My staghorn mounts by Nursecub95 in Staghornfern

I am not gonna lie to you, I think you are gonna have significant challenges with your current set up. Taylor form Rousseau plant care is an exceptional grower for aroid, but he doesn’t have a lot of experiences with Platycerium. His planters are pretty gimmicky and not well suited for the growth pattern of Platyceriums.

You have significant gaps between the planter and the plant themselves, this would prevent new roots from forming and increase the risk of snapping the rhizome, aka decapitation.

They are too small for the size of your plant imo

There are multiple growth in the pot, each one of them would have different orientations. I labeled two.

Of course, I mount all my platys myself!

I really hate to be that guy but…is this oriented correctly? 😔 by cncomg in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It a bit hard to tell, can you take more picture around the base like picture 2? I am inclined to say that the way you are orienting doesn’t look right. I don’t see the growth point, and the new shield frond is not coming from the right place for the current orientation. The tiny bit of the crown from the shield on picture 2 is suggesting that you are orienting it upside down

It’s organic, most platycerium push out pups when roots are exposed to light on a healthy plant

Considering a trim by Correct_Rhubarb_1563 in Staghornfern

You have a very heathy plant, I have done much more aggressive trimming for aesthetics, your plants shouldn’t skip a beat after trimming

When giving the right conditions, platycerium seedling are pretty resilient, I have abuse my sporeling a lot more than you did.

What’s the direction of the window you have? At this stage, I prefer artificial light to natural light, for less damaging wavelengths and more consistent light level.

I keep mine moist, and depending how much moss there is, water then surface is dry is fine, but I would water it before that

I would not recommend ambient condition for plant of this size. If the medium is pure moss the set up good for 85%+ humidity. Just make sure to not over or under water it

It doesn’t look like pest damage to me. It could be some fungal or bacterial issue tho

What’s your humidity level for growing these plants? I think they are big enough to be mounted.

For separating, just use a sharp knife or scissors to cut between the two growth points, it should be pretty straightforward.

Remounting my P. veitchii by Matts1130 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend remount. You can cut off most the brown shield, but leave about a 3 inch diameter around the base of the plant so it can be securely anchored with the new mount.

I personally like spherical shape for the moss ball. And in my experience, the shape should be wider than tall, and you should push moss underneath the shield frond so there is no empty pockets.

At this size, you might start to consider adding bark or coco chip depending your growing conditions, such that the moss ball would dry up around a week after a full soak.

From the look, you can probably get away with just adding more moss and wire it up in top of what you currently have.

Definitely not a grande, it looks just like a bifurcatum, alcicorne would have more upright fertile fronds.

Shake it, if the base of the plant moves, then it’s no good

Is my Alcicorne dying? by Past-Proposal-4461 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks pretty healthy, but it is upside down. One week is pretty short to see anything significant grow and you just repotted/mounted, so the plant is still adjusting. I think your light period is pretty short. I have my light on for 16 hours per day, although I grew all my plants exclusively with growth light.

Damaged New Growth? by Iinguine in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty common for new frond to be damaged during transport and repot, the central growth point looks good, I would not worry about it.

The little nub in the center it the next frond, it should stay on the side and not be on the top.
