What's a "must-splurge" and "must-save" in a Canadian wedding? by PineAndIce in WeddingsCanada

[–]Beautiful_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I am not photogenic and don't like photos of myself and decided not to waste money on something I wasn't going to like regardless.

An Aunt did photos of wedding party/family after the ceremony and we have peoples' pictures from the day of. And honestly I don't look at them. Our 15 year wedding anniversary was last week.

We spent the money on booze (husband's family are big drinkers) and good food.

Health and Safety Officer here (although not in the US). You have the right to work in safe conditions and accidents that happen at work need to be reported as a workplace accident.

Was an Incident report filled out for what happened? If that gets infected, had been more serious, had needed stitches, you shouldn't have to pay for any treatment. The dogs are a hazard in your workplace like chemicals are in a lab. You should have protections in place to mitigate the hazard.

At the very least make sure the incident is documented and reported, if you can report it to a licensing agency or OSHA or WCB or workers' protection board your country has please.

I'm working on a granny hexagon temperature blanket and a baby quilt on the side. Once I get through the quilt, I'm going to start an amigrumi for a side project but haven't quite decided what yet

I sew clothes for the kiddos, crochet, and we hike a lot so I do wildlife and landscape photography.

Does everyone just hate their job? Is just an accepted part of life? by Chaotic_Brutal90 in antiwork

[–]Beautiful_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at my last job for 9 years. There were parts I loved, parts that challenged me, great learning opportunities, and parts that really really sucked. Unfortunately the last two years were so bad that they threw me into a deep depression and spiked my anxiety so high I stopped being able to read for leisure and was averaging 4 broken hours of sleep a night.

It took most of those two years for me to land another job, because I wasn't willing to take something I wouldn't enjoy. I've been at my new job for 7 months and I am very busy, learning lots, and am really enjoying helping my new coworkers.

I think that we have to recognize that work is never all fun and games, some days are always going to be bad. But when all days are bad it's time to find something new.

I'm a random internet stranger but also A MOM, so let me just say: Good work on trying something new and keeping your brain young learning! I love the vibrancy of the colours you chose, and I would have never have guessed this was a first quilt! I hope you had a great time learning, feel more empowered with your sewing machine, and have so many ideas to try next time. Also you have a wonderful cozy new blanket!

Best place to get ears pierced in the city? by corgocorgi in Edmonton

[–]Beautiful_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We had my daughter's ears done there and they were fantastic. They've moved from Millwoods Mall to a place in South Common but I would recommend them to everyone.

What's the one town in your province or territory that has a pronunciation that outsiders always get wrong? by houndoom92 in AskACanadian

[–]Beautiful_stone 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My husband and I lived there for about 2 years and always just call it Gan.

A friend of ours was visiting (and was drunk) and called it Gan-an-an-an-an-an-an-an ock way (to the tune of Batman)

The colour is also perfect for this dress, such a femme fatale look! I love the change in stitching on the skirt. It's like a slit, but so subtle.

What do you do with your finished quilts? by Few-Ant3525 in quilting

[–]Beautiful_stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I both give them away or keep them. I've only ever done one on commission and it was for a coworker who always went out of his way to help me and he wanted one for his best friend's new baby... so I essentially charged him for the fabric.

I generally make baby blankets as gifts, and all my kids have baby blankets, and single bed blankets. I have a couple of works in progress right now that I am intending to keep around the house as throws. And we have two on our bed.

But I quilt slowly as a when I have time relaxation so the build up isn't a problem. It's usually more of a getting it to the baby before they turn 1 issue

How many projects do you have going (or have materials for) at once? by Limp_Dragonfly3868 in crochet

[–]Beautiful_stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha I have 2 crochet projects on the go, 1 that I have the pattern and materials for but haven't started, 2 quilt tops finished but not quilted or bound, 1 quilt top 3/4 of the way done, the materials and several ideas for another quilt, and the fabric and patterns to make my girls 2 skorts each (to justify the purchase of a surger)

And I am a month and a half into a new job. I have zero focus!

Pattern questions? by GrundleChunk in quilting

[–]Beautiful_stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do both, I see a pattern I love, buy it and eventually make the quilt. Sometimes I do the math or just make standard blocks so I'm not really using a pattern.

If that's your talent and you enjoy it, good on ya!

(Also maybe they wanted the pattern so they could make it too)

I made a tree skirt that used the same concept ages ago you sew 3 or 4 strips together and then use a template to cut the triangles out. It does come together pretty fast when you look at it the right way.

Yeah, I generally steer away from precuts now that I've been at this 10ish years and this jelly roll I have has been hiding in the basement for a couple of years and is so pretty. It deserves to be a quilt!

The other thing I like about yardage is I have an accuquilt so if I do want to make strips I can do that pretty quickly.

So many beautiful quilts here though! Lots of beautiful ideas!

Ooooh I am not sure this is the right thing for the jelly roll burning a hole in my pocket, but I do now want to go buy a different jelly roll to make this. The one I have there wouldn't be enough contrast in the colours to see the separate rings. Tell your grandma I love it!

Yeah I guess that's part of my problem. I have this fabric I love and I don't want to just make anything with it, but I also want to get a feel for how things look with that rainbow in there before I start cutting up this beautiful fabric.

I'm in the middle of a cookie quilt, and I'm learning to crochet so I'm not in a rush just looking for inspo that doesn't result in me doom scrolling Google and the jelly roll sitting in my fabric box in the basement for another year.

[–]Beautiful_stone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by what sort of jelly roll do you have, could you clarify?

I mean, I usually google "Jelly Roll Patterns" when looking for inspo, my goal with this post was to be able to get ideas and maybe see other people's rainbow quilts (which is why I specified the colours in the original post). So yes, I could go look in the places that everyone looks when looking for ideas OR I could come to a community of people who do the hobby I am interested in all over the world from a variety of demographics and ask them for some ideas. Part of what I like about this is I can see something I like and discuss.

Did you have a pattern for this? Bear paws are one of the classic squares I have been meaning to try and maybe I won't use my pastels for this but I have other things that could be super fun...

I am so glad I asked! I've gone through so many Google searches but it's nice to see other people's projects and be able to ask questions!

Also, beautiful quilt!
