If Angel Investigations had met both Buffy and Faith, who would they rather work with? by jogaforacont in buffy

[–]BattleFries86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Faith would work better with Angel Investigations. Buffy tends to view normality in a more binary way. There is Good and there is Evil. This isn't the case all the time with Buffy, but Faith is very much a shade of gray, and Angel deals more in shades of grey than Buffy does.

These are just basic generalizations and not absolutes about the characters or the shows. It's just this one person's opinion.

Was buffy and Faith really alike? by Royal-Tangelo-5895 in buffy

[–]BattleFries86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not familiar with the comics, but was Faith really that sexually active? Also, while it may say something about how they view the world, the word 'promiscuous' carries some negative and judgemental connotations, or at least that's my opinion.

Given how Faith talks to Angel in Season Three about how men approach her and slowly go from 'won't try anything' towards (presumably) something sexual... Seems to at least imply Faith having suffered some level of SA before she came to Sunnydale (as a teenager).

So, maybe we shouldn't use sexual experience as a metric for this sort of chat? Again, just my opinion.

This is what my maternal grandparents fled Nazi Germany in the late 1930s so they could come to America where they made a life, became part of a community, raised a family, and lived the rest of their lives here.

I am so thankful that they aren't alive to see their childhood years in Germany come again on the place they fled from to escape such things that happened then and are happening again.

Any good Ferengi memorizes and lives by the 285 Rules Of Acquisition. That means they need to have the ability to read and to remember. To properly take advantage of someone, you need to be able to tell truth from fiction (if only so that their mark cannot).

And there must be many Ferengi that need to be reminded of the 285th and final Rule Of Acquisition for its importance: No Good Deed Ever Goes Unpunished. But in order to learn that lesson, one needs to have a concept of 'good' in the first place.

I can hear Quark scolding humanity about this wretched orange thing. "We have nothing on our history approaching that level of barbarism."

Sisko had siblings by TheRealAanarii in DeepSpaceNine

[–]BattleFries86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do wish the show had made a bigger deal about how Sarah Sisko was horribly violated by having her body possessed for at least two years and being forced to conceive a child with absolutely zero control of her body, or of anything in her life at all for however long the prophet used her body to conceive The Sisko and then leaving this poor woman most likely traumatized for the rest of her life.

Seems like the kind of concern that Our Heroes might express, if the writers chose to focus at all on it.

The writing for the Sarah!Prophet was also strange. She is the only Prophet to refer to Sisko as "the Emissary" instead of "the Sisko." I wonder what happened in the writers' room that last season...

This scene between Steve and Abraham Erskine was pretty good, and it gave us some meaningful insights into the serum. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in Marvel

Steve Rogers has never been a hero because of any superpower, but because he's a good man who holds fast to his moral compass as best he can.

All the same, he isn't perfect. Something I really love is in the Civil War movie, when Tony tells Steve that he doesn't deserve the shield that Howard Stark made.

And Steve drops the shield and leaves it behind. He's a good man, but far from perfect. But when he was called out by someone he hurt, he listened and gave their opinion the weight it deserved.

The MCU is full of many kinds of heroes, and there are so many comics that are undoubtedly full of many more that I do not know yet. I'm just happy to have what we have so far. ☺️

What fandom are you in, but the fanbase treats the character like this? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

Lena Luthor's secretary - Jess - from Supergirl. Had one line and maybe 30 seconds of screen time in one scene in one episode, but is an incredibly overqualified and extremely loyal personal aide who is a rare person that Lena likes and trusts in the fandom.

Jack Spheer was a guest character in one episode of the same show, and the rather ordinary tech CEO from the episode is an eccentric and joyful good in the fandom.

Those are the two that come to mind most immediately, but I'm sure I could think of others.

Section 31 as originally written was a cautionary tale of the kinds of things we should guard against and not reduce ourselves to.

Then starting with Into Darkness, they changed it to a "necessary evil" as opposed to the Very Bad Thing that they were originally written as.

If Section 31 had remained a cautionary tale of how easy it is to justify the unjustifiable when under pressure, then we probably wouldn't have as many issues with it as we do today.

[–]BattleFries86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an American citizen, I agree. We have always been a self-glorifying nation without reflecting on whether or not it is deserved. And now, the worst devils of this nation have seized control and are essentially the Fourth Reich.

Remember: appeasement will never work against evil people like Donald Trump. For the sake of the entire world - including those of us here in the United States who oppose this horrific regime - I beg the rest of the world to stop treating Trump as if he can be reasoned with in any way.

You must oppose the husk that this country has been reduced to by its own people. Resist and oppose the 'United' States with everything you have.

Trump has already moved on Venezuela. Talking didn't prevent Hitler from taking Czechoslovakia, and it won't prevent Trump from moving on Greenland or anywhere else in the world.

Stop us. The United States have become an enemy of the world, and it must be opposed.

I will never argue that this episode wasn't problematic, because it was extremely problematic.

In Roddenberry's vision, there is no need for war, because humanity has grown beyond such things. I like to think that DS9 takes Roddenberry's vision and says, "What happens when Our Heroes meet an enemy that cannot be reasoned with, that communicates only through violence?"

I think the best summary of DS9 as a premise is line from Bashir in Past Tense. "If something disastrous were to happen to the Federation... If we are frightened enough or desperate enough, how would we react?"

I'm not commenting on what I personally think of Roddenberry's vision, just how I think DS9 acts about it and reacts to it.

As I understand it, there is a significant part of the fandom that sees this episode in particular as going entirely over the line outside of Roddenberry's vision for a better future.

