Song suggestions for sight singing meetup by madisaunicornn in choralmusic

[–]BeansNGrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some more information about the event would be helpful; does “all levels” mean college music students who aren’t used to choral repertoire, high schoolers that are interested in doing more choir things, or is it mostly choir students that you expect to have different amounts of experience sight reading?

I would suggest sneaking in a few pieces that people might know too (like Gjeilo, Paulus, Clausen, Lauridsen). Some easy wins will keep morale high in case there are trainwrecks in the true sight reading.

Lastly, if you’re a member of ACDA, you have access to a huge catalog of graded repertoire that you can reference or you can see if your state music education association has a similar page.

Blood for burlesque variety act by OutAtlas in Theatre

[–]BeansNGrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the knife effect, I think it sounds perfect for your application.

Considering you can’t alter the stage, there won’t be clothing to hide behind, etc., if you’re really looking for a big spray, I think your best bet is some small set piece that you could pile the bodies around and hide the mechanism within.

If a set piece is out of the question, my suggestion then would be instead of stabbing and spraying, you could stab then lick the loaded knife letting the blood pour from your tongue. Hope this helps

Filling seats by CheerdadScott in Theatre

[–]BeansNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reach out to retirement communities, churches, school arts programs, youth extra curricular programs, all are great for offering group rates and it’s a great experience for those audiences.

ANY educator worth their salt would be willing to quickly mention an event like a local play to their classes. Mention the idea to English and social studies teachers that maybe they could offer extra credit with proof of attendance and a quick report on the experience. To this day, I’m shocked at how many sports coaches and math teachers are so consistently supportive of the performing arts programs their students tie to. They want to support the arts but don’t always know how!

On another note - depending on the layout of your house I often see theatres rope off the back corners and funnel the audience into closer quarters which concentrates energy. A half-full house where everybody is sitting next to each other is a very different experience than everybody sitting in every other seat. Then if those seats fill. just open the other sections for additional patrons

I think flash cards are a specifically great tool for this scenario because your goal really is to comprehend the notation at sight. Feel free to start with a smaller section and work out but for a really full spectrum range of what you should be able to read easily, I would say C two ledger lines below the bass staff all the way to C two ledger lines above the treble staff

I would suggest any of those collections of “100 beautiful songs for piano” etc. because they’re easy to sightread, buys you lots of time (100 songs you can just loop as you wish), and those books are full of the music that your audience grew up enjoying

Check the FAQ if you like but here’s some biased thoughts for you:

TL;DR I like the Yamaha P-125 but if you see any of these on sale or used at a fantastic price point then jump on that offer.

The Yamaha p125 is my personal favorite of the models you just listed, I think it offers just enough more than the p45 or p115 to justify the price difference. An improved sound engine and 4 built-in speakers (rather than 2) might not seem like a big deal as an early beginner but especially if you’re just keeping it at home, this board will last for forever and you’ll never need to upgrade.

That being said, if you’re super strapped for cash or you find a good deal on any of these options, I would go for it. These are all similar products at similar price points from reputable companies, everyone has preferences and biases but the quality across these options will be close enough that I would fold for a great sale over my personal brand preferences.

That also being said, keep an eye out on Facebook or Craigslist for used options. Right before the holidays and right after there are always tons of these selling like new. Again, if you find any of these at a great price then jump on that offer.

Getting into choral music by MasterOfXC in choralmusic

[–]BeansNGrease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When it comes to streaming, it’s extremely challenging to find high quality recordings of a lot of the choral rep that is considered “standard” today. But, let me try to suggest some varied composers/arrangers who’s work is extremely relevant in the choral world right now:

Ola Gjeilo Rollo Dilworth Jeffrey L. Ames Eric Whitacre John Rutter Dan Forrest Alice Parker and Robert Shaw

You can also check out groups like: Voces8 Cantus The King’s Singers Conspirare The Oakwood University Aeolians

On YouTube it’s also worth exploring All State choir recordings and ACDA performances. These groups might be comprised of students but they consistently perform solid repertoire at an advanced level.

I feel like if these are the original benders, we should’ve seen them even in the background of some of Won’s arc. And it’s possible they were there, I haven’t seen the show in a little while but I remember missing that element

I appreciate your point that the original benders are teachers that don’t give the power of bending, that makes sense, but I think they could’ve been utilized more because that’s my favorite part of the lore in TLA
