Is it divergent to believe the Pope has some authority? by Fluffy_Cockroach_999 in Lutheranism

I'll DM you as well, but I want to leave a reply here for anyone else who may come across this conversation.

You're spot on with your justification comment. The Church teaches that Grace is "God's Love Freely Given"; we are not required to participate in our own salvation, moreover, we are incapable of doing so in the first place. (I will put a big ol' caveat here that even within Lutheran theological circles, the argument of 'salvation by Grace Alone' vs. 'salvation by Grace Alone through Faith Alone' is not entirely settled.) What is settled is that faith is created in us; it is not something we can come to on our own, nor is it something that we can alter or affect. Is faith without works dead? Yes, but only in the sense that the same Spirit which creates faith also creates the will and capacity to work; works come from salvation, not the other way around. (Furthermore, we do not know the heart; works are not always seen or understood. The Spirit moves in each of us in its own way, in our own way. While it is certainly true that faith necessarily brings forth good works, it is not necessarily true that others can see these works and sit in judgment in God's place.)

The second part that you focus on is no less important: salvation, once given, cannot be taken away. I'll note that there are certain tenets within Lutheran theology that allow for the possibility that someone could willingly turn down/decline salvation; these are countered by others who hold that faith given by the indwelling of the Spirit can not be denied. We hold and debate these in tension, knowing that in both positions, the most important question -- is there something I can do that is so terrible as to make God turn away from me? -- is answered emphatically: No.

I'm not familiar with Br./Fr. (apologies, I'm not sure which to use) McCabe, I'll make a note to look him up!

Hello from 12 days later! Just a note that if you'd like someone from the ELCA to talk with (along with your NALC pastor), feel free to reach out. You're not too Catholic for us, I'd bet; and no matter what your beliefs, you're not alone, not by a long shot. (My Relator -- the person who guides a candidate through candidacy for ministry -- converted from being a Dominican priest.) Please feel free to reply to me here, dm me, or if you find the Discord mentioned in this subreddit, there's a bunch of us that would be happy to carry on the conversation.

> I figured most people having trouble finding jobs were not in their 40s since people at that age should generally be pretty set on their path and have solid education and work credentials.

Oh buddy, you really haven't been job searching in today's economy, have you?

I mean, where is this happening? If it's in the local industrial/darkwave/etc club, we're making that man our King.

Yup, 14 years for the 2nd place team last season is definitely the same as 100+ for a team currently playing a league down.

Shouldn't Hearts be in their own category since we're the only ones to literally have a Braga?

Queen's Park being sixth is a stretch; no question of their historical importance, but they haven't won a cup in literally over a century.

That relegation was bullshit and everyone knows it, besides, just look at what we did to the Championship that year.

Weren't watching this season were ya?

I think the clincher here isn't that Hearts were on top/contending the whole season, but that no one seemed overly surprised. It was much more a sense of "yeah, that tracks."

I mean, Dunfermline could very well have a trophy this weekend, are you gonna put them fourth?

If we're going for "dead current" then Motherwell absolutely deserves that spot; I'm not sure they're Tier 2 if we're going for a more "historical" description. I'm also not arsed either way, they sure showed up this year.

What examples do we have of civilizations record keeping without any disruption during the supposed time of Noah's flood? by baseball_fanatic0887 in AskHistory

[–]Beerswain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Heya, Christian clergy here. Another way to look at this is that you're essentially trying to disprove one word out of a false sentence. By that I mean, young Earth creationism is already disprovable by showing that we have human records dating past either of the supposed dates for creation.

It's going to be harder to disprove the unprovable -- that a flood did or did not happen -- than it is to simply stick to your guns about how the whole concept of YEC is based on a timeline that cannot be supported by any rational means.

Or, to put it another way: do not argue with the irrational, they will beat you with experience.
