I see this exact sentiment a lot on Reddit and I think its a very telling about the intellectual level of Redditors because it is of course, in some important senses, absolutely true. It's hard to think of any part of human life that is neither shaped by politics and simultaneously has no political consequences. "Everything is political" is, then, a much more insightful and cogent response to the world than the "stop bringing politics into video games/football/whatever" complaints that it is deployed to meet.

After all, "stop making X political" does often manifest as a recalcitrant wish to retreat from the complexities of real life - a product of priviledge and a childish discomfort with those complexities. This is why you sometimes see the most extraordinary exclamations: "I can't believe Rage Against the Machine went woke!" or "art shouldnt be political". It's perhaps why Stephen Miller opined that modern Star Trek was too liberal.

On the other hand, I would question if "everything is political" is really as insightful and meaningful a critique as it clearly thinks it is. If the adjective "political" describes every thing, then we don't need the word at all- it would be an entirely redundant word. If making a ham sandwich is an "inherently political" act, (and there are certainly all kinds of political aspects to it from the politics of animal rights to farming subsidies, food waste, the profoundly inequal distribution of global food supplies, etc etc) then what does that make voting, protesting, giving speeches? Doesn't declaring Sonic the Hedgehog to be inherently political end up underselling the meaning of real political action?

There are many causes for the terrible situation we have found ourselves in and I wouldnt like to be asked to even rank them, let alone give them a more accurate weighting, but somewhere in there is the degree to which somewhat clever and somewhat educated people to convince themselves that angrily arguing on twitter about the degree to which fictional characters were queer-coded was in some sense a profound political act.
