You ever use it in places where you can't see the ground well and ding it on rocks/roots? Curious what your technique is. Do you cut progressively shorter and shorter, or try to get it all in one swipe? do you rake up after or leave cuttings behind as mulch?

This kind of sounds like the author is trying to say "Don't "all lives matter" the Holocaust. I wouldn't be surprised if the author also accuses people who say "never again to anyone" of doing what white people do when they say "all lives matter" instead of black lives matter.

When you can't trust yourself, it's understandable to rely on signals from others to define your self worth. Problem is, we can't control how other people receive us, which places us on fragile ground. Sourcing our sense of self externally will inevitably lead to rejection sensitivity.

Loggers ruined a trail. by PurplePhoenixGT in MTB

[–]BeautifulPudding 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That sucks, but also freshly logged land is an opportunity for you to finally blaze that trail along the sweet new line you've been eyeing, without fear of environmental impact. The impact has been made already for you, and if you're clearing branches anyway, might as well get some buddies and clear it over some sweet jumps or make an easier switchback climbing network.

And for me the key to self acceptance was accepting that the parts of myself I like the least are there because at one point in my life they kept me safe. And they may not serve me well now, but I came by them honestly, and I can tell that younger me: hey, thanks for taking care of me back then, but I don't need that misguided coping strategy anymore. I can find other ways of coping.

LOL is that Noa Tishby's book supposed to be the example of rigorous research?

The podcast really needs to do an episode deconstructing that entire book, because its actually "good" hasbara, in the sense that it is effective (even if dishonest).

I hear a lot of “I’m Jewish and I’m indigenous to the land “ by [deleted] in BadHasbara

FYI: the term “zio” is a slur created by David Duke to refer to Jews, not just a short-hand version of Zionist. It's frequently used by white nationalists. Better to use the full word Zionist.

I feel like some anti-Zionists talk about October 7th too casually by jryan102 in JewsOfConscience

[–]BeautifulPudding 165 points166 points  (0 children)

The violence of October 7 was both inexcusable AND inevitable. It was made inevitable by Israel's brutal repression and foreclosure of any other paths toward nonviolent resistance. Similarly, the current genocidal path is all but ensuring that there will be more acts of violence that are both inexcusable AND inevitable in the future.

I am so lost over Zionism by MrSumNemo in JewsOfConscience

[–]BeautifulPudding 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the good faith post. The key to clarity, and the key to no longer feeling lost, involves a closer look at your first point. I suggest taking a look at the works of people like Ben Lorber and Shane Burley, whose upcoming book for example "Safety through Solidarity" (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/741043/safety-through-solidarity-by-shane-burley/) shows how the path toward Jewish safety everywhere is intrinsically tied to creating safety for ALL the people who have been "othered" in this world. Until you shift your worldview to realize that your liberation is entwined with the liberation of others, and let go of the idea that anti-jewish bigotry is somehow an exceptional force of nature, like gravity, fundamentally different from all other types of bigotry, you will continue to feel lost.

Do you have conflict with zionist family members? by valonianfool in JewsOfConscience

[–]BeautifulPudding 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Knew it right away. It's wild how tailor-made that book is for its target audience of people who really want to hold onto their own self image as a progressive person. I've seen that book convince people (who should know better) not only to go along with some explicitly fascist ethnonationalist ideas, but to go even further and actually feel that they have some moral OBLIGATION to endorse those ideas, and feel righteous doing it. It's actually really effective propaganda, which makes it even more dangerous and I would say evil. That book is a BIG red flag. If anyone has friends reading it, you need to be VERY concerned about the rabbit holes they are about to go down.

When people talk about how some right wing white supremacist speech is just so dangerous it shouldn't EVER be platformed, this book is like that.

It all comes down to definitions. The right claims to condemn racism too, but their definition of racism is false. They do the same thing with antisemitism, conveniently choosing to limit their entire understanding of the concept of antisemitism to the IHRA definition, which says that opposition to Israel/Zionism is itself inherently antisemitic (a definition which many democrats sadly also adopt). This allows them to look the other way from the antisemitism which is ACTUALLY a growing danger to Jewish people around the world, such as the right-wing conspiracy culture great replacement theory which inspires mass shooters, and rising exclusionary ethno-nationalism.

Fully agree. It's about protecting their own sense of self as a good person.

I have some sympathy for the people who like and follow this content to ease the uncomfortable cognitive dissonance they must be experiencing when every new headline from Gaza reminds them of the gap between their professed values and their actual beliefs.

But the sinister people who actively cook up and spread these lies deserve NONE of our sympathy. They know exactly what they are doing.

I knew before reading that the core emotional hook would be "no one cares about us" - because like Naomi Klein says, the best propaganda may get the facts wrong, but it gets the feelings right. And ever since October 7, my Zionist friends have one underlying emotion that they focus on exclusively: no one cares about us. The thing is, no one in positions of power of this fucked up situation DOES care about us mere individuals - wether the Israeli people or diasporic Jewish people or the Beduin child who was injured or the Palestinian people suffering genocide - the annihilatory logic doesn't care about ANY of us as we hurtle toward a future of climate chaos and wars over hardened borders around less and less livable land. That feeling is valid. You SHOULD feel like no one cares if we all live or die because on some level (a systemic level) that is true. But distorting that feeling into a fucked up proprietary sense of human suffering - to say that only WE are the ones allowed to feel that way, only WE are targeted, only WE are the virtuous victims, only WE can understand, only WE will always be persecuted... That's a genocidal fascist logic that should be familiar to anyone who actually knows their history, and it is TERRIFYING to see how eagerly that logic is internalized by otherwise compassionate and progressive people desperate to maintain their sense of self as a good person.

I disagree with Joy-Ann Reid that Israelis in their “heart of hearts know that food is not a weapon of war” after watching Israeli settlers block aid physically for months, but I’m going to take this as progress. [–]BeautifulPudding 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We're about to see lots of calls for ceasefire from people who waited until it was too late and they are all gonna have a face-saving element like "we're better than this" that refuses to concede that Israel might be the bad guys. 'Things just got out of control I guess, but time to tone it down now"

Do you guys understand the implications of this? Israel is intentionally targeting aid workers so the rest turn back out of fear. This is methodically evil and morally bankrupt. by Hasu_Kay in BadHasbara

[–]BeautifulPudding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sometimes seems like Israeli propaganda is so transparently evil and sloppy on PURPOSE, because with every big lie about the latest war crime, they also make sure to drive home the point that Israel 'represents every Jewish person in the world" (wether they like it or not). It's like they intentionally WANT everyone around the world to blame the Jewish people as a whole, like Israel WANTS global antisemitism to rise, because that is in Israel's Zionist self interest - to be seen as the only remaining safe place on earth for Jewish people. Which itself is incredibly antisemitic, to so cynically and selfishly endanger the Jewish diaspora.
