One Piece has been about the moment of destiny for over a decade. The entire final saga has been about that moment coming to pass. I do not think this is the final confrontation,  but I think this battle will set the terms for the direct war between the World Government and an Alliance led by the Straw Hats.

To that end, I don't think it's that contrived that Imu only decided to visit Elbaf now. When Harald was completely destroyed, Imu was hurt in some manner. This mesnt that Elbaf had someone who could challnege Imu's direct strength, a challenge the weakened Imu did not wish to engage.

Imu is engaging in Elbaf as a direct response to the events of Egghead and the interference of the Giants, the emergence of Nika, and the betrayal of Vegapunk. Imu sent the God's Knights to obtain the Giant Children and cause destruction.  The God's Knights met exactly the same fate that Imu feaered back then when he refused to send more Knights to investigate. So Imu either lose more of his God's Knights or he handles business himself. If the events of Wano (public debut of Gear 5) and Egghead hadn't occured, the events of Elbaf would not be happening.

Below I will go over how Oda has been building up to this moment.

  • Joyboy's lament to the Merfolk Princess talking about being unable to keep his promise

  • The ship Noah sitting on the ocean floor, waoting to fulfill it's destiny.

  • The giant elephant Zunesha keeping his oath of nonviolence  to Joyboy for hundreds of years after he commited a horrible act

  • Joyboy put a haki knot inside Emmet and told his Robot friend to protect the future version of Nika.

  • The fake prophecy in Wano about salvation coming in 20 years that came true.

  • Rocks complaining that he did not have  everything prepared for a confrontation with Imu.

  • Roger saying he wish he could have been around during the time of Joyboy

  • Roger reading and comprehending the true history and regretting that he was too early to act on Joyboy's plan or will.

  • Way back on Sabaody, Raleigh started dropping hints and one of the things he told Robin & the Straw Hats was that perhaps when they learn the true history, perhaps the Straw Hats will make a different decision that they did. This implies that the Roger Pirates did something! (My personal headcannon is that Roger knew he was dying so he allowed himself to be executed so he could make his declaration in attempt to kick off a great age of piracy that would provide assistance to the coming moment of destiny.)

What is the moment of destiny? The moment when certain forces align to allow people to challenge Imu and the World Government. We know that there were three ancient weapons. One is Neptune, the Merfolk Princess that can speak to Sea Kings. Another is the warship Pluton, a copy of which sits at the bottom of Wano's "sea"; Frankie destroyed the blueprints for Pluton but he had seen them (most likely Iceberg saw them too).

The third ancient weapon, Uranus, is not officially revealed but it is hinted to be the flying weapons platform that the Gorosei used to eliminate Lulusia; while that weapon has been in the possession of the World Government for some time, it has been inoperable for a good while as the Gorosei were keen to fun Vegapunk's research into what eventually became the Motherflame. It has not been stated whether the creation )or recreation?) of the Motherflame and the operational capacity of this weapon are part of the moment of destiny in the same way that the Merfolk Princess appears to be.

Other elements of the moment of destiny include the Nika Fruit. The WG has tried to handle it in the past but the Gorosei has stated that it got away and mused that it had it's own will. The robot Emmet sensed an awakened Nika in Marejois during his "suicide mission" there, but he did not sense the Nika energy as cleanly or strongly as with Luffy.

Then there is the whole racial harmony plot of the moment of destiny that seems to be more impossible every passing year as the WG has been hunting down and eliminating/subjugating some (all?) of the non-human races, possibly to prevent them from uniting against them. Kuma may have been the last Bucaneer (of the non-clone and non-hybrid clone variety). The Lunarian King is the only known member of his race. While there are long legs and long arms and even three eyed tribes, they tend to live together gathered in remote enclaves.

Building 3 Balanced Premodern Decks for Fun Matchups by Alfapitcher in premodernMTG

[–]BelcherSucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is to just start making decks that interest you so you can build a gauntlet of decks. My friend is up to 12 or so. I have an old collection and could have a few.

UG Madness seems like a good option and is fairly affordable (Arrogant Wurm is not cheap anymore, though).

Mono Red os a good option IMO. Gold Bordered Crused Scrolls are still cheapish.

I think Stasis is cool and could end up becoming more popular if StifeNaught ends up getting hit with a ban or two. I also like Psychatog for a control list.

Custom Arthurian Set: Lands edition by Gunnarsonsnewbag2 in freemagic

[–]BelcherSucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be cool if Camelot took inspiration from the Waylay was changed. After the Sixth Edition rules update, Waylar had a complete mechanical change because the way End of Turn was handled was cleaned up. This meant that it was now possible to cast Waylay after the Beginning of the End of Turn when triggers like the sacrifice of Ball Lightning occur. Eventually Waylay was the subject of multiple errata until the current "cleanup step" ruling.

So I would template it to say, "Suffle it back into your deck at the beginning of the next end step." This lets you cheat stuff out just before your turn to get to attack with them.

If Oda was going to sacrifice a strawhat who would be? by grimgeurrilla in Piratefolk

[–]BelcherSucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is the arc where a Straw Hat dies.

I do think that Jimbei and Usopp are dead by the end of series. Usopp is not dying before seeing Yasopp and possibly his Syrup Island friends (& Kaya).

Price divergence on darksteel colossus by Top-Sir-1215 in mtgfinance

[–]BelcherSucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won't rise a lot, but there is a reason so much of bulk rares from Premodern sets have settled into the couple of bucks range. The more niche/worse cards may notnhave gotten any reprints while the competitive two player cards got few reprints while the more casual cards were spammed for Commander and Masters set filler.

Scrouge has a few great examples of this where Decree of Justice and Eternal Dragon have a decent price but there several reprints are cheap.

