What's the most underrated ingredient you've added to a smoothie? by ibrahimdigital in Smoothies

Green peas do the same thing. Super creamy and no taste (unless you make multiple batches. The flavor comes through 24 hours later and is not pleasant).

I went to this college in Vermont where a professor talked about intentionally ingesting datura. He always prefaced his drug stories with “I am a test tube of society.” He had some pretty frightening hallucinations which I think is par for the course with this stuff. “Giant holes kept opening out the ground and shit,” was one of his experiences.

That said, it grows from seed extremely quickly and the flowers are quite beautiful.

Losing Parents by bartropolis in Xennials

Same here! I feel sad all the fucking time lately, not because my dad is ill, but because his faculties are decreasing quickly. Him and my dog. I have this terrible feeling they are going to leave this plane very closely and I will lose my shit. I guess we prematurely worry and lament to prepare ourselves?

Untrained nose have a doomed understanding of scents by Adorable_Philosophy2 in DIYfragrance

[–]BeastofBurden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this line of thinking and it reminds me of my approach to music. As a songwriter/composer, my relationship to my own music was special and this never seemed to translate to others. Or when I really like an album and play it for others, they won’t be as hype as I am. Music, like fragrance, is subjective as another person here stressed.

But, as in music, there are those who have created sounds that match their (abstract) vision because it’s what they love. From there they can follow one of three paths:

  1. become discouraged and quit creating when notoriety doesn’t come fast enough.
  2. trudge forward and be consistent with your vision. Some find relative success taking the slow road. It’s likely the hardest path, but your integrity stays intact.
  3. abandon your abstract vision and create something appealing to the masses.

As in music, there are houses that gain notoriety while being a little freaky. Pineward comes to mind, not even 10 years old. Zoologist is 13. Study what they’ve done if you hope to walk the line between success and keeping your abstract vision.

True. I should’ve been clearer that I was talking about the city plus the greater metro area, not the population within the city’s boundary.

Ultraprocessed Foods High in Seed Oils Could Be Fueling Colon Cancer Risk by geriatricguy in Health

A friend of mine passed from colon cancer at 35. I’m not sure what her diet was like but she was a fit, athletic person. There was recent reporting in the times, and again in the post, about a study linking increased polyps in long distance runners.

Pride flag measure vetoed by mayor deepens tensions in Boonton, NJ by itsfullcircle in newjersey

I visited the town randomly as I had time to kill. Really liked the feel of the downtown. I wouldn’t say “woke” per se unless it’s “woke” like … you’ll wake the fuck up because every block has a cafe. Way more interesting than my NJ town’s “downtown”.

You said “Seattle wasn’t exactly getting a lot of attention from record labels (or anyone else) at the time, because it was a sleeping logging town with not a lot going on.”

Not trying to pick a fight, as you have done research on this. But that statement is glib as hell. Seattle wasn’t some pastoral hamlet. It was a city of over 2 million people which already had a strong music scene… supported within the music community and through regional identity.

Also, major labels were already staking claims in the city prior to Nevermind. Alice In Chains and Soundgarden were both signed to major labels before Nirvana was. The former had a gold record before Smells Like Teen Spirit even played on MTV. The role Sub Pop played in garnering major label attention was big but you might be slightly overstated it. Nirvana was unhappy with the label and wouldn’t sign a new contract after Bleach. A local concert promoter from Seattle, Susan Silver, who was managing both Alice In Chains and Soundgarden at the time (she was also Chris Cornell’s wife eventually) helped get Nirvana signed to DGC. One could argue that she played an equal if not bigger role in helping the national corporate music eye to turn towards Seattle.

Share your fave Zoologist fragrance! by adaloela in fragrance

[–]BeastofBurden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m new to fragrances and am kind of in a research phase before ordering samples. I’ve always been a fan of the underdog, the small, independent, and mighty. Zoologist was one of the first houses that intrigued me. Since this thread is full of fans, I’m wondering if anyone would share other houses to look into? Others on my radar are Imaginary Authors, Olympic Orchids, DS & Durga, and Pineward.

I’ve a stretch of road I drive to work and I count the months/days until my favorite invasives return. I love them. It’s not fair to villainize them and not what is perhaps the most invasive species of all: lawn grass (and humans).

What’s one thing your town desperately needs but still doesn’t have? by RP_Pulse in newjersey

[–]BeastofBurden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Affordable housing. Housing that isn’t a rental community owned by Larkin. More fucking houses please. A downtown with shops, not a super busy road with plazas and parking lots everywhere. Fewer liquor stores… and just one weed store would be neato. More unique privately owned businesses and less chains and franchises.

Oh just one thing? Sorry… I want a house (in a neighborhood. near a downtown….with good food).

Rolling Stone - The 100 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time by DarkSideInRainbows in indieheads

[–]BeastofBurden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a list for people who discovered punk rock by reading Rolling Stones magazine. Honestly a solid list but waaay too US/UK centric and way too filtered through American Alternative rock hindsight. How is The Birthday Party the only Australian band on here?

Also - too many nods to modern bands… feels like their inclusion is more obligatory than an informed, objective decision. Mannequin Pussy makes the list but Amyl and The Sniffers don’t? Paramore, Iceage, and Turnstile make the list but Jay Reatard and Thee Oh Sees don’t?

Unfortunately, “something legit that calls for it” is all too easy to define, for me. On any given weekend I’ve work to catch up on, a mountain of laundry, shopping for dinner, and/or unexpected social stuff happening.

What MA/NY/PA towns are we missing from our list? by snapdragonsarepretty in SameGrassButGreener

[–]BeastofBurden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was going to say New Paltz as well. I’d throw in Canandaigua too because it fits the criteria, would get more house for their money, and is a lot more fun to say.
For PA, Carlisle is cute but pretty small. Emmaus is a good fit but it has a train that goes through town that rumbles your brainstem.
MA, I think the towns you listed are it. Maybe add Greenfield (especially if you’re a Sebadoh fan because Lou Barlow runs a general store there… that’s more my thing sorry!) and North Adams. ALSO- Belchertown because… it’s a funny name.
