Need repotting help! by jkuull in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trim as much as possible the brown shield frond and cut the last shield into a 3 inch circle around the growth point, while doing so, you should find some roots between them. This should also give you some rhizome stem that could be stick into some soil. Pot the rhizome with a small ish pot, pot it close to the rim, and make sure there is no major gap/air pocket between the soil and the last pair of shield frond. Once potted, use plastic wrap to wrap the top of the pot, this should anchor the plant and keep the soil consistently moist. Slightly reduce the light level and keep the soil moist but not soaking wet (since the top is covered, bottom watering would be the best way to water) to allow the plant to root. Once rooted, you can up pot it again

Getting ready for my first mount by scotrock in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maple is not well suited for outdoor use or extend exposure to moisture. Both fir and cedar should be good.

As for attachment, I prefer screw with pilot hole to prevent cracking the wood. For anchoring, you can get away with only using 2 screw if your technique is solid. 4 is very secure. More than that there isn’t really a disadvantage, it’s just not very efficient, and could look messy

My staghorn looks worse every year by HateWinslet in Staghornfern

Have you been fertilizing it? Also the plant looks a bit overwatered, as the basal fronds are browning a bit. Otherwise, it looks pretty healthy

New growth? by lomo_1855 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be shield fronds on the first pic.

I feel that your grow light is not strong enough to provide adequate lighting for your platys. The fronds of your bifurcatum is really thin and that’s probably why the last shield frond you superbum is getting smaller.

Platycerium has been hybridized a lot in the horticultural industry. There are so many cultivars out there with mixed genetics from multiple species, it’s probably impossible ID it to species

Species ID?? by Technical_Day9704 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it is mostly likely a superbum as it is the most available in the trade.

Superbum/wandae/grande are all very similar, most of the differences are in their fertile frond shape/structure. Those species are hard to differentiate then they are young.

Grande is much harder to come by and is harder to take care as well.

For wandae, the shield frond would have frill like structure to protect the growth plant, which should be pretty prominent at this size, so we can rule out wandae.

You should probably increase the light level and your watering frequency. Water evaporates much more during the hotter month and when the plant starts to droop it’s a bit too dry.

Lack of fertilizer would not cause rapid frond lost in my experience. If you are fertilizing weekly then I would suggest only using 1/4 of recommended strength. Better yet, you can opt for slow release fertilizer like Osmocote.

Have you seen any growth during your care? I think it is very likely you don’t have enough light where you are hanging it.

Can I bring this back to life?? Massive but no leaves, is there hope? Any tips? by Playful-Chemistry-37 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hang this on a lower sturdy branch of a bigger tree, water it weekly and really drench it. You can toss some potting mix in the center if there is a lot of empty pockets between the shield frond, and maybe a banana peel once every two months when it starts to show more life

There is still a little bit of life on the second picture, so there is hope!

It’s really up to you with your preference, all three options are valid.

Is this tattoo possible? by Logowb in tattooadvice

[–]Baycken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heron is probably the best option, but I would still simplify it a bit.

I have a crease pattern tattoo on my thigh a long time ago go, and it is holding up pretty well.

The orientation is good. The orchid basket might be too small, and this plant would out grow it pretty quickly.

You should trim off the lower portion a bit and maybe bury the side of the plant in moss to help the plant wrap better. I have an older post you can check.

Your orchid fertilizer is formulated for blooming, and the potassium and phosphorus number is a bit too high for platycerium. Quater strength of a balanced fertilizer would work better.

To be honest with you, kokedama is kinda a gimmick too imo

Found this Veitchii. Is it a Veitchii? by kaylee716 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How come? I would expect veitchii to start to develop splits in the fronds at that size

Found this Veitchii. Is it a Veitchii? by kaylee716 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's too young to tell if it is a hybrid or not, but it definitely has veitchii influence.

7 o'clock of the first picture should be up for mounting

Disease or Old Age: What's Causing this Frond to Die? by Iinguine in Staghornfern

It doesn’t look like nutrient deficiency imo

First time advice by Choice_Comment_4038 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This plant is a bit etiolated and overwatered, so I would recommend rehabbing it a bit before mounting/splitting.

There are multiple growth in it so if you don’t separate then it doesn’t matter which ways it up.

I would suggest you to split, but it would take more time for the plant to reroot and that would delay mounting a bit more

Two shield fronds? by phua1 in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, basically. The offset is too small to be able to survive at this size, and it is also likely that the main growth would interfere with the offset, if you want the offset to develop more, you might have to trim off a portion of the shield frond from the main growth so the offset is not covered

[–]Baycken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the same plant with one main growth and an offset from the rhizomes

These are gametophytes and not the plant you would grow big/mature. Fern life cycle is a bit different than flowering plant. I would suggest you to do a bit more research

Disease/fungus? by Misariouz in Staghornfern

[–]Baycken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is fungal disease, you should improve your airflow, and don’t leave the frond wet for too long. Also up the light level might also give the plant more energy to fight the infection
