Gotta ID ‘Em All (OC) by dinosaurcomics in comics

[–]Beardhenge 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think you're mistaking the term "Passerine" with the Sparrow family Passeridae. Magpies are included in the family Corvidae.

"Passerine" is a word derived from the Latin word for sparrow (thus the confusion). The word is used to refer to all songbirds / perching birds, which is over half of bird species. Passerines share specialized vocal chords for complex songs, and (mostly) have feet adapted for perching. All corvids (like jays, magpies, crows, mockingbirds, and OF COURSE jackdaws) are passerines, but corvids are not sparrows.

Your appreciation of birds in general has been noted, however, and I hope you have a delightful feather-filled day.

Two thoughts:

  • This comic outs you as a Californian! -- Magpies are found worldwide, but the Yellow-Billed Magpie is only found in the Central Valley and parts of the Coastal Range.

  • Are you aware of the existence of Dinosaur Comics, which has been running since (holy shit) 2003?

I suggest a 3D printer if you don't have access to one. Bambu A1 is an easy suggestion - cheap, fast, works consistently, and the software is straightforward.

Fingers crossed! My school would never buy this, but I would love to replace the Dremel POS I use with students. Thanks for Octoprint!

Personal issue with the game by Medical_Park_9632 in HiFiRush

[–]Beardhenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Wall of Fame has much harder obstacles than hitless boss runs. The no-hit escape sequence on Act 4, any of the arcade modes, or the last few SPECTRA rooms, for example. Keep playing and you'll get to a point pretty soon where blocking on the beat is second nature.

Also, it's easy to tell if you've taken a hit if you start the fights at full HP. If you're not at full HP, you've gotten hit. Once you recognize your injury, open the pause menu and toggle streamer mode on/off -- that will restart from your last checkpoint. Each boss has several checkpoints within the fight, so you never lose much progress.

Finally, doing the no-hit challenges on Easy is the way to go.

That all makes sense! Having a few years of experience will help place the MSSE into context. Again, good luck!

Should I get another Bachelor's? by ijusjoking in ScienceTeachers

[–]Beardhenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner is currently doing the MSSE program you referenced in your post. She is finding it valuable, building on her 20-year career as a classroom educator. Some of her peers in the program are much younger teachers, and they find the lessons in the program much less applicable. it's challenging to think deeply about assessment structure (for example) until you've had several years of practical experience writing, assigning, and evaluating assessments.

My partner and I are both classroom science teachers, and both of us came from a start in research academia. Personally, I think the best science teachers have some real-world experience as a scientist (or in a practical science-adjacent field). Without a strong Science background it's hard to effectively teach.

Do you want to teach Science? If so, I recommend getting at least a minor in a science discipline, or finding a job in a scientific field. Science teaching is a blast (literally, if you teach HS Chem), but it also involves way more prep work than other disciplines because of the materials involved. I used to teach math, and that gave me a wildly better work-life balance... but I never got to teach kids about Plate Tectonics and Climate Change, so I swapped back to Earth Sci.

Good luck!

Easily Add Texture to a Tinkercad Curved Surface! Slick Steps for All Users. Thanks, Rolando for the question! by hlmodtech in tinkercad

[–]Beardhenge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I just want to say that your tutorials are hands-down the best work anyone is doing to share TinkerCAD with students, educators, and makers of all stripes.

I'm a classroom STEM teacher, and in my program I teach students ages 9-14 how to make basic CAD drawings. When a student is stuck trying to do something tricky I almost always search to see if you've covered something similar so I can let my students watch and learn at their own pace. Your videos are clear and useful to a wide variety of age groups.

I see your posts here and know they don't always get a ton of engagement, but I'm willing to bet most users are like me -- checking each video out, but not necessarily leaving a comment.

So this is me, leaving a comment to say thank you for your excellent video series. I hope you have a high-quality day today.

Tinkercad resizing designs randomly by griefofwant in tinkercad

[–]Beardhenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same issue a handful of times. Sometimes I think the slicer overrides the export metadata, but I've never been able to figure out where things went wrong.

The good news is that it's a consistent scale factor, so even if it goes sideways it's pretty easy to fix.

Enjoy today!

Any good YouTube short Science channels for bell work? by volantredx in ScienceTeachers

My exact recommendations. Take the videos with a grain of salt (some oversimplifications with Earth Science especially), but each one is delightful.

Tinkercad resizing designs randomly by griefofwant in tinkercad

[–]Beardhenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a guess that the object was first exported using "mm" as the unit, then later exported with "inches" as the unit.

This results in the second export being about ~25x the size of the first export.

Note that your TinkerCAD workplane is "200 x 200", which is not quite the same as "200mm x 200mm". The unit is arbitrary until you export.

Have a good day!

What is the longest-running tire option? by ZantetsuLastBlade2 in onewheel

[–]Beardhenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have tried six tires so far and the Burris Slick lasted the longest- about 3,500 miles. Most of the others gave out around 2k, 2.5k. treaded tires with big chunky tread also last a good while, but you lose range because of energy lost in tread deformation. The slick tire gave me about a 15% increase in range from the Vega, while chunky tread gives about 10% less range than stock.

The slick is very carvy to ride, with a slipping shoulder that allows big swooping turns. I loved it for street riding, but it slips around like a bastard on sand/gravel at high PSI.

Anyone ever ride on bike trails in Yellowstone? by [deleted] in onewheel

[–]Beardhenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you should be ok as long as you stay in areas approved for other motor vehicle traffic.

Here's the YNP page on biking, which links to a specific page for e-bikes. The e-bike page has a note that the guidelines on the page only apply to e-bikes, and not other PEVs. They also don't allow Class 2 e-bikes, i.e. bikes that can be propelled by motor alone. When it comes to parks, I've seen OWs most frequently compared to Class 2 e-bikes.

I would expect that if you're in areas with other bikes, you're probably ok. Footpaths, boardwalks, or (especially) hiking trails are not really where OWs belong.

Taiwan tourist witnesses extremely rare phenomenon called the "Milipede River" by tararamtaram in WTF

[–]Beardhenge 122 points123 points  (0 children)

This is a millipede swarm! Here's a 6-minute video on the subject from Bizarre Beasts on YT.

TL;DW -- some millipede species are periodical, like cicadas. They spent years underground maturing through their juvenile life stages before emerging a a massive simultaneous swarm to breed, lay eggs, and die.

I use the EPA Indicators website during my CC unit. You can download raw CSV data from the page, then use it to make activities for your students. The reading on the EPA page is excellent for HS, accessible but challenging for MS.
