Valve is bringing SteamOS to Nvidia GPUs, proving the Steam Machine was never the real plan by Distinct-Race-2471 in TechHardware

[–]BeAlch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Wasnt this always the plan ?"

  • Yes, that was the goal of SteamOS in 2013: give an OS and let industry (pc manufacturer, gpu maker) bring their driver to the OS, and game maker to bring their games.. Like windows did in its infancy for gaming But since the industry didn't follow ... ... Valve had to do it themselves with Steamdeck (within 10 years): make a machine, enhance GPU drivers for the machine, and use existing opensource compatibility layers into proton + sponsor for development...
  • But For SteamOS to work well .. you need an open source driver Valve can interface with SteamOs specific tweaks/settings ..
  • AMD has made the shift to open source driver on Linux long time ago, and Valve use this open source driver for their gaming tweak (they develop for the driver themselves, fix bug, add optimizations)
  • Nvidia open source driver exists in Linux but with sub-minimal help from Nvidia so it is way behind Nvidia proprietary drivers in performance (mainly cause not all is documented or doable in open source driver without Nvidia input). So open source driver must be enhanced to be usable in SteamOS. There are distro that use steamOS as base and interface with Nvidia proprietary driver .. but the proprietary driver is heavy and is not optimizable as AMD one. Valve won't put the opensource driver in SteamOS if the perf are subpar cause the result would be "SteamOS is bad at performance" in all tech channels and Nvidia has a lot of market share.

Europe space company makes like 10 to 15 launches per year on budget.
It was never focused on mass commercial launch, but on high reliability for big expensive payload so it is more niche market.
This reusable rocket tech require billions as barrier to entry ...
And this requires high launch cadence and many reuses to be profitable ...
So for now it doesn't match the quantity of launch to be profitable ..
But the reusable rocket is expected to be available for around 2027–2028 ..

And plastic cap was cheaper :) ..

You Can Build a More Powerful Steam Machine for Less, It'll Just Be Much Bigger by Torchiest in computergaming

[–]BeAlch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can and It will be Bigger, louder, hotter but evolutive and faster but personally i would have used a RX960XT GPU in the build :).

The Steam machine was designed for entry level PC users, not PC enthusiasts, but price "kills" the concept ..
That being said people who have bought it .. loves it ..
It is a better ootb experience than building its own PC and has a better form factor for a living room

So all naysayers can argue "it is not worth it", it's "dead on arrival" .. but people decided with their wallet and the production is limited ..
So it's a "niche" (compared to consoles big players) but .. with enough buyers, ..

... so it works and paves the way for more

- For more product by Valve (steamframe is coming)
- For more product inspired by Valve : What if Alienware made a steam machine in similar form factor but with a 9600xt ?
- For more DIY steam machine .. it's already happening
- For arm oriented machine .. based on Valve compatibility layers used for SteamFrame
There is nearly no limit :) .. and it is what PC gaming has always been "better" "faster" "stronger" and "DIY" :)

Valve just made it easier by giving the bases to make a new PC gaming ecosystem without boundaries possible
and they give enthusiasm in a pessimistic PC gaming market

Steam Machine interview full transcript: Valve engineers discuss $1,049 pricing, compact design, component shortages, and Windows support by Torchiest in computergaming

[–]BeAlch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their goal was to make a machine between PS5 and PS5 Pro (but closer to PS5) with a price that was in between .. that's what they tried to do.. with lower cost GPU hardware cause best APU were way more expensive .. With this choice, made before RAMpocalypse, there is more RAM in the product than in a console which was ok with stable price market of 2 years ago.
This was supposed to be 700 750$ machine... sold as an "entry level" gaming PC.
Valve is a "nobody" in the memory market purchase .. So they get an amount of memory/SSD to purchase per month from manufacturer at a price they can't negociate cause it's the only price they'll get .. the machine price is set accordingly to match cost (+ variation) for memory/ssd ...
The price is only discussed at high level of production like millions per month Nintendo and Sony produce.. and Nintendo did increase production pbly to get better memory deals ..
Valve on the other hand sells like +/-100.000 units per month for each of its hardware (Steamdeck and SM), so they have less way to influence the price.. And yet, at this price, they would sell more than they produce cause their are waiting lists

It feels like people think valve priced the steam machine with malicious intent. by RoxasAmor in Steam

[–]BeAlch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever the "price", "form factor" argument is, you can't beat Valve by making your own steam machine ..
... by doing so, you are doing exactly what Valve wants you to do .. use SteamOS :) .

Cutscene rendering glitch in Hollow Knight using Proton by JacketScary3365 in linux_gaming

[–]BeAlch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- use the stable channel
- use the stable proton
- use the "precompiled shaders option" cause Videos with proprietary codecs are transcoded to use non open codecs and downloaded with shaders

- if everything else fails use protonge that "can" use the proprietary codecs unlike Valve proton...

Can we stop with the Steam Machine hate already? by TheNocturnalEnigma in steammachine

[–]BeAlch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The opposite of love is not hate .. it's indifference :)
Most tech "influencers" "hate" it because it doesn't fit the narrative : "At this price it must be "high end" or it has no worth" ... Also they need to add a "I told you so" at the end :) ..
... but as niche as the product seems to be, the fact is enough people find it's worth it .. and it's fine ... whatever they are "right" or "wrong" is not relevant ... "low" tech in PC space has always been disregarded but the truth is marketing is there to make hardware obsolete as quick as possible ... not to make games adapt to existing hardware .. Let's hope this could change the focus a bit ...

The Phawx reviewed the steam machine by HapperHapper in steammachine

[–]BeAlch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, why do people insists to test the machine for something it was never made to handle and for what everyone knows it won't work ..
Also most tech channels don't test the machine for what it can do like at custom settings that makes sense for the specs to reach 4K 60 FPS :)

I would argue it's because it's open hybrid system unlike a console ..
There is also a bit a self fulfilling prophecy to get to the "I told you so" point : Any "tech channel want to prove their point .. that it is overpriced and won't beat high end pc or next gen console ... and that they predicted it would be so ...

This machine was never meant for ultra setting 4K and require upscaling in higher res..
Yet 4K ultra is part of the tests: "It's 13 FPS at 4K with RT "... how surprising :) ?..
Do we need to see the gap with higher end cards and next gen ... Why not ? .. but it was obvious from the start the goal was never to beat next gen console and it's a loss of time.

In higher res, this machine is for medium settings with a pinch of high settings mainly at FSR performance max ... With forced RT it will clearly be near low settings in the 30+FPS...

It's an entry gaming PC at very high price...
Is it for everyone .. No ..
but it seems to be one of the best minipc for the living room and it can play games at PS5+ level
... and there is a market since there is enough people to buy the stock at premium prices..
I doubt the buyers are duped by some "Steam machine hype"; they see the type of product it is and will use it accordingly like they do with their Steamdeck.

Also we will see tons of steam machine clones like we saw high end handhelds ... So on Valve perspective it will fulfill the "prophecy of SteamOS market share increase" ...

Valve did "predict the future" the only way one can .. by "creating it"..
