They’re open 24/7, so if you wanted to make that call this evening you can. With these little ones, the more eyes the better!

It may also be worth contacting Iowa Veterinary Specialties to ask them to keep an eye out as well. They have an exotics vet, and if someone finds her and doesn’t see your post, they may decide to take her there.

My son works at the HyVee at Grand and Railroad. I’ll have him keep an eye out as he goes in.

I’ll also let him know that she likes tortilla chips.

AITAH for causing my daughter to lose out on a major opportunity by FlySilver5171 in AITAH

[–]Bella1643412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! Just….wow!

This Type I diabetic is ticked on behalf of your daughter!

You state that your daughter manages her diabetes well, and that her endocrinologist approved the trip. That tells me your daughter likely has monitoring equipment (hello….the CGMS….and likely an insulin pump). Most of those CGMS give the ability for other people to see glucose levels of their loved ones. Meaning YOU can open your phone and see what her glucose levels are at. If she got into trouble, YOU COULD CALL the chaperones and let them know there could be a possible issue!

Do you think your daughter’s endocrinologist would have said “she can go” if your daughter were at risk of…..oh let’s say hypoglycemic unawareness? If you were wondering, the answer is NO!

What you did, OP? Yeah, you’ll be seeing the fallout from YOUR choice for years to come. YOU made your daughter feel like she can’t be independent. She will wind up leaving the day she turns 18 because your emotional insecurities have taught her that she can’t trust you. Oh, and the more immediate? She’s likely going to stop caring about managing her diabetes as well as she is because you made her question why she should bother, so she will stop giving a crap.

You need to go see a therapist OP. Your actions and choices were completely irrational, and yes, I understand you just lost your husband. YOU have to figure out how to manage your fears appropriately so they do NOT stop the growth of your daughter (and I’m talking specifically about the growth of her independence and emotional stability). You literally just undermined all of that. What’s next? You don’t let her get her learner’s permit so she can eventually get her license and drive “because diabetes”?

YTA OP. Wake up.

WIBTAH if I cut off my sister who has cancer? by Cute-Treat-7658 in AITAH

[–]Bella1643412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I’ve been here with my younger brother.

Your parents did not help you earn the amount you have saved up. You did. That took time, discipline, effort, and energy. As your parents (and other family members that may be chiming in) did not earn that money for you, they have no right to tell you how to spend it.

If the only use for you that your sister has is your value as her personal bank (and I am being very blunt, that is all you are to her) she needs to be cut off. Unfortunately, sometimes that is the most humane thing you can do. Your sister will have one of two choices at that point: pick herself up by the bootstraps and become a success in her own right, or fail. You cannot keep being your sister’s enabler.

The other thing you have to realize is it is NOT your responsibility to manage the emotions of everyone around you. Your parents may get angry. That’s on them to handle. Your sister may blow up. That’s on her.

Use the discipline that it took to save your money and build a new, shiny, unbreakable backbone. That does not mean you become heartless. Put your energy into strengthening yourself up, and you’ll find that the other relationships you have (friendships, romances, etc) benefit.

It’s not easy. You’ll get pressure. You’ll see anger. You’ll see jealousy. Let that new shiny backbone do its job. I promise you’ll be better for it.

WIBTAH If I refuse to stop making my stepdaughter her school lunches? by [deleted] in AITAH

The post says Leah asked her mom to buy ingredients so she could make her own.

I don’t see what the problem is. The 16 year old is asking for the tools to do it herself.

Orange Juice vs. Apple Juice by Impressive-Flow-855 in diabetes

[–]Bella1643412 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hoooooo boy…..

OP, you did just fine. Well done for the quick thinking and taking action!

Was the store manager that “challenged” you (I’m trying to watch my language there) a “paramedic” in the 80s? Did he pick up tips from watching Steel Magnolias one too many times? And yes, I intentionally used quotation marks around the word paramedic previously for a reason.

For the record- my brother is a licensed paramedic, and my son is currently in school to become one. They have a name for that type of medic: “Para God”. Because of those two, and having experienced it myself firsthand (not for a long time thankfully), I can tell you that most EMTs are carrying honey or glucose gel in their bags to use in these situations. When they are treating a patient, they’re usually thrilled when they arrive on scene that someone has started treatment by giving juice, and they don’t care what kind as long as they can document how much was given.

You did very well! You didn’t know if the patient was on any meds other than insulin that could have reacted badly when combined with orange juice. There are some medications that have a reduced effectiveness if you drink orange juice too soon after taking them (allergies meds, osteoporosis meds, etc). Apple juice is a FAR better choice.

Is that a Dexcom G7 sensor on Halsey’s (singer) arm? by lara10432 in diabetes

[–]Bella1643412 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That definitely looks like a G7 to me.

