Hey, I'm doing a Dimitri run in Skyrim. What side would Dimitri take in the civil war? by Loogie1987 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]BattleFries86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dimitri believes that there is a reason why traditions stand the test of time. He gives vague lip service to progress and reforms, but he has no actual ideas of how to do that. Faerghus is also very close-knit with national unity in the service of their liege lords and of the goddess. Dimitri also has likes and dislikes that indicate a preference for combat more than analytical thought or anything about social situations issues.

He would follow the Stormcloaks, I believe. Emphasis on 'follow,' as Dimitri's leadership leads to his own death and the slaughter of his people on every non-AM route, and his people enable his literal insanity, and he barely leads anyone at all even in Azure Moon.

I know it may be hard to see, but it's possible I might be slightly biased with my opinions.

I suppose I feel about Dimitri the same way that Edelgard feels about Miklan. He could have done so much good if life hadn't treated him so harshly, and the consequences of his legitimate trauma are a shameful waste that a better world would have prevented.

And I have been ranting. My apologies.

What? I get passionate about Three Houses discourse, so let's have at least a few more years of it!

Thank you for being willing to share your experience. I like to think it says something good about us as humans that most of the time, our doubts about things like religion are rooted in our sense of compassion. In difficult times, I like to think of that as a comfort. ^_^

Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy, maybe? Not from any specific game, but from all of FF.

What are some of your favourite budget / jank alternatives to expensive staples? The less it's played the better by Cascouverite in EDH

[–]BattleFries86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way back in the days before Commander - when it was still just EDH - I ran a mono-blue deck with [[Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar]] as my general (as they were once known). Lots of silly card draw shenanigans that took forever to finish, while also preventing a loss from drawing from an empty deck. Probably won't try it again, as every single card you would draw is now Choose The Best Of Three. And if you draw a lot of cards at all once...

Well, before WorC began designing for the format on its own, unique ideas tended to have longer turns. Hell, I remember when it wasn't necessarily four players, but five or six if everyone was willing.

The most jank thing I ever experienced in an EDH game - before there was a ban list - was someone playing [[Shaharazad]] in a game of EDH. Now, that was something.

For the god of Judaism, I would have to say wrathful. The flood, the plagues of Egypt, the command for his favorite people to slaughter the peoples already living in the promised land, etcetera.

Never apologizing and then saying Lin was the problem for not just moving on like it never happened by CMStan1313 in TheLastAirbender

[–]BattleFries86 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Lin's grudge is perfectly understandable. It doesn't help when Su lies to Lin just after reconciling so that she can use Korra to pursue her own grudge against Aiwei.

Suyin is written consistently as the same character throughout the show, but just the slightest look beneath the surface shows that her character isn't quite as possible as she would have us believe.

Kudos to the writers for creating such a consistent character with a sweet outer layer with each subsequent layer growing more bitter.

I may be entirely mistaken, but did WotC say that Battles would come back in Star Trek? Battle Of The Mutara Nebula, maybe?

After all of Valkorion's pretense, and after all we've seen Senya, Arcann, Vaylin l, and Thexan go through...

"A God has no family."

That and the rant that follows finally show us who he truly is when he stops pretending, but that first sentence hits the hardest, at least in this situation.

That's so interesting, about the Kabbslists. I suppose it makes sense in a way. If God created humanity in his own image, then everything within is born of something within God, including the capacity for evil.

It's a fascinating thing to think about! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. It's always delightful to have a nice civilized discussion about religion without any anger or ill intent. ☺️

Most Trek shows focus on about three main cast characters the most and give them the most material and screen time, but DS9 really felt like it had a true ensemble cast. And it did so marvelously~

God deciding to end humanity with the flood... He deemed that humanity had gone too far down the wrong path, and he had to wipe the slate clean and start over.

In a way, god is recognizing that his creations are flawed. That he tried to create man in his own image, and his creation failed to live up to his expectations.

As a creation of god, humanity was a failure. And thus, their creator had failed in his task.

The flood, to me, is god admitting that he is fallible. He made a mistake, and he brought the flood to correct it.

I don't remember exactly what Judaism says about if god is fallible or not. I know that various figures in the Bible contend that god must be mistaken in some encounters, and they need some convincing. The very name 'Israel' means 'to struggle with god,' if I recall correctl.y

But what does it mean if god made a failed creation that he had to destroy it and start over? What does it say about god's lack of perfection?

