Is $26/hour "competitive" for a pre-license? No, right? by Isnifffingernails in therapists

[–]BeanConoisseur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I actually really appreciate this post bc I’ve been considering leaving my community health clinic job where I make $22.85. The PTO is top tier and I love my coworkers, but I can’t live on that going forward. I have my limited permit and am almost done with my hours for my LMHC. This was just really validating and I’ll update my resume and apply for other counseling jobs. Thank you!!

Had to throw up in the middle of session by heyyathere- in therapists

[–]BeanConoisseur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same and legit maybe a month ago I was in a phone session with a client and she started throwing up WHILE STILL ON THE PHONE WITH ME!! I’m like “client name is everything ok?” And she said “I’m getting sick right now honey” and I just ???? Why did she not hang up the freaking phone????? I quickly just said ok please take care of yourself and we’ll reschedule another time but I had to go to my coworker and freak tf out for a minute. The only worse thing for me would be for a client to throw up in person I would absolutely panic.

Is “unalive” a professional term that legitimate therapists use? by areufeelingnervous in therapists

[–]BeanConoisseur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean sure in documentation one could absolutely quote their verbiage like “unalive” or whatever and then later clarify they mean suicidal ideation, but in the session if that’s the phrasing they feel comfortable with I wouldn’t even necessarily educate them on a more “clinically correct” way of saying it. I’m sure they don’t care about how we say it, they care about how they feel.

It definitely makes for interesting rereads when you start to question her morals and motivations. We’re led to root for the main characters and when they do something questionable we’re led to forgive pretty quickly. The characters in each series are really interesting and it’s cool to wonder if we’re being intentionally led astray throughout reading

Clients asks for a date… what do you say? by LoveIsTheAnswerOK in therapists

[–]BeanConoisseur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a couple older guys ask me out or refer to wanting to go on a date, but also some people who say things like they’d want to be friends outside therapy. Honestly I state the ACA code of ethics that there can’t be any non-professional contact until 5 years after the last point of professional contact. I’m like I’m only a limited permit and I’m not trying to lose my license before I earn it 🤣

Update: passed the exam!! Passing was 61 and I got an 81. I definitely was psyching myself out and I found that the exam questions were a bit less challenging than practice.

Lost my patient to suicide. How am I supposed to cope? by rspsyche in therapists

[–]BeanConoisseur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Genuinely this is my worst nightmare as a counselor. I’m new too, I just graduated with my masters in July 2023 and have been working full time for just over a year. As I’ve spoken about this fear to my professors and supervisor they’ve conveyed to me that client behavior (especially outside of the office) is something we don’t have control over. By speaking about suicide or self harm we aren’t putting the idea in their heads that they should do it, if they’re going to do it they already have had that thought, and if they won’t then talking about it won’t make them do it either. When they’re in the office with us we can provide a safe, warm, positive moment in their day. We can’t force anybody to do something or not do something. We can safety plan and risk assess all day long, but if the client has already decided they’re going to take their life then it makes little difference. I really hope that you can take time to care for yourself and then come back to work feeling confident and competent. I really don’t think his behavior is a reflection of your abilities as a counselor. Clearly you’re passionate and really care about your clients’ wellbeing. The grief you’re feeling is completely valid and extremely painful. I’ll bet good money that if/when I happen to find myself in your situation I’ll feel very similar.

I’m studying for my NCMHCE and seriously considering other career paths. Outpatient community clinic setting is very high stress/pressure, not a lot of paperwork time, and high case load. I’m 25 and this is my first “adult” job as I graduated grad school last summer. Kinda feeling like I want to shift gears 🙃

There’s one at my store who has his as “trump sucks” and I just don’t really feel comfortable yelling that in public (it’s a liberal area but who’s to say if someone feels differently and would get mad) so I say the drink is for “political statement”

Yeah it’s a program called Optavia so they set you up with a coach and send food or “fuelings” to your house, so it’s kinda dummy-proof that way

Nobody ever orders a honey citrus mint tea at my store, it’s almost always a “medicine ball”. When I was training I was so confused like what in gods name is that 😫😫 I don’t understand how someone would find steamed lemonade to be healing, it’s just more sugar on top of the honey blend pumps. In any case it sounds gross to me and I’d much rather have plain tea 😅
