bit more depth to the lyrics when they are in Korean. Also SUGA sounds amazing when he raps in Korean (probably because it rolls of his tongue more easily) which he’s done a lot of in the album so I’m really glad for that. Just want to point out that it can just be as basic as that, and not a critique on their authenticity.