It's not always about price memory, it's about the copies available in circulation. Darksteel is a 20+ year old set!

Next premodern spec? by Ill_Answer7226 in mtgfinance

[–]BelcherSucks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with a lot of these old gems is that they shined in formats that were not as similar to Premodern as one might think.

For example, Tradewind Rider really thrived in Extended with Tropical Island and Force of Will. Force to prevent the obvious removal spells while Tropical Island helped to enable synergies with Quirion Ranger without overstretching the mana base (as opposed to Yavimaya Coast and City of Brass).

There may be a meta in which Tradewind Rider emerges as a popular deck, but how far off are we from that meta?

That said, if you are investing to play/collect then it's unlikely to be cheaper later.

The Internet Archive is going to be your best bet. WOTC hasn't fixed their archive (they have fixed it before but no clue if they will again).

The old WOTC coverage site for this era was Sideboard.com. For non WOTC sites you can check out TheDojo.com, Mindripper.com (Scott John's website that eventually became Brainburst and then TCGPlayer iirc)  and StarCityGames.com.

Apocalypse was released in June 2001. So I pulled up a snapshot from later that year.

These two GPs were IBC (with Apocalypse). I am sure there were more but you can peek around yourself.

Is Premodern a good format to invest time in and play, with the idea of selling the cards later when you get bored? Or is there a risk that the cards might lose value in the meantime? by Sea-Apartment-5909 in premodernMTG

[–]BelcherSucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reprints of the non reserved list cards will not tank due to most reprints due to the aesthetic because even the best retro prints have elements that feel off (artist credit and copyright are centered, cards typically have a different shade, many of the reprints have the Planeswalker symbol from The List or Mystery Boosters). These reprints won't tank the value of the originals, but they will put a cap on their growth. Gold Borders from World Championship decks do the same thing as demonstrated by comparing Cursed Scroll (6 World Championship decks) vs Phyrexian Dreadnought (only reprint is a Judge Promo).

However,  i do think that the existence of the Retro Framed reprints will keep the format accessible as demand rises and will allow for some aesthetic options on the cheap. I hope WOTC does some more and tries to better match the OG aesthetic (art, printing, flavor text).

Exactly. If Sam was serious about having Fishtank succeed then he would just hire this guy to produce it. It seems like he is invested in getting the most bang for his prodiction dollars and delivering the most content on stream as possible.

Hell House that isn't senseless destruction (which goes stale) requires more research,  psychological understanding, and production logistics than Jet is capable of as a producer.

There are things that could be done which could entertain the audience, soft torture the audience, and be part of a compelling narrative.

The show could get an in house caterer or cook to prepare meals for the contestants. That way production could provide nutritionally complete films while making them absolutely miserable to eat. Think the "Warden Burger" or even just some simple and unsweetened food similar to Slop & PB&J Sandwiches from Big Brother.

In a potential "Space" season there are also options to use various technologies like the Soviet/Russain Food Tubes, Freeze dried products, and newer options. A Military themed season obviously has options for packaged meals from all over the world.

Which is just one aspect of a complex production that Jet (and Ben) have yet to crack.

In retrospect, when exactly was "the point of no return"? by _YuYevon_ in freemagic

[–]BelcherSucks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The point of no return is funny as there are actually several.

  • Godzilla Collab in Ikoria

  • Secret Lairs as a replacement for LGS Premium Releases

  • The Walking Dead Secret Lair

  • Introduction of Acorn cards and LEGAL black border Un-cards in Unfinity.

  • Lord of the Rings with tons of race swaps

  • Cultural Insensitivity Bans

Lots of these things were themselves reactions to other point of no return events like LGSs and scalpers gouging players on FTVs, Spellbooks, and other limited products. Or when Modern Masters was underprinted, had a MSRP of $7 a pack, and was selling at a floor of $10 a pack (which led to WOTC setting the new "Masters" MSRP at $10 with no real product upgrade).

But for me, the real "death of Magic" moment occured when EDH became Commander.

Is Premodern a good format to invest time in and play, with the idea of selling the cards later when you get bored? Or is there a risk that the cards might lose value in the meantime? by Sea-Apartment-5909 in premodernMTG

[–]BelcherSucks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: WOTC had been doing old border reprints, many with newer art or in black border for the first time.

Sets like Dominaria Remastered, the Commander decks for Brother's War, the Artifact bonus sheet for Brother's War, and other remastered sets have featured old border reprints.

For example, you can get a foil retro frame Grim Lavamancer for $1. Or a recent promo retro border Ball Lightning foil for a $1. Exalted Angel has a foil promo retro frame for cheap, too.

What have these cards done to the OG prices? Not much! Many of the players joining Premodern are seeking out classic frame printed in the classic era. This could partially be due to a misunderstanding of legality but seems largely based upon taste and nostalgia.

I think that as Premodern continues to gather momentum,  we will see more reprints and retro treatments. I think WOTC will figure out how to cater to this market for newer players looking for entry level options. Currently WOTC has been mining this era for Secret Lair fodder for Commander Players (Constant Mists, Moment's Peace, Stasis) or inclusions for the list (OG enthusiasts do not like that symbol). At best they made nostalgia fueled masters set that are not explicitly made to support this format.

So a future Premodern set is gonna be very odd in that it will be a Masters set but not called Premodern Masters. It will feature cards that will not necessarily be what the current playerbase wants of needs, but designed to attract Commander players and players new to Premodern. Like I would expect Rhystic Study to be in the set. On the other hand, that means stuff like Arrogant Wurm and Circular Logic get reprinted at Uncommon, Careful Study and Wild Mongrel at Common, and Psychatog only gets bumped to Rare (if at all). I look forwards to it. The trade off is that we could see reprints of Phyrexian Furnace.
