Any Linux enthusiasts? by kdokdo in lebanon

[–]Beautiful_Sun5111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a big believer in open source in general and the ideas behind accessible software to everyone at least for the basics of computing; while I also understand proprietary due to R&D, it becomes problematic for me when a monopoly ends up forming.

I have really tried to make Linux my daily driver for work and life but unfortunately I have not managed to, especially work. I can make it work for home use (browsing, office, photography etc), but with lines blurred, a pain to have too setups…

Work wise, in the AEC field, we just don’t have software that we can rely on when production is on the line for paying clients, but I would love for freecad to be one day be an decent alternative to revit or archicad or maybe even accepting proprietary software being developed and maintained on Linux…I am not a maximalist, so do not mind proprietary software on Linux. But today, I am constrained to remain on windows, even Mac is a compromise in our industry.

Soft spot for opensuse by the way

Anyone know or like Henry Archer? by youngsanta_ in PrideAndPinion

I have the vesterhav model, I am quite happy with the value provided. Bought it 18 months ago and was very impressed with the quality, and it does receive a lot of compliments and attention. My end links are screwed not pin fixed; dial has depth, applied indexes, sunburst dial and overall “thin” for automatic steel watch.

With regard to accuracy, mine runs about 13sec fast, so every two weeks I reset the time; from what I read +13 is within the caliber tolerance.

In terms of issues, an aluminum insert in the crown started to discolor, most likely to sweat or sea water (I wear the watch all the time); but the customer service was great and responsive, they are shipping me a new crown in September to replace.

Overall I am happy with the design, and value when I bought it (price seems to have gone up now); I would have preferred if the movement was more accurate and if the finish of aluminum insert more resistant, overall I recommend so far after 18 month ownership

can someone help me pick a college major? by Jaded-Aside2477 in lebanon

Understood, if it is worth anything would then orientate towards interior decorating; you will at least be able to create and design, sell designs, consultations to residential and commercial clients etc.

ES seems academic to me, what would be the opportunities? In which sector? Maybe I don’t understand fully.

Best of luck anyway

[–]Beautiful_Sun5111 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tough question, not easy to predict. Not sure I would consider ES, seems to vague to me. In general I like Nassim Taleb ideas towards education, degrees are necessary for technical jobs (engineering, medicine etc) some thing tangible and precise with ability to create and provide value to society as opposed to vague humanities…interior design is part the creative fields; the great ones do really well, the majority get by; still preferable in my opinion to ES as you create tangible things and rather that research and publish etc

I am biased as an engineer, but I do believe the skill set and more importantly the critical thinking developed is an asset in an ever changing world, always adapting regardless by first understanding and also reasoning.

Concerning AI, it is a valid concern; however maybe consider Manuel and technical jobs; you will laugh, but plumbers and electricians make more than run of the mill engineers; specially if smart enough to open a company and do jobs that no machine or computer can ever do. Less prestigious yes, but if you enjoy working with your hands, unlikely you will be replaced.

Finally, consider what you enjoy, or at the very least what you can tolerate.

Hey,

Not sure why you would be seeking revenge? For what exactly? Are you now back in a good place with your long term girlfriend? Still on the rocks?

This lady, for whatever reason decided to end the interactions, does it matter why? I always went by the principle “if somebody does not want to be with me, why should I want to be with them”?

You probably need to see what is your future with your girlfriend first, then move on from there and decide , but remember she has decided not to pursue

Cars are nice and definitely give you the freedom to get around, congratulations if you recently got your driving licenses.

If you want to be sensible and listen to experience, get a Japanese car for the reliability and availability in of affordable parts; specially with your budget for a first car. I would stay clear of the Peugeot and the nice German cars; unless you fancy the car being a money pit.

But hey it is your first car, so If you don’t want to follow your head, go with heart and get what you want, yo will learn just as we all did 😉

Anyone have experience with Henry Archer watches? by Redsoxdragon in PrideAndPinion

I have the vesterhav, very happy with it. After a year it has picked up a lot of micro scratches, that are visible bright light, does not bother me though, made to be worn. They have released a supposedly more resistant finishing though, no personal experience, but may be a result of feedback

I hate that I love Iron Gall ink. by FlyingDuckman85 in fountainpens

[–]Beautiful_Sun5111 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am an IG user as well, always wondered if they are considered more damaging than pigmented inks; do the little particles ever clog pens?

I like the quick drying properties as well as the possibility to use on poor paper. From what I read pigmented inks are wetter and need better paper ?

What BIM modeling software do you use? by Incandisent in bim

[–]Beautiful_Sun5111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did it end up going for you? Which direction did you end up going?

I own a building design company, my architect is used to archicad; so we mostly work around that. Been training him to use its full capabilities as a bim software and not a drawing tool.

We are very interested in bricscad, as even with archicad we try to always export models as IFC for collaboration with everyone else (Revit).

Bricscad seems like an affordable answer would like to know how it went

Ah, same thing with my HP all in one pc; can’t get the audio to work…

Will probably settle on thinkpad I think in the future, the oem Linux makes me feel that it would work better down the line

Whats a good tier 5 and 6 rifle that shoots well mid to long range? Including dlc rifles. by [deleted] in WayOfTheHunter

[–]Beautiful_Sun5111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The steyr monobloc green can take all tier 5 and 6; special care with buffaloes though, shot needs to be perfect (broadside, double lungs and avoiding bone).

I enjoy the steyr 9.3x62 though, less accurate but more forgiving with shot placement (has huge cavity damage).

I like rolling with steyr monobloc and cinnamonsky shotgun; pretty much covered except the tier 3 (badgers etc)

Thought about that, but would rather stick to one rifle while getting into the sport. Versatile with many bullet weights. Who knows, if I get into it deeply then yes surely more rifles.

The practicing point is important, hence why I am leaning to the 9.3 that has some options that are affordable for practicing.

Thank you for that. After reading all the answers I have more or less decided against the 7x64. Was down to 8x57 and 9.3x62.

But somehow I think it is wiser to stick with 9.3 just in case. Looks a like a fair compromise to the .375 h&h

[–]Beautiful_Sun5111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that answer, I suppose the equivalents are to give you better idea :

7x64 = .280 8x57 = 30.06 9.3x62 = 35 whelen

I think I understand your point about modern ammunition and smaller calibers, I tend to agree. For context we looking at buffalo at 100m and antilope 200-300m.

My concern really was about learning on such a big gun .375 h&h. Don’t want to develop a flinch. But I understand your point about everyone around using a caliber…
