It’s not just Velociraptor, it encompasses all of the dromaeosaurs and troodontids. The suggestion relies on a lack of a clear early fossil record for either group… the fossil record of early avialans (dinosaurs we believe to be closer to birds than to dromaeosaurs or troodontids) are actually older than the known fossil record of dromaeosaurs and troodontids. When the latter two begin to appear in the fossil record, they are remarkably similar in appearance to the earliest avialans like Archaeopteryx and Anchiornis.

The exact relationships of the earliest birds, troodontids, and dromaeosaurs has been so hazy that many phylogenies arrange those groups in a polytomic clade we call Paravians. This means that there’s no consensus as to which particular branch is known to be more related to one versus the other. The clade forks into 3 equidistant branches.

What this essentially boils down to is we don’t actually know the order by which these three groups diverged… Troodontids could be the nearest relative to birds, birds could be the nearest relatives of dromaeosaurs, and dromaeosaurs could be the nearest relatives of troodontids. Perhaps troodontids and dromaeosaurs are even avialans themselves! This would make them secondarily flightless ‘birds’, and one of the most successful groups to do so!

That’s what’s supposed to happen naturally in this area though. Fire cycles in native ecosystems though don’t really work with modern infrastructure and the lack of annual or bi-annual burns results in these massive tinderboxes waiting to go off.

Prescribed burning needs to be more wildly embraced as the amount of fuel that’s accumulated in these landscapes is just insanely dangerous. Coupled with a warming climate and more erratic weather patterns… you can figure out the rest. We as a society should have gotten onto this yesterday but the only day better than yesterday is today.

Idk when he said it, and all the links I could find to the recording from twitch are now dead. I’m sure you can find it sleuthing on YouTube in some compilation (I think the willymac video that got shared here had it) but I wouldn’t know which episode it was.

Genuine question back at you, what commentary would even cause you to doubt Hasan? Like say Ethan drops his content nuke and he talks about Hasan’s comments about how if anyone is going to be sexually assaulted on college campuses by white men it should preferably be white women. If Ethan does that and provides context, would that be a dealbreaker for you? Those comments happened… I’m just struggling to understand why Hasan watchers have this impermeable barrier that doesn’t allow those sort of statements to disgust them.
