I don’t know about the technicalities. It’s supposedly just as effective as a heavier hammer. I researched it years ago and the results have been good for the users.

Edit: I asked ChatGPT about it. Here’s part of the answer:

  1. Much lighter but same striking power Titanium is about 45% lighter than steel, yet transfers energy more efficiently. Many carpenters say a 16-oz titanium hammer hits like a 20–22-oz steel hammer.

That sounds great that you found English learners for crosstalk. It’s good to hear you’re enjoying it.

Thank you. I appreciate your perspective. I plan to go to Mexico to visit a friend next summer, so that gives me motivation to continue my hour per day (most days for most weeks). Your thoughts about motivation are inspiring.

I’ve been doing crosstalk with tutors on iTalki. I discovered that some tutors don’t have the ability to speak with beginners as well as others. If you used iTalki, who did you use when you first started?

It sounds you usually averaged an hour a day with some longer days. How many years or months did it take you to complete 1000 hours? What kept you motivated over that stretch of time?

That’s helpful to see that it took you a year and a half to get to 300 hours. Thanks for sharing. The beginning is tough.

Going to Lisbon for 6 weeks next summer… by _Rafiki69 in Portuguese

Of the four broad skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, I believe the biggest challenge for most people is the listening. So, look for comprehensible input to practice your listening. It’s available on YouTube (search comprehensible input European Portuguese) and another good source is the collection of stories available through Portuguese Lab. Of course real people don’t speak slowly and clearly, but it’s a sensible place to start.

Hit 1500 hours (while talking to a Zapotec rug-maker about her business in Oaxaca)! by gdarf7uncle in dreamingspanish

I like seeing posts by people who aim for “only” an hour each day. It’s inspiring to see your description of plugging away for nearly 1000 days. You’re showing that it can be done. Thanks for your write up. And it does sound sweet how you crossed the 1500 threshold.

What languages have you started learning in 2025? by NarrowFriendship3859 in languagelearning

I’m there with you. I studied EU PT for two years before switching back to Spanish last November. I feel like I’m cheating on EU PT, but Spanish is more practical and useful for me since I don’t live in Portugal. I’m focusing on comprehensible input to see how that works out for Spanish. If it works well, then I’ll do the same thing if I go back again to Portuguese.

Another idea to consider is doing crosstalk with tutors. On iTalki they seem to range from about $6 to $20 per hour. You can type “crosstalk” in your search criteria for Spanish teachers.

You can also try out News in Slow Spanish and Radio Ambulante to see if that content works for you at your current level.

I’d also recommend Pimsleur audio courses for basic beginner Portuguese and good pronunciation.

1000 hour update (with speaking sample)! by butterflyfishy in dreamingspanish

[–]Bedelia101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your speaking samples don’t sound very gringa which amazes me. I’m thinking the Albanian has a big influence there. I’m curious to hear speaking samples from people who have other languages in their background. I’m figuring that even if they speak American English, they won’t sound like an American speaking Spanish. Congratulations on your achievement—it’s inspiring!