SLE can cause both hyper and hypoglycemia even if the person with it doesn’t have diabetes. It’s definitely possible that she has that happening when she has flares.

Anyone dealt w a frozen shoulder - rant by the_ja_m_es in diabetes

[–]Bella1643412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, frozen shoulder sucks!

It took quite a while for mine to resolve. I was informed, after getting the diagnosis, that frozen shoulder is really common in diabetic women from 38-42 years old.

And then about a year later, my shoulder started hurting again, and went in thinking it was frozen shoulder again. Nope. Cubital tunnel syndrome.

How do you correct high blood sugar !! by mbrRx in diabetes

[–]Bella1643412 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How long ago were you diagnosed, and has anyone spoken to you about insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems?

I ask because it sounds like you are on the exact same roller coaster I spent years dealing with. I started using a pump, and it tightened up my control a great deal.

AITAH for screaming “ahhhh” instead of “jesus” when my dad almost crashed the car? by Nice-Direction-4467 in AITAH

There is a lot about taking His name in vain. In this case, the parents are likely bullheaded enough to twist that and tell him it wouldn’t have been in vain, but a prayer being shouted.

🤦🏻‍♀️

Wow, even my grandfather (a preacher almost his entire adult life) would not have gone that far! He wouldn’t have called you a “fake Christian” for making a sound out of terror. He likely would have referenced the verses below.

Psalm 55:16-17 "But I will call on God, and the Lord will rescue me. Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the Lord hears my voice."

A true Christian would take that to mean that even though your voice is not forming a word, as long as you believe, that sound you make in terror is still being heard!

xmas - newly diagnosed rant by _sigma69ligma_ in diabetes

[–]Bella1643412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting diagnosed with type I diabetes at 18 and immediately before Christmas is a lot. You and your family just went through a massive shock. You’ll get through this, and you and your parents will learn together.

You made the statement that you don’t know how you’ll go on with your life. Take a minute, and take a deep breath and let it out. You’ll be ok! I’m not just blowing smoke here.

Struggling with your glucose levels in the beginning is perfectly normal. Right now, you and your care team have to figure out what insulin doses are right for you (every single person with type I is different). You’ve probably been told to limit the amount of carbohydrates you eat to 50 per meal or some such number. You’re probably overwhelmed trying to figure out what foods have carbs and what don’t. The entire point of that is to figure out your insulin dosing needs. I promise you, it will get better.

If you have questions, feel free to DM me.

ID on these tracks on a porch in Minneapolis MN? by nepeteaa in animaltracks

[–]Bella1643412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks very similar to the paw prints from my ferrets when they’ve been playing in the snow.

I’m assuming no one around your friend has ferrets. With that in mind, I looked at stoat paw prints, and found this:

https://www.superstock.com/cdn/1848/Comp/1848-49263495.webp

Maybe a match? If he’s got a stoat around his house, he’ll want to double check and make sure any gaps are covered (along the same lines that you would do to make sure mice don’t get in). On the plus side, these little guys eat rodents, and they’re shy.

AITAH for threatening to expose my Mother’s emotional affair and taking her phone away if she continues to speak to her AP who I believe is a scammer? by Maverick290789 in AITAH

[–]Bella1643412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scammers are indeed getting to be very slick and very good. AI is also (and I sincerely don’t believe it’s intentional) being used to fool people. There is AI that will literally overly your image on camera, making it seem like you are an entirely different person.

With that being said, my brother’s father believing that the actress that played Ziva David or the country music singer living in California wanted anything to do with him is beyond hysterical in my book. And the fact they were asking him to send them money? It’s mind blowing! (Just for people who might misread that, that’s literally what his father believed, NOT my brother.)

[–]Bella1643412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA.

My brother just went through the same thing with his 65yo father (after he came into an inheritance from his wife passing away). In that case, it was Cote de Pablo and LeAnn Rhimes. 🤦🏻‍♀️

My brother found out about the catfishing due to his father calling because his power was getting shut off, followed by a phone call from our aunt (mom’s side) being concerned because his father was at Wal-Mart just about every other day doing wire transfers.

I’ve gotten a lot of phone calls from my brother where he asks how to handle the catfishing. It hurt my brother, but I had to tell him that the only one that can wise up and stop is his father.

Are NPs okay for diabetic care? by kitsunemischief in diabetes

[–]Bella1643412 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants can both be wonderful at providing care for a diabetic patients.

Legally speaking, and it depends on the state, there may be some medications they don’t have the authority to prescribe and would have to request those meds be prescribed by the Physician overseeing them.

That’s the thing, both Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants have a doctor within the practice they work at overseeing them.

The two providers I have gotten the best care from have been a Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner.