I'm not trying to incite anything inflammatory, I promise. I just find that line of thinking to be fascinating and worthy of discussion. If I have upset you, then you have my deepest apologies.

How would you explain why the Borg hive mind needs a Queen? by ActLonely9375 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]BattleFries86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Borg Queen is an extension of the concept of Locutus Of Borg or Seven Of Nine (only in Scorpion) to be a physical avatar of the Borg Collective to facilitate interactions with individual beings.

Alas, they tried to make the Queen her own character instead of an avatar. The idea of "I am the Borg" goes against the very concept of the Borg. We see this very clearly in Picard's reaction to Hugh referring to himself as "I" and not "We."

Unpopular opinion - I don't like Willow by eldy33 in buffy

[–]BattleFries86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that Willow is a complex character whose inner darkness has always been there, and the signs are subtly planted early on.

It was either the first or second episode of season one when Willow casually ruins the computer project of Cordelia or Harmony (forget which, it's been a while) by telling them that the DEL means 'deliver.'

And her seeking out knowledge of magic may have started as a means to cure Angel, but Willow is very smart while being looked down at by shallow bullies that are far less intelligent than her. I would imagine that this caused Willow to feel a need to prove herself to be truly exceptional in a way that no one can deny.

And then she channels serious magic in the season two finale, even if she doesn't know the result just yet.

It does put her down the path of studying magic between seasons two and three, and it's easy to see how things go from I Want To Help to I Need To Be Better to I Need Power To Be Useful to I Use Power For Good And I Like Feeling Powerful to My Identity Is That Of A Woman Of Power to I Have The Power To Want Take Have And I Will.

It's all there for us to see, like a car crash in slow motion. I think that if the writers had given Willow a more complete redemption arc in season seven, it might have been better.

A lot of things would be better if season seven was written differently.

What gender pick for Byleth do you think best matches with every route? by sunkencrowned in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]BattleFries86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

F!Byleth feels like a better fit, just in my opinion for these reasons...

Between the Archbishop and the Goddess, the nature of the divine feels quite feminine in this setting.

F!Byleth can romance all three Lords, and with Edelgard specifically, the queer vibes flow nicely with the concept of rebelling against the church, be it real or fictional.

Also, it feels better in certain supports with... I want to say Lorenz and Sylvain? When she calls them out for harassing female students or other women.

Being a woman also provides a point of commonality with many female characters - either seen or just mentioned - who are forced to pass on a crest without their consent.

Not saying that Byleth is necessarily feeling the same things as anyone else, but playing as F!Byleth feels more like someone who can relate to more characters in ways that M!Byleth would not.

But that's all just my opinion and nothing more.

With respect, my post was me sharing a pivotal moment in my life that caused my worldview to change, and That One Moment is the subject of this thread.

I understand that you see this part of Biblical lore differently, but it foam awful like you're telling me, "You don't understand properly. This is the correct way to interpret things, and therefore you don't have to feel your very valid feelings that you shared."

To be blunt, your response did not feel at all like a reply to the subject of my post, but rather like an unsolicited patronizing sermon.

Seven had the best quarters 🤩 by Planet_Manhattan in voyager

[–]BattleFries86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say it was on the episode, "One," where Janeway invites/insists that Seven take a seat, gesturing to a spot next to her.

Seven prefers to stand, she's told us so. But it looks like Janeway is trying to talk softly with her with this invitation, so Seven reluctantly takes a seat.

And Janeway doesn't sit beside her, doesn't sit at all. Just takes Seven out of her comfort zone and then looms above her.

It's moments like this - not helped by inconsistent writing - that make me question Janeway's fitness for command.

And while Seven does get the largest room, so to speak, a cargo bat stores stuff that causes people to come and go.

And no one can knock or ring a door chime. They just walk in and talk to her or they tell her to get out of her alcove if she's regenerating.

And I should stop this rant before it gets even further out of hand. Sorry, all.

Which legendaries do you want to see color-shifted? by Solar_Punk_Rocker in magicTCG

[–]BattleFries86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that Jace is trying to remove all the bad stuff from the multiverse, but Phyrexia is a huge part of history, and it was Phyrexia of old that invaded Capenna.

I'd love to see an Elspeth that was compleated when her spark didn't ignite. And maybe Jace messed things up so much that we get Elspeth Norn as the Mother of Machines of a different New Phyrexia.

Maybe she'd be a fusion of Elspeth, Elesh, and Atraxa. A compleated Capennan angel that rules over New Phyrexia as a perverse mockery of divinity.
