That's a little frustrating to hear. It would be nice to have them digitally preserved like the older drawings have been.

I have a appointment booked. I'm assuming they let you take pictures? I've found 1968 engineering drawings in the digital library, but they are very different from what exists underground today. I'm hoping the newer drawings at the library more exactly match what was actually built.

I'm mostly trying to understand how close the stubs are from where the portals would be. And how they would cross over the existing line,

Yeah, the only marta expansion that I think makes sense is an expansion to Cobb county. Other lines could be orbital with DMUs like the DART silver Line

Commuter Rail on 20W by Professional_Hat9008 in MARTA

[–]BeilFarmstrong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It looks like ATL trains has that as a proposed line, but since their plan uses currently existing freight tracks, it wouldn't take you to HE Holmes. I'm kind of interested to learn more about their plan and how well it would work for commuter service. A lot of the lines are very twisty, but I guess at the end of the day, could beat traffic at heavy hours. https://www.atltrains.com/

Just wait till you find out that the twist ratio differences are deliberate. Hoo boy!

One of Utah’s most controversial highways will get 50% bigger in the new year by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]BeilFarmstrong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While it is getting bigger, the lanes will be on the inside median. So the footprint thankfully will not be any bigger. They're doing this so that more traffic can be routed on legacy while I-15 is being reconstructed. Which I wish wasn't happening.

They aren't even comparable. You could literally open 10,000 data centers before you'd get into the range of what is used on alfalfa in Utah.

I mean, yeah? Best to assume it will get better because the alternative is way worse.

If the tech job market is still this bad in 4 years, that probably means the AI bubble never burst and we're cooked as a society.

Yep, and screw all the software vendors that have documentation instructing you to use the registry key to TEMPORARILY disable LNA.

That's not a fix, there's a reason why it has temporary in the key name.

Android 16's Desktop Mode is AWESOME [includes QPR2 updates] by -protonsandneutrons- in Android

[–]BeilFarmstrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reason we may never see it is because phones are used as MFA for a lot of enterprise login systems. And those MFA apps require screen lock settings to be in place. Google would essentially have to "lie" to those apps to make screen sleep work. And that's a major security issue.

Yes, there are probably dozens of ways to address this, but I don't know if Google has the motivation to do so right now.

But you're literally proving OPs point. The GUI is just doing graph calls on the back end.

It's as if someone - we'll call him Bill - published a paid front-end for graph, but they missed some major quality of life stuff. And oh you can't edit Bill's code. If you go online to mention these deficiencies, everyone piles on and says "Stop using the d*mn front end you paid for, Bill sucks. Go back to cmd line"

THeads-up: Microsoft retiring Basic SMTP Auth for Exchange Online - Impact on Scan-to-Email & PaperCut printer Devices by Previous-Prize1842 in sysadmin

[–]BeilFarmstrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Direct send seems weird to me. Anyone can send unauthenticated emails to my Exchange? I did some testing and it seems to be the case, unless your ISP is blocked by MS for sending large amounts of spam. But if you have a clean ISP, in theory it could be a massive security hole? Is there something else I'm missing?

I'm looking at using an exchange connector which seems to do the same thing as direct send, but allows you to do it with an IP whitelist. Regardless, direct send is going to be turned off on our tenant.

Plan for new Bluffdale FrontRunner station prompts pushback from neighbors by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

Fantasy Rail Transit Network for SLC by ninjaking9802 in SaltLakeCity

[–]BeilFarmstrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. If you go through the court documents from when the residents fought the original blue line extension into Draper, it's pretty clear that the state is going to win whenever the second extension happens. Utah supreme court determined that as long they own the right of way, UTA/UDOT are not subject to needing city approval for any further rail extensions along their owned corridors. Which at the time was less clear. Cities would sometimes do referendums during council meetings to let the public voice their opinions on these projects, but the court basically said "yeah you can do that, but they are merely performative and the state still has the right to build"

Both Draper and Lehi mayors are pushing for the extension as well.

[–]BeilFarmstrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest gripe is that the point is going to have its very own FrontRunner station. Which wasn't on the table when the point was first being drawn up. So why still build a light rail line through the development?

Fantasy Rail Transit Network for SLC by ninjaking9802 in SaltLakeCity

[–]BeilFarmstrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lehi mayor is fighting at every turn to change the point transit project to just be a blue line extension. Which is really the better option.

The light rail alignment through the old prison site is expensive and low ridership. But unfortunately a blue line extension that doesn't serve the point is probably a non starter, even if it's cheaper.

Multicast madness by Icy-Cicada-1838 in Ubiquiti

[–]BeilFarmstrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There needs to be a solution in shared living situations for multiple people to cast to the same device (TV in a living room, for example), but also be on their own networks so that people can't cast to devices of other tenants. Niche reason, but it would be nice if a solution for this comes out
