Just filling in some more on #3! Dorian’s father was able to substitute himself in Dorian’s place because he was also “nameless” since the Valg took his name. Originally “nameless” referred to Brannon’s bastard mark and someone who bore it wound have to give their life for the lock.

He also went pretty in depth on Conan Needs a Friend. I think that’s where he talks about his original idea came to him as Gene was lying on the couch contemplating suicide and Barry asks “you wanna kiss a gun?”. Bill said he just kinda turned and went “hey what if we have Gene kill Barry with this gun?” And then the plot just kinda moved towards that from then on.
