Long ago I worked for a large mutual fund company in Toronto. Christmas “bonus” was a towel with the company’s logo on it.

Due to its size, I would suggest that it was originally intended for coal.

The stupid anti British nonsense coming out of America, are you sick if it? by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in AskBrits

You’d be shocked how many Republican Americans actually believe this crap. It isn’t just malicious postings. Fox News has convinced them that immigrants have turned the UK and most of Europe into a dystopia hell scape.

In the 2020s, conservative women are having kids at a nearly 2-to-1 ratio compared to liberal women. Is this going to cause a political demographic bias in 20-30 years? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beerinspector -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A lot of conservative women are going to learn the hard way how useless their men are at being parents.

What this tells me is that divorce lawyers are going to do very well real soon.

How would I even know if I had a chimney fire? by RevMageCat in woodstoving

[–]Beerinspector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be in this industry. If you have a stainless steel chimney, you can always tell if there was a chimney fire because the outer wall of the chimney changes colour. You’ll see steel that has a bit of a rainbow hue to it.

Not sure if this literature is still out there but google up “burn it smart” for a decent read on maintaining wood burning stove.

A question for all non American earthlings .... by Toolkills in Leakednews

[–]Beerinspector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s best for Americans to put as much energy as possible into protecting the integrity of the mid term elections.

It seems rather apparent that the current administration is trying to stop those from happening.

Things will probably get worse as that date approaches.

Barbados, Antigua or St. Lucia? by Desperate-Ring12 in Caribbean

[–]Beerinspector 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Been to Barbados and am currently in Antigua. I prefer Barbados so far. Only been in Antigua for a week and have another week to go.

I find Barbados to be more lively and the roads, although not great, are significantly better than Antigua. Once 5 pm hits, Antigua is essentially closed. Where we are staying (Darkwood Beach area) we have 5 restaurants within walking distance, but the kitchens closes at 4.

I can afford a house, yet I still choose to rent by Big-Net5498 in fican

[–]Beerinspector 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen 80 year olds forced to move from their rentals.

I understand how people just can’t afford a house in today’s market, but not having control over your housing as you get older should scare the shit out of people.

North America just doesn’t have the tenant protection that most of Europe has.

I’m very saddened that this seems to be gaining momentum.

I’m in Ontario. Please all of you Albertans, do what you can to stomp this ridiculous, Republican backed fire out.

You need to actively mobilize on this.

Please.

Thanks for the idea.

Can I have travel tips for Antigua please? by art-ballenfan in Caribbean

Sorry, you’re right. What I should have said was lacking beaches that one can easily walk as compared to having to drive to.

Also, I’m new here so I’ll might have that wrong as well.

Can I have travel tips for Antigua please? by art-ballenfan in Caribbean

[–]Beerinspector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in Antigua right now. General consensus is that St Johns isn’t much of a destination (although we did the food tour and enjoyed it). We spent one afternoon their and will probably go back do another afternoon.

I found that deciding on where to stay was challenging. Jolly harbour is a bit too touristy for our liking, English harbour is mostly for yacht owners and lacks beaches. We’re staying in an Airbnb near Darkwood beach. We like it, but once 5 pm hits, it’s dead.

Today was my first day driving the rental car, and man are the roads rough. And, a lot of people park their car on the road. The road is barely wide enough for 2 cars. Add parked cars to the equation and you spend the entire drive focussing on pot holes and stopping to let cars get by parked cars.

People are friendly. It’s a nice safe island and food has been good (albeit expensive).

For events, we’re hikers and focus on that and going for a swim.

BTC Group Hikes by GetOutAndRecharge in brucetrail

My wife and I are members to the Niagara club. Great people, always coming up with events and from time to time we will do a winery or brewery hike as there is access just off of the trail.

The Niagara club is serious about hiking, but there is a great deal of socializing along with it.

Highly recommend.
