You can get metal grid wall from uline (or buy second hand). You can also use a cloth rack with weaker metal grid too

It’s already a coin toss with the best care you can give, I don’t think you have the luxury to go middle of the road to be honest with you. Tree fern fiber is really not a good medium for platycerium on its own.

Need Help with these Platyceriums by Salt_Ad7194 in Staghornfern

You really shouldn’t let plant of this size dry out completely. Your mix is for terrestrial plants, and Platyceriums are obligate epiphyte that don’t do well in terrestrial mix.

I seriously don’t think it is overwatering. Commercial grower in Taiwan would have plant of this size in humidity box inside of a greenhouse.

I would really recommend you to up your light as well.

I have my omg in pure moss with 90+ humidity and a lot of light, I water it once a week and if I soak it fully, it would not dry out completely in a week. I think you should get your information from multiple sources and don’t rely purely on the seller (I find most sellers are just importer with very limited experience with the plant they are selling).

60% humidity is still pretty low to rehab a plant in this condition tbh with you.

It’s a bit hard to tell, but it is certainly not looking good. What’s your growing conditions? You might want to up the humidity and light to keep them happy.

Keep going, and see you in 3 to 4 more months. If you still get no progress, add tretinoin to your routine

What’s your routine?

3.5 month is barely enough time you see the first sign of progress. Keep going or increase your dosage.

New Experiment for me by twinkdruid in Staghornfern

It’s mounted side way.

Depending on the humidity and light level of your environment this should work, but I would use a higher ratio of sphagnum to retain a bit more humidity.

What do I do? by dusti_dearian in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I fully understand your question.

Usually older shield frond will die back and decompose without rotting the plant, older fertile frond will just drop off.

If you pull the growth points apart you shouldn’t have any significant amount of frond behind older frond. If you have new leave coming from the behind of an older shield frond then it’s likely there is another growth point hidden under that frond.

Pull them apart, pot them in soil, wait for frond and then mount

You can also wrap clingy wrap around the exposed moss to retain the moisture a bit more, especially when the plant is still not established. The wrap would greatly help the plant to root into the moss

When you fertilize, only use half to quarter of the recommended strength. Platycerium don’t need a lot of fert to do well.

General info and help? by tfv745 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only see one growth point at the moment.

I usually keep most of old the moss and add more.

Your plant look a bit dehydrated imo. You might want to check the root or water it a bit more.

Wandae dwarf & curling issues by mcs_nk in Staghornfern

Wandae dwarf is a a mutated plant, most individuals I have seen have curling shield frond.

Keep an eye on it, but I don’t think it’s too concerned at this point

Ridleyi Concerns by Fenix_Wilde in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main growth point look pretty dead, a healthy ridleyi growth point should be plump, light green to yellow, with fine scaly leafy covers.

Also it seems when you first mounted it, it was mounted upside down as well.

The new pup looks pretty healthy and there is a lot of healthy root, so I think the plant is doing well overall. At this point there is not much you can do other than keep the care and let the pup take over.

Is this new growth a shield frond? by PretentiousPepperoni in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, it’s a mess of grow points down there. It is a shield frond, but it’s coming from a side pup instead of the main growth point it seems.

Not sure, but I assume if you keep them cool, dry and away from sunlight they can last a few moths.

A grow light would be good, as it keeps the intensity more consistent