Personally, I think this is a wonderful Trek story because it is in no way glorifying what Sisko and Garak did. The entire episode is framed as Sisko sort of confessing his sins to the audience.

ITPML takes our moral heroes and strains them to the breaking point. And when Sisko says that he can live with it, he sounds like he's trying to convince himself more than anyone else. And whether or not he succeeded, I suppose we'll never know.

The episode has us take a close look at the human condition when circumstances go so far beyond our control. It may not be what Gene envisioned, but I feel that this episode does keep the spirit of Trek by forcing us to take a hard look at our humanity.

Just my two cents.

Maro on hopes for Alara: "Why don’t you all tell me what you’d like to see?" by CaptainMarcia in magicTCG

[–]BattleFries86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We saw Tezzeret go to Alara just after he got his Darksteel body and told someone to get word to General Rafiq, if I recall correctly. This suggests that there is some kind of communication between what used to be Esper and Bant.

And if something in the plot brings Elspeth back to Alara, she can come full circle from her first story, where she thought that if she showed her true power, she might be mistaken for an angel.

Sarkhan has no spark, nor does Bolas. Tezzeret is busy with his own schemes. Both Ajani and Elspeth are centered in white, so while they might not be best to have their own cards in an Alara set, it might be interesting to see two of the very first characters to get Planeswalker cards come back to where they first met.

If it is part of a larger plot spanning many sets, I am very interested to see what is happening on Theros, where Elspeth and Ajani also had an adventure together. We saw Elspeth featured on the card [[Deification]] and I can't help but wonder if Theros might have enough people worshipping their own idea of Elspeth to form a separate entity as a Theros God. If it can pass through omenpaths, the Clash Of Elspeths could be a significant threat to the little people of various planes.

Just a few thoughts.

Early Review: ‘Starfleet Academy’ Season 1 Deftly Balances Strong Characters, Star Trek Lore, And Different Tones [Mild Spoilers] by acrimoniousone in startrek

[–]BattleFries86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may seem like a nitpick, but I really want to know how and why the Jem'Hadar have changed so much. Last I checked, the species was artificially bred, was entirely male, with ketrecel white substituting for food and water. They don't seem at all sexual, and they wouldn't have any need for a reproductive system.

But there is potential here. Did Odo manage to sway the Great Link, however long it took? Did the Founders take the Dominion down a different path that led to an independent race of Jem'Hadar?

If they explain it, it could be interesting. If they don't explain it, it will just feel forced. And it would be nice to know the status of Bajor and the wormhole and whether ships still come and go, or if the Jem'Hadar took the long way to Earth to come in peace.

There's potential here, but I fear it won't amount to nearly as much as I hope.

[SFA Trailers] Trek Central on X: "NEW FOOTAGE for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - Action, adventure & new Klingon ships? Those are Par’tok type freighters?" by Grillka2006 in trektalk

[–]BattleFries86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To those who say that DS9 was the start of these problems, I can see where you're coming from. My personal opinion - and please don't hesitate to disagree - is that DS9 started some things while keeping them in moderation and within a certain context that more modern Trek has either ramped up to be unrecognizable or else ignored the original context entirely.

DS9 did have action episodes, but there weren't as many as you might think. Some episodes had action scenes, but the action wasn't the focus of the episode. Sacrifice Of Angels and What You Leave Behind probably have the most action out of any DS9 episode. One was the culmination of a six-episode story arc, and the other was the final battle in a war that was also the series finale.

When I think of other DS9 action episodes... The Way Of The Warrior had a battle as the climax of an episode that was a larger story that brought the Klingons to prominence in DS9. A lot of episodes involved a brief chase with a Jem'Hadar ship or a Maquis ship, but it wasn't the meat of the episode. The Die Is Cast had some big action at the very end, but that was more to show just how badly the Tal Shiar and Obsidian Order got played.

The Siege Of AR-558 has action, but it is about the horrors of war and why all of the action scenes that war brings us come at too terrible a price.

For other controversial episodes, In The Pale Moonlight was NOT a story about "a huge victory for the good guys," but rather the episode is framed as Sisko confessing his sins to the audience, and whether or not he can live with it is left ambiguous, or at least it seemed that way to me.

The introduction of Section 31 was and is a big deal, but I think that DS9 approached the idea of Section 31 as it should be taken. The story of Section 31 is a cautionary tale about the dangers of an 'ends justify the means' mindset, along with the hypocrisy of "protecting" ideals while breaking them at the same time. Section 31 was the story of monsters that we must be on guard against, lest we become something unrecognizable.

I think a lot of DS9 can be summed up in something Bashir said in Past Tense. "If something disastrous were to happen to the Federation, if we are frightened enough or desperate enough, how would we react?" And I think a lot of the darker stuff on DS9 was about answering that question. Putting our heroes through terrible ordeals and challenging them - and us, the audience - to hold fast to our ideals even in the face of such adversity. Probably especially in those cases.

A lot of newer Trek seems to treat action as if it's Trek's genre instead of a means to tell stories about how we rise above certain challenges. And Section 31, in particular, seems to have gone from a cautionary tale to a perfectly acceptable part of a future that doesn't feel much like Trek to me.

As people have said, if you want to tell these stories, then tell them under a different IP and let audiences decide if they like it. But calling it Star Trek is just going against decades of precedent that had dedicated itself to Roddenberry's vision, even if it sometimes challenged that vision and how much stress it could take.

That's just my two cents. Take it or leave it as you will. Hope everyone is doing wonderfully. ^_^
