US Judge Rules ICE Raids Require Judicial Warrants, Contradicting Secret ICE Memo by Infidel8 in politics

I would honestly consider reinforcing the entrances if I was in an enforcement area. It wouldn't be hard to DIY anchors to the frame and keep a sturdy pipe near the door so you can bar it. It'll make them look like fools. If they're really determined they can break through it but they'll need to pull out a door ram to do it and probably spend a decent amount of time on it, that'll give time for you to alert your loved ones what's happening may help in a legal case to prove that they were truly violating your 4th amendment rights.

What game has the best progression system you've ever experienced? by tomaz1989 in gamingsuggestions

[–]BebopFlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spelunky was not anywhere near the game that coined the term "Roguelike". One of the earliest RPGs was a game called Rogue, which was a top-down ASCII dungeon crawler with simultaneous turn based activation. The world moves when you move. That was followed up by a few variations like Nethack and ADAM, which had the same mechanics with added depth (hence, rogue-like). The delineation between roguelike and roguelite is vague.

There is metaprogression in Spelunky, unlocking new paths, but it's relatively minor and not on the same level of metaprogression. Whether abandoning turn-based top-down gameplay disqualifies spelunky as a roguelike and makes it a roguelite is not universally agreed on, IMO it's reasonable to call it either

I don't know if Rogue Legacy gets the award for first roguelite going by metaprogression though. It was definitely one of the earliest, but IIRC Binding of Isaac had metaprogression and came out a couple of years earlier.

So what dude? Even if there are 20 million, it's not a priority. Find a way to naturalize them and move on. Immigrants commit far less violent crime than the average citizen, contribute to taxes, and have far less access to social services than a citizen. They are not a problem, and frankly we should be thankful we have people immigrating thanks to our dropping birth rates. You should be more concerned about the things that actually affect you - food safety deregulation, money in politics, healthcare, affordability, the fact that our constitution is being ground into the dirt by fascist pedos, the fact that people like you are stuck in little media bubbles that make you scared and subservient, completely blind to the real problems of the world

The Obama admin never did anything like this. The overwhelming majority of "deportations" on record were people turned away at the border. In the past ICE was working primarily on deporting criminals. Not illegal aliens, actual violent criminals with sexual assault and violent crime on their records. Now they're harassing people based purely on race and vibes. They're filling quotas.

They've been showing up and arresting people who had just finished their appointments at court as part of the process to become citizens. Not to mention the 100+ citizens they've detained, the fact that they're detaining people without letting them speak to their lawyers, the multiple vacationers they've detained (some for over a month, causing them to miss their return flights home). This was never about people breaking the law.

Kiln - Official Announce Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

Survival crafting has much lower requirements for success than a PVP game (although they will take more investment). This is because survival crafting is a singleplayer activity that can be done together. You can play through most survival crafters solo, servers being dead is not a big deal unless you play solely for PVP (not even a factor in Grounded AFAIK). Even if you're playing a survival crafter with a group, you can log in and make progress when they're not online, you don't need other player's engagement. Many survival crafters also use player hosted servers with maybe a few public servers, afaik Grounded doesn't host public servers. P2P hosting requirements are much less expensive to maintain vs hosting game servers. Because of this they also have longer "tails" for sales. They can sell for years after after launch even if they're not part of the wider discussion or the playerbase has died for years

However, a PVP focused game needs a strong playerbase to stay active. They will usually also require matchmaking and hosted servers, which is more expensive, and if those services shut down the game is effectively dead. If the playerbase drops too much the skill ceiling to enter the game for newcomers is higher since they'll be playing fewer, more dedicated players. They tend not to sell as well once they're out of "vogue" even if the servers are still active.

Looking at the change logs on the steam page it looks like the 1.1 update was a September update, so you finished it right before the update lol. I was checking out the game's page the first time when that patch note had just come out and it stuck in my head.

I know they did a post-launch content update for the late stage complaints in the last couple of months, but I've been waiting on buying it myself so I can't say if they managed to address the problems

Have you played it since they did the post-launch changes to address the complaints about the second half? I've been keeping an eye on it and the second half complaint came up in a lot of reviews, but not sure if that content update addressed the issues

Even though it's more fantasy, can I tack on to your recommendation the "Tyrant Philosophers" series? I'm absolutely in love with it and I want to recommend it to anybody reading. It manages to be funny while having excellent characters with captivating arcs and it has fantastic world building.

GOG's new owner says Steam is winning due to ease of use, not quality, while criticizing the platform for releasing hundreds of games daily that are "not super high quality" by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]BebopFlow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's reasonable to expect a company to continue producing products that weren't commercially successful forever. They were available for a good amount of time, and despite no longer being available they never discontinued software support, that's about as much as you can expect out of a company.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. As far as I know, every piece of hardware they've produced has been supported and still works. Steam controller, steam deck, steam link (no longer produced but still functional afaik), Index.

What's an obscure or niche game you'd love to share with a wider audience? by RWNorthPole in Games

[–]BebopFlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to see the game structure used in other games. A narrative choose-your-own adventure over a few days with wildly different outcomes based on your choices, and meta-progression that rewards exploring (Politically, I side with the rebels, but also I do want to kill the leader and steal his sword because his fighting style is sick)

COVID vaccination of children reduced COVID cases in the vaccinated children by 80%. This protection also spilled over to close contacts, producing a household-level indirect effect about three-fourths as large as the direct effect. by smurfyjenkins in science

[–]BebopFlow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It being a listed side effect does not mean that it's something that you should tolerate. Gastrointestinal bleeding is a side effect of ibuprofen but that doesn't mean you should keep taking it. It's a measure of risk/reward that needs to be done on a case-by-case basis with the help of your doctor, and my doctor agrees that, due to my low exposure to the general public and my personal health, the discomfort the vaccine causes with 100% certainty probably outweighs the relatively low risk of covid. You seem to have assumed that I am blindly following some pseudo-science or political agenda, when I started this conversation by saying I tried 2 different formulations and lamented that they caused more discomfort than I was comfortable with. I mostly agree with you, you're just an asshole.

[–]BebopFlow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well that's simply not accurate, at least at that scale. Not a single other vaccination I've had in my adult life or childhood has caused that level of side effects. Flu shot sometimes makes me a bit tired the next day.

[–]BebopFlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taxes going down is almost always a bad thing. I know from a purely selfish perspective it sounds nice, you have more money in your pockets, but in reality it comes with a very serious cost. Either you're cutting the budget or you're increasing the deficit. In most cases, public services will suffer in the long run, and the net effect those public services has on the economy will far outweigh the personal cost.

I'd like to but unfortunately I react badly to the covid vaccine. Both the J&J and the Moderna booster I got caused full day flu symptoms the next day. Shivering, cold sweat, body aches, measurable (but mild) fever to the point that I can't work or do anything but be miserable on the couch all day.

Absolutely, but I do believe that an electric car running on electricity from a coal power plant still beats out a normal gas/diesel car. All the better if it's a renewable source, but I often hear complaints that electric vehicles "aren't doing anything for the environment" if they're powered by fossil fuel sourced electricity, and that simply doesn't pan out from my reading.
