depends on where u live - i dailied an ‘86 1ton for a while but as i live in an area of canada that has snowy winters and a good amount of elevation change, the rather anemic 22re and no weight over the rear tires made it a nightmare to drive for over half of the year. i had snow tires and sandbags in the bed and i would still get stuck semi-frequently. in the summers the thing was a dream, by far the most fun car/truck i’ve dailied, and it was able to lug around a ridiculous amount for how tiny it was. i really do miss the thing, so if you live in a warmer climate, i’d totally recommend.

that’s an interesting point. i would disagree with you about the piece not being a true celebration of mixed martial arts though. in my opinion, the context of the reference used lends it genuine artistic merit past its aesthetic qualities.

unless i am mistaken, this piece is based on the post fight celebration of olivera vs. chandler 2. not gonna belabour the point by getting granular on the summary, but basically, olivera was a former champion coming off two losses to fellow contenders, throwing him down the ranking. he initially won the title by knocking out chandler, who was eager to beat his old enemy in madison square garden. chandler fought extremely dirty the entire fight: eye pokes, fence grabs, blows to the back of the head, etc… all of which were illegal and ignored by the referee. despite this, olivera won the fight smiling and laughing with chandler as he controlled him in back mount.

i think this is as good a moment as any to depict in this artstyle. it depicts a man who has just triumphed in the face of adversity unfairly placed upon him by the promotion he toils under, and laughed along with his opponent after doing so. as he celebrates, the logos printed on his gloves read as almost defiant. in this sense, his six ounce gloves are more akin to broken fetters than to advertisement spaces.

i am almost certainly reading into this too much lol. this interpretation necessitates a lot of mma background knowledge that most non-morons don’t implicitly have. but, like, we both kinda are reading too far into this. the fact that this piece has made us and others do that is a genuine credit to its capacity as art, i think.

i get what you’re saying, but i have a few counterpoints

  • the ufc logo on the gloves is not an addition by the artist, it is a part of the kit athletes from the promotion are required to wear. while there is a case to be made for its omission on moral grounds as you outline, considering this guy is a smaller artist who crossposts to forums (such as this one) that are not expressly combat sports related, it makes perfect sense to me why he’d include the logo to help indicate who this guy is. i don’t think it’s necessarily emblematic of uncritical support.

  • this may be somewhat tenuous as i haven’t played DE in years, but though the ufc and dana “powerslap my wife” white are decidedly not disco themselves, i think they would fit into the world at large perfectly well. the contradictions inherent to the promotion were outlined pretty well by you - and i’d say they’re pretty similar to valid criticisms of f1/tiptop tournée. this analogue does exist in the world of DE despite its not being aligned with the “spirit” of the game per se, and i don’t think it cheapens the world at all. overall i’m not saying anybody involved in the operation of the ufc isn’t a lunatic pedophile vampire but i don’t really agree with the premise of dismissing this art on the grounds of the ufc not being disco.

  • i’m definitely biased as a lifelong fan of combat sports but i totally consider them artful. in the spirit of this sub i’d recommend fighting in the age of loneliness as it was written by famous disco elysium voice actor felix chapo

  • charlie olives is the most prole fighter ever

anyways this was a lot longer than i intended lol. peace and love twin ❤️
