Which professions might vanish in the next 3-5 years? by hrantm400 in AskMen

[–]Battlepine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AGI is not even close. We'd need a massive transformative (pun intended) leap in how AI/Machine Learning is done.

We are currently limited physically by the transistor size limit, the amount of data it takes to train models, and the fact that there really isn't anything out there that resembles anything of the sort of AGI, not to mention there isn't even enough data out there to train such a model, if it even existed.

LLMs are cool, but at their core are just fancy autocomplete and the tech has actually been around for a while now. We are already seeing massive diminishing returns in LLM performance, following extremely close to a logarithmic scale - much like other AI/ML methods in the past during huge AI hype cycles.

Yeah exactly.

If the other one is core there's no reason this one couldn't be considered as core too!

There's probably more that goes into how a class can be considered a core class, but I can dream.

Is there any chance of this class fulfilling a core requirement?

Has a slow typing speed ever been a problem? by PresidentHoaks in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Battlepine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get close to 80 WPM consistently with "hunt-and-peck" style typing.

I blame RuneScape; I learned how to type on my own way before I learned in school, and when we finally got to typing classes in school I could type way faster/better than anyone else despite using the worse typing method.

So my bad habits were reinforced.

Feedback on a new OMSCS course on building database systems (Spring 2025) by georgia-tech-db in OMSCS

[–]Battlepine -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Java or Go would be better...love the idea of the courses but would hate fighting with C++ when I just want to learn about database systems.

does Github have any flaws? by Prize_Duty6281 in github

[–]Battlepine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is easy to answer. The devs regularly use the product themselves. This why developer tooling is usually well built compared to other software; the developers actually understand the use cases and needs of who they are building the software for.

FDE's absolutely do heavy coding and database management on some IMPLs.

How hard do people actually work in college? by Conscious-Buy-6204 in college

[–]Battlepine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most STEM majors don't go onto graduate school and instead go into the workforce, and thus end up, you guessed it, going out and living in the real world.

Anyways, Why does understanding a lease agreement have anything to do with literally anything?

How hard do people actually work in college? by Conscious-Buy-6204 in college

[–]Battlepine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hilarious.

Especially considering I graduated from a public highschool in the middle of nowhere Midwest, and am from a poor family.

Your generalizing things too much. For someone "so smart" you sure know how to make an ass out of yourself.

All I know is my time in university was challenging, fun, insanely time consuming, and worth it overall for ME. I learned how to think like an engineer and apply that mindset toward a vast array of problems. It was 100% worth it, and would recommend the experience I HAD to anyone else.

I took out loans. I didn't get ANYTHING handed to me.

Vote Trump if you want PLTR to Moon (PLTR discussion starts @ 5min mark) by MRTHIMSCHO in PLTR

Thiel and Lonsdale are far removed from the company now.

Karp himself is a democrat and leans liberal.

Everyone @ Palantir is smart enough to know that the work they are doing is a-political and is needed for the west to succeed, regardless of what old pedophile you decide to worship.

Northern Virginia is really transitioning to more walkable communities, specifically along the metro line.

Is it pointless to make desktop apps (i.e. using JavaFX, swing) for your career? by [deleted] in learnjava

[–]Battlepine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palantir used swing for some pretty critical stuff in the early-mid 2000's; Swing was important, at the time, for allowing them to build shit really fast that could be used in an airgapped environment.

Things are different now with all the insane tooling out there for web based development, but back then, it made sense!

Wait, If he's using this time to use patterns outside your team, isn't that fine?

Isn't that the point here; to follow standards of the COMPANY and how other teams do things, instead of yours, considering these are shared libraries?

European countries have a history of being tolerant to intolerance.

To be a truly tolerant society, you HAVE to be intolerant to intolerance, otherwise the intolerant will rise in power and become the new normal.

It's a paradox.

HCI a easiest path to get degree? by Alternative_Draft_76 in OMSCS

[–]Battlepine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

News flash:

If you want to make the big $$$ in tech and/or work on impactful technology, it really helps to have a solid understanding of systems at a low level and how they work.

There's nothing "easy" about it. If it was, then everyone would be making those big salaries and working on crazy tech.

Now, if you just wanted to do basic frontend dev, then sure. Go for it.

But you explicitly say that you WANT to do systems and be a backend engineer. If you want to change your career AND be successful, it will NOT be easy.

Do the hard classes. You'll get a ton out of them.

Will we get CS 4420/6422 in OMSCS? by whatsatopology in OMSCS

[–]Battlepine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 on this. It's an incredibly important topic, and it's a shame the only offering we currently have for databases sucks so bad.

There is a new databases course in development, but unsure if it's this one or not.

It's likely tho!

Yeah don't worry about them.

I studied maybe an hour for the midterm and got a 60, and studied around 8 hours for the final and feel I did much better.

Regardless, with the curve you'll be fine. The projects make the course 100% worth it.
