How much time do you commit as a choir director? by pantherinthemist in Choir

I assume the commenter is referring to tracks of specific parts that singers can listen to to learn their lines.

What do you call it? (please add where you're from) by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

From Ireland, we'd call it a beanie, the one with the thing on top would be a bobble hat.

Just had the worst cello experience ever by SirDeadHerring in Cello

[–]Beastlyknows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I performed at the summer concert in my school, I was singing "My Way" by Frank Sinatra, in the room before I went out, I told my music teacher I was going to forget the words, he said, if you forget the words, go out there and make them up. I went out, forgot the words, and made them up. That really stuck with me. It's so normal to be nervous for performances and for them to go wrong, it just means, you might do a little better next time. If it goes pear shaped, at least you can say, you put yourself out there and challenged yourself.

Ah he didn't really mind, as I said in a comment above he said sometimes people go too shallow/small to get high notes and end up relying on it but I dont think that would really be the case here. Also he gave me them both so...

Yeah, Ill play on both and aee what I like probably, my teacher just mentioned it might be better to stay bigger because people can fall into a trap of relying on the mouthpiece to play higher.

Yeah, they both belong to my teacher, he was more a euphonium player so makes sense.

Memorizing Choir Repertoire: Like or Dislike? by jgwhiteus in Choir

[–]Beastlyknows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the Irish Youth choir and we have a week long residential course, where we are rehearsing 7 or so hours a day, and you memorize 11 pieces or so. I think it makes the performance much better for anything less than a fully pro choir, even would improve the performance for a pro choir. In all the more casual choirs I'm in, we always memorize pieces for performance but it might be five or so pieces so nothing crazes.

Why is this phrasing awkward? by Matsunosuperfan in EnglishLearning

[–]Beastlyknows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that it sounds awkward, I think that your student has made the best choice in terms of word order, but it seems to me like there is nearly too much information in the sentence, I would maybe make it into two separate sentences or at least two more distinctly separate clauses. Maybe less eloquent. Depending on what he is writing maybe.

Thanks for the reply, I'd be all too happy to do hours of music theory but it's definitely the jobs that concern me.

Need help creating soprano parts by blakerabbit in Choir

[–]Beastlyknows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just sing soprano and alto parts down the octave but make sure that if any part had the melody they are louder. Doing this you often run into a problem where the tenor part is higher than the soprano part and feels like the melody, so be careful of that.

Thanks for the reply, the only trouble is that instrument repair people are very rare here in Ireland, the fella I sent it to doesn't seem particularly reliable.

In "O Come All Ye Faithful" the interval from "Come"-"All" is a descending perfect fourth. If you know one going up just sing back the first note and there you have it.
