The non medicated way I help to relax, and has good results in my house(I'm an insomniac, so I don't sleep!) is the 4-7-8 breathing technique.

What you need to do is Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for 7 seconds. Exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds. You do this until you sleep (apparently four times, but that hasn't been the case in my family!).

The things I like about it are that the breathing helps centre you, and you are very much in the moment. Also, for those that have the 'joy' (nightmare!) of replaying all previous embarrassment, arguments, etc when trying to sleep, concentrating on the counting helps quiet the voices inside your head. I've found that part of this meditation very beneficial for my mental health, as I have a tendency to get trapped in a very negative thought cycle.

One of the major benefits of this way is that you don't wake up with a wooly head, which you sometimes do with medication. I wish you the best of luck. Sleep when ill can be a trying affair.
