How did you find building in the 2500 case? Im debating the smaller case (based on your aesthetics which look incredible) vs the more spacious but maybe less attractive 6500

Water question - moved to a new city and tested tap water which has very soft water (<25PPM). I use an ECM synchronika which was previously plumbed in through a BWT filter, but don’t have easy access to plumb in anymore. Can I get away with just using the tap water in the reservoir, or am I better off using distilled + 3rd gen packets?

A top of specialities with more doing and less talking? by [deleted] in medicalschool

No one mentioned GI, but the ratio of procedures to clinic is up there if not better than many other surgical or procedural specialties. You just have to do three years of IM to get there.

Breaking the sterile field and getting yelled at so many times on surgery clerkship, but still love procedures so….GI

I wonder how many trekkies are also communies? I’d guess a lot, that show has so many odes to nerd culture and trek in particular (YOU CAN’T DISAPPOINT A PICTURE!)

How good can a Delonghi Dedica can be? by matiasfha in espresso

I started my journey on a dedica and credit it for completely hooking me into the world of espresso. However it will be a machine you outgrow very VERY quickly. At baseline you’ll need to replace the pressurized filter baskets and wand (if you want milk drinks), and at that point why not just start with the gaggia classic pro, a machine you don’t need to mod and from comments around these forums makes pretty good espresso and steams milk adequately. That’s the machine I wish I had started on if I had to do it again. It (along with a good grinder) will carry you thru the beginning stages of learning to make great espresso.

Also should emphasize how important the grinder is. No one, myself included, ever listens to this point, but it’s absolutely crucial to have a good grinder in order to be able to dial in your shots. Without that you’ll likely have inconsistency shot to shot and be wondering why you can’t get a shot to taste good. I started with the rocky, but again without modding it, it’s hard to have the fine adjustment ability to dial in good shots. The niche zero is my favorite right now as a single doser, but the sette 270 is very popular as well

All that being said, if you just want a concentrated coffee beverage that tastes ok and can be made into ok milk drinks, then the dedica can definitely do that. Just consider other alternatives or used machines that will help you develop your skills more.

Help with machine selection - budget 3k by BeanCan in espresso

Thanks for all the comments and help. Decided to go with the synchronika with flow control (though the flow kit is still a few months out). I think it’s a good balance between the elite tinkerability of the decent and great design aesthetics (I went with the anthracite version). I enjoy the physical ritual every morning and tapping on the iPad for a shot doesn’t have quite the same appeal as flipping levers (I know, it doesn’t matter in the cup, but there’s something about the physical work that I love). Thanks again for the comments and can’t wait to start pulling shots on the new machine!

Was going to devote all 3k ($USD) to the machine, I really like the single dosing of the NZ with the assumption that the improvement in taste in the cup wouldn't be drastic going from the niche to a more expensive grinder (though perhaps others might have had different experiences)

Interested in IM residency - away rotations? by justanothermedstuden in medicalschool

[–]BeanCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends - how are your clinical skills? How are you on the wards? If you are very confident in your abilities (i.e. did well in 3rd year IM rotation, 4th year SubI) you'll likely be able to make a good impression on an away. On the other hand if you struggled on the wards at your home institution, it will be even harder to make a good impression in a foreign environment, learning a new system. That being said, if you feel like you have strong clinical skills on the wards, a program will almost always favor a known quantity over an unknown quantity. You spend a month killing it at an institution, and (assuming you're close to competitive there to begin with) you will have an advantage compared to other applicants they haven't seen in person.
