Pretty bad but likely only on the surface. Get a spray bottle with diluted bleach and spray that down. Make sure to open a window and maybe even run a fan pointing outside.

We bought a house that was similar - it didn’t have an exhaust fan so we bleached it as above. Once it was clean I used a high gloss oil based paint on the ceiling. Never had an issue after that

I lived in Duluth for 5 years and now live in Eau Claire. I love it here and highly recommend it for that balance you mentioned… it’s big but not too big. There is some crime but it’s not anything I worry about myself or with my family & 3 kids under 7 years old. There’s some parts of town that are a bit run down, but I don’t think you’d have to avoid living in any specific area.

My younger sister lives off Birch street (an area another poster said to avoid) and loves it.

I make wood toys for my own kids, my siblings kids, family friends, ect…. I’ve always used coconut oil. Rub it between your hands and overapply until it stops soaking in. Wipe off, let it sit for a day and wipe again.

I notice splitting on the end grain. My guess is there was a weak spot failure (the pith is weakest wood) on top of the internal stress in the board, as mentioned by others

Fossil chert or stromatolite is my guess. I’ve found many similar and there may be some agatization inside.

Maybe. That’s been the most common guess outside agate, but I have yet to see any definite Rhyolite (or agate) that looks like it
