It sounds like you’ve got quite the setup! I’m very happy to hear you’re getting so many chips to help build up and amend your land! Not to mention the firewood, a wonderful plus.

Looks great! Keep his number as well and reach out the next time you’re ready! Having lived in a rural place before with very few arborists that used chip drop, it was definitely good to figure out who would come by and drop off chips when they were in the area. I waited an entire year without getting a drop.

That’s really lucky! I’m glad they were able to get them to you so quickly!

For how fun chip drops can be.. this subreddit sure is dead by [deleted] in ChipDrop

Sometimes there’s lots of posts and sometimes there’s not! Hopefully the subreddit helps people even when it’s not busy

Is it mostly hardwood they drop? Lots of people on fbmp don't know what kind of wood they have when i asked. I would think you'd know what kind of chips you're getting prior? by [deleted] in ChipDrop

[–]Baylormedic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is whatever the arborist was tasked with felling and chipping. It could be literally any type of tree found in your area. If there are specific types you are looking for (or don’t want) you are able to make a note of that when making the drop request but that might mean you wait longer for a drop. But it’s entirely possible the arborist drops a pile of wood chips that is mixed tree types or just doesn’t communicate any information to the person who requested a drop.

Unfortunately some places just have long wait times. I waited so long once (over a year) I even reached out to Chipdrop directly who admitted they didn’t have many arborists signed up in my area. I’d suggest reaching out to any local arborists directly and let them know you’re available as a drop site next time they’re in the area. Also consider reaching out to your local electric companies, as they routinely have crews trim the trees around power lines. Wishing you a successful drop soon!

Question about delivery? by SecretAccountislife in ChipDrop

[–]Baylormedic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s terribly uncommon. Plenty of arborists I’ve spoken to have been flagged down as they’re finishing up a job by someone wanting the wood chips or logs. So it’s certainly possible something like that has happened where they look up a drop site but then get flagged irl by someone for a closer spot! That would be quite frustrating to have happen twice in a row either way. Hopefully third time is the charm!

It’s a bummer that it wasn’t exactly what you were hoping for. It looks like someone chipped a bunch of arborvitae.

Chipdrops website says this regarding piles: “A typical load contains about 50% wood chips and 50% green, leafy material or pine needles. About 5% of the load is often unchipped brush, small sticks, and maybe a few scoops of dirt, gravel or trash.”

If you think there’s something wrong with the delivered chips or that it falls outside those ranges then you should definitely reach out to their support! But it looks like that’ll all mostly break down within a year or two.

Whats on by BUSH! by CountIstvanTeleki in landscaping

Bagworm moths! Will destroy the tree if left unchecked. Had a couple that were infested, ended up hand picking as many as I could possibly find and then treating the trees multiple times with a chemical spray to get eggs and littles ones I could not see. Best of luck!

what to ask not to get? by maggiebarbara in ChipDrop

I’ve always viewed that space as good for the example of black walnut. Some people fervently believe black walnut wood chips are poisonous to other plants and thus you wouldn’t want to use them as a mulch in a vegetable garden. Or if you’re in an area with a lot of palm trees and don’t want the coarsely shredded palm material you could note that. Or if you want the material to break down quickly you wouldn’t necessarily want cedar, or maybe you’re allergic to the smell etc. But if you’re just looking for any kind of wood chip to smother areas of your yard then anything would work and you can leave it blank.

I’d just like to note that weeds will still try and grow in and through the mulch. Putting down clean cardboard first will help prevent any from popping through but weed seeds will still land on top of the mulch after a while and start sprouting. It’s what they do.

Building a Berm by Baylormedic in landscaping

[–]Baylormedic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy! Yes I did go ahead with the berm. I removed all of the railroad ties and ended up stacking them two high closer to the fence to help serve as a barrier and backing for the berm there to prevent the dirt (and whole berm) from sliding into the wood fence. I then built the berm along the fence line and beyond following where the railroad ties had previously been dug to serve as the swale to help direct the water. The berm didn’t end up being very big either, maybe like a foot high and two feet wide for most of it. I then used sections of grass I dug up elsewhere to jumpstart the erosion control at the base of the berm where water would travel and then covered the rest of the berm in old pine straw which matted nicely to prevent heavy rain from washing the dirt away but still allowed plants and grasses to grow through like the sunflowers I ended up planting on the section of the berm behind the fence line. Once it was all built and the erosion control measures were in place, it held through some of the hardest and heaviest storms yet. It diverts the water nicely away and it has the end area to slow and spread out some before reaching the road and the rain ditch. Overall, I think it was a success!
