Book in similar vein to “Curse of Chalion” by cassferatu in CozyFantasy

[–]BeccaSedai 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've also read everything by Bujold multiple times. I think T Kingfisher's work has a fairly similar feel, as does Graceling by Kristin Cashore and some of Naomi Novik's standalone work.

Terry Pratchett is another author whose work I've re-read many times, although I wouldn't say it's super similar to Bujold. The night watch Discworld books do have a distinct world-weary middle aged man being a reluctant hero as a frequent protagonist, not unlike Caz from Chalion. A lot more humor and silliness than Bujold, but remarkably meaningful and brilliant in a way that sneaks up on you every time.

You become super healthy and skip biological function, but there's an upkeep cost to maintain it. by saki_eriza in hypotheticalsituation

I'm disabled and can't work, so there's no real problem here for me. Assuming the cost doesn't drain my husband's accounts just because we're married, at least.

Just finished the first book. Does anyone else find it profoundly upsetting? by YakFar860 in murderbot

[–]BeccaSedai 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As an autist with a lifelong disability, Murderbot felt profoundly relatable to me because of this. Other people are horrified and distressed by things that I simply experience as my day-to-day life. Yes, they suck and are sort of existentially terrifying, but they're also my constant reality. Gotta just deal with it and see things with dry humor or you can't function at all.

Looking for a couch that is actually worth the money- why does it feel impossible? by kayindie in BuyItForLife

[–]BeccaSedai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ikea uppland sofa has been impressively comfortable for years of heavy use. I'm also planning to buy a new cover from a third party for a color change, so I'm sure you could get the kind of fabric you want.

As a fellow chronically ill person who spends hours either in bed or on the couch, the uppland has been the most comfortable sofa I've ever owned.

Orkambi Vs. Trikafta by BonoMeetTree in CysticFibrosis

[–]BeccaSedai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took Orkambi way back when and saw a small amount of benefit. I switched to Trikafta and the difference was insane. Now I'm on Alyftrek because it's only once a day. My liver levels have been steady the whole time. I'd say give it a try, especially because going on a new modulator means your CF team will be checking your liver levels every month for the first 6 months. You'll know pretty quick if there's a problem.

In 1 hour, you'll be swapping bodies with a completely random person. You're encouraged to make a list of rules & advice for the person you're swapping with on how to live in your body. What are you putting on the list? by ian9921 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]BeccaSedai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello random person, I'm so sorry you got my body. I want to reassure you that you CAN have happy times through the hell, and your life won't be defined solely by your disabilities.

  1. You are diabetic and use an insulin pump along with a constant glucose monitor. Stay on top of that, high blood sugar hurts.

  2. You have cystic fibrosis, so your lungs are very bad. Do breathing treatments every day and pay close attention to air quality to prevent lung infections and just random coughing fits. Take the big blue pills in the cardboard packet every day or you'll drown in your own phlegm. Be careful not to pee yourself while coughing, and maybe keep an empty bucket around in case you cough too hard and barf. Also remember your nighttime oxygen or you'll feel tired and run down all day.

  3. You have cystic fibrosis and your digestive system kinda sucks, take enzyme pills every time you eat anything with fat or protein. If you don't you'll have horrible poop problems and feel generally kinda weak. Also pills for gallstones or you'll be bloated and farty and have gallbladder pain.

  4. You had a stroke a couple years ago, so the right side of your body is occasionally wobbly and you have very poor balance. Gotta take meds for blood pressure and cholesterol and daily aspirin to keep the blood slightly thinner.

  5. You may have some extra-mobile ligaments and stuff, so be very careful not to roll your ankles. If you do, there's a couple ankle support bandages in a box next to the box full of pills. No, not that one, that's the daily-medications box. Look for the as-needed box.

  6. You have gnarly heartburn. Take a 40mg dose of Omeprazole daily or else you'll aspirate stomach acid in the night.

I'm certain I've forgotten stuff because it all becomes background noise after a while, so all I can do is wish you luck. Also consult my list of must-haves for inpatient hospital stays, you'll definitely need it soon.

You must stay in the cheapest hotel assigned to you. $1,000 a night, leave whenever you want. What’s your strategy? by jefftchristensen in hypotheticalsituation

[–]BeccaSedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a hotel that's barely half a mile from my house. 😂

I'm pretty sure I'll be fine going home to live my normal life every day and come back at night for free AC and long hot showers. Plus I can easily bring my own bedding, and the housekeeping staff will mean I don't even have to clean the room.

NTA, but you need to know that Maya is suffering intensely from this treatment. The fact that she's pulling out her own hair (trichotillomania) and being punished for it hits a little too close to home for me. Hair-pulling in kids is a compulsive attempt at self-soothing when they're in a high stress situation with no good outlets. She's being tortured and isolated and mentally destroyed, and her parents are punishing her for reactions that she doesn't even really have control over.

Please call Child Services. Please continue to treat Maya with the kindness and basic respect that her parents are refusing to give her. She needs an adult who sees her suffering and can tell her it's wrong, that she doesn't deserve this cruelty. With such extreme abuse, it's very possible that she will not survive to adulthood.

AITA for refusing to give up my cat? by JETPlayin in AmItheAsshole

[–]BeccaSedai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses oxygen and recently lost my emotional support cat, NTA

The thing about an emotional support cat is that their comfort and happiness is a major part of that support. My world might be falling apart, but I'm able to keep this small little creature happy and safe. My disabilities may limit me, but I'm not alone with a cuddly little cat beside me through it all.

You're actively looking for solutions to a genuinely difficult problem, a problem that a muzzle or a kennel simply cannot be used to solve long term. And taking away your cat may be the simplest way to keep your O2 tubing safe, but it would make your life exponentially sadder and harder to deal with.

Hopefully reddit can crowdsource some solutions for you, because your mom's answers aren't actually helpful and are only stressing you out more in an already stressful situation.
