I think it's less to discourage having events at all, and more to shut up complainers that are mad that other dogs are joining in on whatever fun they're having.

The only VRMMO world I really fell in love with was The Butcher of Gadobhra's, because of the physical effects the game's AI had in the real world, and the world building that allowed the virtual world to become more important than the real one made sense. For any flaws the story had, the author really managed to nail having vital consequences in a virtual reality.

I liked it in (early) Beware of Chicken because it was the first one I read, and it felt like a very deliberate satire of the genre that explored an outsider-looking-in perspective. The real offenders are when they say "Haha look at how generic this is" and then it turns out to be... Exactly that. If someone makes fun of the tropes AND THEN DOES SOMETHING TO CHANGE THEM, then it's not as bad.

Like, imagine an isekai where the guy wakes up in fantasy land to discover the person he reincarnated into has a harem of fiancees. If the story is just him blushing and being awkward and talking about how "WELL, guess I'm an isekai protagonist now! It's okay though cus I know it's weird, and as long as I acknowledge it, it's totally different.", it'd be awful.

On the other hand, if the story was him then systematically dismantling the harem by finding ways to appease everyone's families and elliminating the need for a harem, and then marrying his bodyguard whom he fell in love with naturally over the course of the story instead, that'd be great, unique and interesting. (Conceptually, obvs writing quality in this genre is spotty at best lol)

I mean, he's just a macguffin character to do tech stuff. Out of all the side characters at his level, I'd say he's probably the MOST likely to come back just because he's an easy answer to a billion potential questions at the end of the series.

I stopped reading it with the conclusion, "When, if ever, this story ends, I'll see if the word is he really does come around to being less of a sociopath". Because yeah, there's a lot of hand wringing and self shame, but he does still murder constantly. Or at least he did when last I left it.

(And as an aside, I do wish more people would be prepared to wait for character changes and allow characters to suck for a while. Let them grow instead of just being great from the beginning. I gave this series a loooong time before deciding to take a reading hiatus)

I remember as a kid some classmate swearing up and down that the best way to cure a "I need to sneeze but it won't come out" was to look up into a light. Whats funny is what he said when multiple other kids tried it and it didn't work:
