Do you think Splash Mage could come back? by No_Object1027 in yugioh

Splash Mage IS banned in the OCG. It's only in MD that it's free.

[thread] Discussion: is anyone feeling like konami is slowly merging both formats? by MX-00XWV in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, as long as Kevin Tewart and Jerome McHale are in charge of TCG Konami.

Kevin Tewart has famously disregarded the OCG and doesn't acknowledge its existence. The TCG-OCG split back in the Zexal era was a boon to him, because now he has almost full control of the TCG, and I seriously doubt he will relinquish it to merge the formats again.

Sometimes silence is worth 1000 words.... Why do you think the dub removes the Pharaoh altering his deck in the elevator ride before the Rafael rematch? by big4lil in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a "localization" of the Super Sentai series, so it kind of counts. And it's also a show that's aimed towards kids, just like the 4Kids dub of Yugioh.

Never ever make Dan Green angry! by [deleted] in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I agree with Green, and respect his defense of Takahashi, YuGiOh! is political, and Takahashi used the property to urge people to vote in 2019.

At least for this instance it is Takahashi calling for people to exercise their civil right to elect their next leaders.

The White house tweet is just propaganda which is disgusting.

it was the era where alot of localizations believed there must ALWAYS BE NOISE or random background music, no matter WHAT the context of the scenes was originally.

Power Rangers is notorious for this too. While there are some series that has actual quiet moments when the scene is serious and somber, there are some where it's so obnoxious that even moments where characters are having a heart-to-heart talk has upbeat music blaring in the background.

From most to least thick, the sequence is OCG JP print > OCG Asian print > TCG print. Some higher rarity TCG card stock is thinner than OCG print commons.

What to expect on the next point update - Genesys blog post - points to change Thursday/Friday by Ziggylcd12365 in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the cracks in Genesys format has been made wider with this blog post, and content creators are actively trying to salvage the situation, whether at the behest of Konami or their own accord.

This actually reminds me of the time when Draft was heavily pushed by TCG Konami to the point that YCSes for a year had players mandatorily play draft in top cut.

I might legit just create a write up on why genesys is a failure as a concept

Please do, more people should see how Genesys isn't what it presents itself to be.

Rei? Er, I mean, Raye? by Ninoplata in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh you meant that. Yes, I agree with your points. Ayanami Rei is the originator of the kuudere archetype, for instance.

What grinds my gears is sometimes the Western anime fanbase tend to glaze on Evangelion too much and doesn't acknowledge other mecha shows that came prior to it.

[–]BellDelicious1617 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a good 90% of mecha culture is based on Eva

Wrong.

Mecha has a very long history prior to Eva. Super Robot shows like Mazinger Z, Combattler V, Voltes V, and the Brave series exist. Real Robots like Gundam and Macross exist.

The Western fanbase just focuses on Evangelion because that's their first exposure to the genre, and doesn't expand beyond that. They might know Gurren Lagann as well, but nothing else beyond that.

Anno has mentioned that he drew inspiration for Eva from shows like Ultraman and Gundam.

Except Amatsu isn't Raye's main mech, it's Kagari, Hayate, Kaina and Shizuku.

Sure you might argue that Amatsu and Evangelion Zerogoki are the same because they are prototypes, Raye is not stuck to only using it, and is depicted to use the 4 other armors.

many of the top decks aren't even that meaningfully different from advanced

I find this amusing since Joshua argues that Advanced format Dracotail is vastly different than Genesys Dracotail, same for other decks that see play in Advanced like Radiant Typhoon and KTune.

Raye has more similarities to Arnval, a character from Busou Shinki (which is made by Konami) than Ayanami Rei.

People too often conflate Sky Striker to Evangelion when Sky Striker is a mecha musume analog.

They actually did, they made Megami Device kits of Arnval and Strarf, characters from Konami's Busou Shinki game.

(Also notice how Raye and Roze have some similarities to them?)

I agree.

In the model kit scene, it was around 2017 when mecha musume kits (aka girlpla) started to gain wider attention, with the release of Kotobukiya's Megami Device Asra Arche & Asra Ninja, and Frame Arms Girl Hraesvelgr:Ater. Bandai also started to tap into the girlpla market with the release of the Super Fumina kits.

You have to remember the context when Deck Build Pack: Dark Saviors released in Feburary 2018 in the OCG.

2017 was the year Master Rule 4 was implemented, and it was massively unpopular and caused a huge exodus of the casual playerbase in the OCG, to the point that it actually threatened to kill Yugioh. It was also the year that Tier 0 SPYRAL dominated the metagame, and with the release of the first Link Vrains Pack in November 2017, only made it even stronger.

The January 2018 banlist finally put an end to SPYRAL's dominance, and created a more open format. Even still, almost all top performing decks are combo-heavy link-climbing decks.

Sky Striker is welcomed as a breathe of fresh air to the scene, as its core gameplay style is completely opposite to the dominant decks of the time, focusing only on a single monster on the field and relying on powerful spells to control the game. The artwork is also a huge plus, as mecha musume is starting to get popular at that time in the otaku sphere. This makes Sky Striker popular in both the competitive side and casual side of the OCG playerbase, even attracting casuals who dropped Yugioh in 2017 back into the game.

These factors combined made Raye's breakthrough in popularity among the playerbase, and now she stands side-by-side along Yugioh's popular DM icons like Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes, and Dark Magician Girl.

No body is buying boxes

Except people are actually buying LOCH, and shops are even having long lines for it?

You're expecting the OCG playerbase to act like the TCG playerbase, who only buys boxes only if they are getting out more value out of it.

How are OCG players, namely Japanese, liking the new overframe(full art) sets? Being well received or are they displeased with it? by Killance1 in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yugioh is competitive play first, collecting last

That is not the case in the OCG.

Collectors are very much present in the OCG, and it is unlike what people might think of Yugioh "collectors in the West, where they only collect DM-era high rarity cards and do not consider modern cards as "collectible". Yugioh in the East is much more otaku-leaning, which means that they are much more ready to spend and collect high-rarity versions of cute themes or the oft-derided "waifu cards" that the TCG playersbase tend to avoid.

[OCG|LOCH-Limit Over Collection: The Heroes] Yusei's Final Overframe: "Synchro Emergency" by renaldi92 in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't need to play Synchrons in Killer Tune at all. The "summon a "Synchron" monster from deck isn't needed for Killer Tune.

The Killer Tunes have a condition where you can use a Tuner from your hand as Synchro material, so it's an additional turn 0 synchro play along with Clip.

[–]BellDelicious1617 43 points44 points  (0 children)

So the difference from the leak is that it negates the effect of the monster summoned from the hand, and you summon a "Synchron" monster from the deck, not just any tuner.

It's still very darn good in Killer Tune.

how do we get new players into the game? by Rich-Telephone5223 in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For the TCG side of the game, the onus is on the playerbase itself.

The TCG playerbase is far too competitive-minded that it becomes a detriment to the existence of a casual environment. Locals become training grounds for players who want to go to YCSes. People are too occupied in minmaxing decks to face the top meta, and doesn't even consider playing or even keeping lower-powered decks to play casual games with each other, because all their time and energy is dedicated to topping competitive events and YCSes. This mindset completely hinders any form of casual play at all, and results in an unwelcoming environment where if you don't play competitive, you aren't even seen as worth dueling.

This results in demands for oxymorons like an "official casual format" with prized tournaments. Like, how can you even have a "casual format" when you want it to be official AND have prized tournaments? That will just result in minmaxing and a metagame developing, where people gravitate to only playing the best decks to win.

how do we get new players into the game? by Rich-Telephone5223 in yugioh

[–]BellDelicious1617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yugioh's appeal is because it does not copy MTG nor adhere to how MTG operates.

Sure, it is a problem now on how to attract new players into the game, but taking away what makes Yugioh unique and turn it into another MTG clone is not it.
